Family hotel”
I chose Hotel Bencoolen because it was one of the cheapest in Bencoolen road. I love the area and I thought to give the hotel a try - It was just a nights stay and I thought I gave it a try. Here is my review : Checking in - staff always addressing you by name and was very polite - fast and no-hassle check-in Room - Old - its an old hotel but being a 50-year-old hotel - its still fine. The comforter is a bit thin but I had a great night's sleep. The hotel room is considered quite big for Singapore. Water heater all good and aircond just nice. What else do you need - I had everything I needed for a hotel stay. Location - Bencoolen street is the best - lots of eat, coffee shops and a couple of minutes walk to Bugis junction for your shopping. I just love this area. Facility - though not important to me but I gave 2nd floor a look - small swimming pool and an old outdoor gym. Its not for me but could be important for some of the guests. Overall - i love this hotel
A Great Stay at a Good Hotel”
As a professional couple, we approached this hotel with concern having read some of the previous reviews - we couldn't have been more wrong! The rooms are clean and well maintained. Any problems were fixed on the day. The AirCon was cold and adjustable from the room. I did not try turning it off but why would you want to? Two weeks stay did not show any problems...If you are into ballrom dancing around the bed, the area may be a bit small, but we stored all our shopping, had an ironing board permanently set up and did not want for a better room! Yes, it is of older style, but we came to see the city and country, not live at a resort. Close proximity to MRT, Orchard Rd,Bugis, SimLim, and a pleasant 10 minute stroll to the Mustafa Centre and Little India make the location hard to beat. Breakfasts were not Cordon Bleu but with cereal, fruit juice, eggs, sausage, ham, spaghetti, baked beans, toast, fruit and assorted sweet things included in the room price, all eaten at a road side venue that gave the feeling of Singapore waking up, we could not have asked for more! In the past we have stayed in Hotels costing three times as much when visiting Singapore. Whilst lacking the grand Lobby and the costumed staff, The Bencoolen represents far better value for money and gave us the feeling of "Home" rather than "Cash Cow". We will stay there again.
53rd Visit To Singapore”
My 53rd trip to Singapore since 1964 and I like to stay in the location of Bencoolen Hotel. It is now more attractive and convenient as the new train station opened on 23 Oct to enable easy travel to and from the airport. The Bencoolen station is 50m from hotel entrance. From the airport buy the ticket for $2.50 . The journey is Airport to Expo then change and Expo to Bencoolen without any other change of train.. The train operates the same in the Bencoolen to Airport schedule. Since my last stay in June there has been two new developments inear the hotel ; a restaurant and an art gallery. The Hotel Bencoolen offers reliable quality accomodation in its category. Its easy access to the river; a walk of around 10 mins and the same to Orchard Rd shopping complexes. The hotel has recently opened a new restaurant inside the hotel which serves breakfast and lunch. I have made two further bookings for later in the year.
In the Heart of Central Business District”
I visited Singapore to attend a Faculty Seminar at the National University of Singapore & used the spare time touring. The nearest Bras Basah MRT station is just a 1-2 minute walk from the hotel and the next Dhoby Ghaut MRT interchange is only 1 station away which conveniently allows transfer to all 3 MRT lines. Eateries among others such as American fastfood Wendy's and Kopitiam offering a wide variety of Asian and Western food are just within the hotel vicinity. Since the hotel is situated in the heart of the Singapore business and shopping district, places of interest are also near such as the Singapore Museum, Orchard Center, Raffles Place, Esplanade, Merlion, etc. The hotel room may be small but not tightly contained. The room is reasonably designed and conducive, with adequate in-room amenities such as lcd TV, open wardrobe cabinet, hair dryer, electric water pot, refrigerator, landline telephone, electronic alarm clock, & bed side control of the lights and aircon. Hotel safety and security is adequate with the issuance of an access card that serves as an elevator pass & door room key with the provision of an electronic safebox inside the room. Everyday room service kept the room and bathroom always clean and orderly. Bathroom hot water is available and water pressure is excellent. There are few TV channels with the lack of popular cable channels such as HBO, CNN, etc; whereas there are limited good English programs. Had a comfortable sleep in bed and a pleasant stay in this hotel with a good and clear window view of Bencoolen Street & would definitely book here again. -Professor LEE MARK
Most satisfied experience with any hotel in my life”
My husband and I stayed at Hotel Bencoolen for only 1 night for our 20-hour transit. The staff's friendliness and helpfulnessimpressed us most. The receptionist made sure we found the most comfortable way to have something to eat at midnight. The porter - his name is Mohammad - gave us useful advice and was so so friendly. The hotel's location is also perfect - right in downtown, litterally 20 feet from the Bencoolen MRT station, a short walk to Little India and Chinatown, a few stations away from major attractions. Rooms are clean with good facilities and are quite spacious (compared to Singaporean hotel standard). Bonus point is they let us take a shower after we checked out. So after a day of sighseeing in hot and humid Singapore, we could feel fresh again before heading to the airport. My husband and I were so happy, we will definitely choose Hotel Bencoolen if we visit Singapore again.
