No longer the fantastic place it used to be”
1. I wanted to pay by bank transfer (Which I had done previously) because my credit card was not working. They suddenly wouldn't accept this, even though they would have had the funds before I would have left. VERY BAD service. Hence, they took almost all my cash, which I needed precisely because my card was not working !! 2. After the maid had been in my room it had not been cleaned properly. 3. The breakfast buffet which used to be quite OK has been abolished, and you now have to choose from a menucard. They couldn't get my order right (although it was actually quite simple) The waiter kept disappearing, so I had to forget all about getting a 2nd cup of coffee with my breakfast. etc. Just unacceptable for a supposedly 5 star hotel. 4. Carpets and other things have started looking scuffy, and worn. 5. There wer not a lot of customers when I was there, I am beginning to understand why. I think they have new owners now, and they are not doing a good job in my opinion. I shall not be coming back.

Good value for money for a five star hotel, but the facilities and the staff are far off from 5 star”
I paid just over EUR 100 so no doubt good value for a hotel that was ranked with 5 stars. But there is a catch, the 5 star ranking was received from the Romanian tourism authorities. This ranking has mainly to do with the room's size, guarded parking lots, the amount of toiletries in the bathroom and how many times a week the bedding is changed (I thought it should be changed daily). So do not expect a swimming pool, shops, several restaurants, the service or the plentiful international breakfasts offered by the real five star international hotel chains. The staff was very good to me, especially during the check-in. Unfortunately I did not get the name of the guy at the reception when I arrived, because I feel he deserved a mention by his name. He was very nice, polite and helpfull. The hotel decorations are amazing and you really feel back in time, though some might consider the hotel a 19th century kitch. The location is perfect, with the hotel being in within walking distance to the metro, old town walking streets and even to some good shopping (H&M on Lipscani is 5 minutes walk away, Unirea Shopping center is 15 minutes walk away). The breakfast is very basic, more like what I would expect in a motel. If you plan catching a late afternoon plane, make sure you make your own taxi arrangements. I relied on the hotel staff and it took them a while to get me one, only to blame the Friday afternoon rush hour. I would have accepted the excuses if I would have not asked in the morning to order me one for 14:00 hrs and to be answered there is no way