Family-friendly Hotel”
Our family loved Hotel Bencoolen. The location is right across the MRT station and bus station. Food Republic and convenience stores are also nearby. All the staff are friendly and accommodating especially the bellboys and the receptionists. We were also able to check-in early as soon as we arrived. Rooms were great and they did take note of our request for a connecting room which was very convenient for our family. It could have been a perfect stay if it weren't for the internet connection speed of the hotel's free wifi. All throughout our stay, it was below 1.0 mbps which is really disappointing and awful. We can't even browse or stream properly with the extremely poor connection speed - considering that we always thought Singapore internet connection was always fast. This was kind of a deal breaker for us, but other than that, everything else was great and we will definitely recommend and stay again at Hotel Bencoolen.
My experience with Hotel Bencoolen”
I had an overnight stay at Hotel Bencoolen last 4 May 2010 with my friend. We were on transit from Bali, Indonesia on our way back home to the Philippines. It was our first time to stay at Hotel Bencoolen. I chose this particular hotel because of its good location, i.e. close to Orchard Road, but at the same time it offered affordable room rates. I was surprised to find out that breakfast was included in what we paid because my experience with another hotel near the area is that meals are excluded. We bought drinking water and placed it in the room's refrigerator only to find out again that there are drinking stations at every floor of the hotel. We appreciated this very much as it is very convenient for us and would lessen our expenses. The bed is comfortable and the room is cozy enough. It isn't too big but not small either. It's just right for our needs. We stayed at the second floor of the hotel where just outside there is a mini gym and spa. Again, we appreciated this very much because it provided a space where you could relax outside of your room and at the same time, the pool was a relief to the summer heat. I really appreciated my stay at Hotel Bencoolen and even recommended it to another friend who planned to go to Singapore.
Great Value and Excellent Location”
Hotel Bencoolen is a small hotel located on Bencoolen St and just off Orchard Road. The rooms are clean and comfortable and comes with free wifi, which is very much appreciated by foreign tourists. The staff are courteous and friendly, and most willing to give local recommendations on food and shopping. If you are interested to browse for computers and electronics, Sim Lim Square is just a stone's throw away. The hotel also has indoor parking available at the rear though the number of lots is limited. A simple buffet breakfast is included with the room and overall, Hotel Bencoolen offers a comfortable stay, excellent location and great value for yr next holiday in Singapore.
Great location - value for $$”
the service at hotel bencoolen was impressive. we faced a little problem with our room lights when we got there and 2 minutes after a phone call to the reception, they sent someone up! most importantly, the room and bathroom facilities were very clean. in terms of location, hotel bencoolen is within walking distance to orchard/ bugis - both locations known for shopping and food. lots of choices to choose from and even a 24 hour coffee place across the hotel. fort canning is nearby, if you fancy a stroll. furthermore, museums are in the vicinity, all within walking distance. for some history on the peranakan culture, check out the peranakan museum. if walking is not a preferred option, there are mrt stations and bus stops nearby. the tourist route hop-on-hop-off buses do past this area too. i would not mind going back to bencoolen hotel, if i visit singapore again.
friendly staff,good location,suitable for family”
I had a business trip in Suntec Convention Centre. However I am staying solo.It is suitable either you are family, young couple or friend.Location is very good,5 min walking distance to bugis street,15 min walking distance to suntec city,2 min to MRT station,5 min to Orchard Road, for convenience stall,it is just within the hotel area. For hotel breakfast,it simple, not much choice, but taste well. From Bencoolen to Airport, you can take MRT or Bus,easier way will be talking bus as the bus stop just 1 min walking distance from hotel.Take No 36 bus direct to airport.Very convenience. Overall, I have a wonderful 2 nights stay in bugis. Good recommended hotel as hotel come with gym and spa! You can enjoy there.I will return to this hotel again for my next business trip again!
Hotel Bencoolen Revisited”
My 52 nd trip to Singapore since 1964 and on the last 4/5 visits I have stayed at Hotel Bencoolen. Why? The location and easy access from the airport by train; the staff who are ever so nice and recognise me and acknowledge me on arrival and during the stay; value for money and has outdoor pool area and gym. It is easy to walk to the river and many of the museums, galleries and the Victoria Theatre and Esplanade Theatres. Its difficult to name an individual staff member as better than a colleague as I find them all a dedicated Team doing their best to look after their guests. I have already made a reservation for my next trip. The new Bencoolen rail station is complete but will not be in use until Oct/Nov 2017 as the underground rail line has not been completed. However when finished the station will allow travel to and from the airport from just outside the hotel entrance.
just right”
what i loved about hotel bencoolen is the location. it has a money changer across the street, 2 conveniece stores within 100m, a food alley which has a very affordable range of casual dining mix and the MRT is 50 m away as well. attended sunday mass in the next block, bugis is walking distance. its an old hote/buildingl but accommodation and amenities is still nice. except for the breakfast selection which is very limited and the same menu for the 3 days that we had breakfast there. wouldn't mind staying here again the next time i go to singapore.
Great stay at Hotel Bencoolen”
Feeling tired because my late arrival, I had an early check in at the Hotel. The front office staff gave us a free upgrade to family room because our initial room was still occupied. Receiving a warm welcome from one of the staff, Pak Cik (is what the front office lady called him). He ask us where we came from and greet us warmly with our native language. He then proceed us to our room on ninth floor. The room was actually quite small (I can't imagine the size of our initial deluxe twin room), but still comfy. It was clean and so does the bathroom, room utilities was complete and everything is working properly. Location was really good, makes it easier for us to go to Orchard Road at night. Breakfast was decent for a hotel meal, enough to get you started in the morning. The give efforts to provide variety of drinks and meal. We also have an early check out, heading to Bugis Street and Little India. Pak Cik helped us by showing a short cut through the back of the hotel, very much appreciate it. Overall, it's a great stay, look forward to another stay at Hotel Bencoolen.
Hote Bencoolen”
I arrived from the U.S. completely exhausted and a little irritable. I was pleasently surprised that the Hotel Bencoolen was easy to find (right off of the Bras Basah MRT) and the front desk staff were friendly and effecient. The room was fairly small, by US standards, but still had sufficient space with a nice size bed and a writing desk. The room was very clean and came stocked with shampoo, soap, toothbrush and free bottled water. The gym and pool area were nice (gym is a universal weight machine, bike and a treadmill) and they even had complimentary cold towels for use during your workout. Room was nice and quiet and bed was very soft (compared to many beds in SE Asia that are fairly hard). Breakfast was much more than I anticipated with eggs (cooked to order), cereal/milk, sausage, ham, toast/jam, juice, and fruit. My only complaints are that in-room wifi is not included in the price ($12 for 24 hours or $6 for 4 hours), and that they made me walk to go find an internet cafe to print-out the Agoda travel voucher (I booked the room during layover in Taiwan). Other than that though, I would highly reccomend the Bencoolen
Just enough for budget stay”
thought that it was one of the most convenient location, i booked this hotel just 2 days before my trip to singapore. it really is (just 5-10mins walk to bras basah mrt station). but just a friendly reminder-- there is a construction going on the bencoolen street, mainly in front of the hotel. so, it is a must to walk towards/from bras basah rd or prinsep link to get/drop off from public transpo (which is very inconvenient when bringing luggage with you.) the time we arrived in sg, it was raining so we don't have any choice but to ride a taxi just to get to nearby hotel, still walk around 25m before we get into the hotel itself. me and mum are very embarrassed since we have our luggage with us. the good side is checking-in was very smooth, the receptionist, concierge and a guy (maybe a waiter/maintenance) in the restaurant are very friendly and accommodating. the room (king room) is nice, spacious and clean. bathroom is relatively spacious, bathtub doesn't have rubber mat, so your risk of falling/sliding is high. breakfast is good however, the food are just placed outside the hotel (although it is covered) as well as the utensils are exposed to the street with construction outside and public just passing by.
Convenient Hotel-near Halal restaurants & Museums”
We were traveling with a 1 yo and 4 yo. Therefore it was more convenient to drive into Singapore with our tandem stroller in the trunk. To have a hotel in the middle of the city which offers complimentary parking space throughout our stay in Singapore is a luxury and plus point to choose this hotel over any other hotels of the same rate. As we arrived from a long day in the Science Centre, we were greeted by a warm and friendly concierge. Check-in was very fast too. Room was surprisingly big too for Singapore standard as the room could fit a King size bed and a single bed. My 4 yo son did his 'snow angel' on the bed as his sign of approval in comfort and cleanliness at any hotel we stayed. Otherwise he'd his complain will go on until he fall asleep or refuse to take a shower. They bathroom was also comfortably large. Even though this is an old hotel, there was no old carpet smell, furniture was well-kept and restored and maintained. Very Singaporean. Thanks to reviews I've read recently, we requested for our room to be away from the main street where there is an ongoing MRT construction going on. It was peak season but hotel staff was efficient. Even during breakfast. Variety of food, compared to same hotel ratings in Singapore we've stayed before. Bencoolen Mosque is next to the hotel and there was more options for Halal food around. It was easy getting around by MRT with our stroller. Another reason why I love walking around Singapore. Just be prepared in case if it rains. We were not and left the stroller's rain cover back home. Should visit the Singapore Arts Museum too which is just around the corner. Perfect!
Good location and worth the price”
Hotel Bencoolen is located just right in front of Bencoolen MRT station. For family with kids, it is very convenient as you don't need to walk so far to take public transport. It is also very convenient for your to take MRT from or to Changi Airport. Bugis shopping area is with walking distance, and a lot of hawker stalls and restaurants nearby. Highly recommend it.
Perfect located Hotel and polite staff”
Hotel Bencoolen is located near to everything. The staff were very polite and check in went smooth. The rooms in the older part of the hotel were a little run down, and I guess that was the reason for the fair price at a place in Singapore that otherwise is expensive. Anyhow, everything needed was there. There was some construction going on just in front of the hotel, but it couldn´t be heard inside the hotel.
Very comfortable hotel in the centre of Singapore”
My stay at the Hotel Bencoolen was comfortable and made more so because of its location within walking distance of most Singapore sites or within close distance to the underground railway. The hotel staff and management were superb. I was upgraded with special treatment by the owner/manager on arrangement. The hotel is aging but still comfortable and well worth the price. I would stay there again definitely.
Central Bencoolen”
The Hotel Bencoolen is very centrally located, with the cheapest shopping in Singapore( Bugis St Markets) only 5 minutes walk from the hotel. Rooms are spacious for the price you pay. The shower is lovely and hot and the pool is small but adequete and secluded. Taxi's are available from the front of the hotel any time of day. Breakfast is also satisfactory considering the price. We left the hotel feeling very refreshed and with the same friendly farewell as when we were originally greeted. I would recommend this hotel to the shoppaholic because it is very centrally located to everything Singapore has to offer!
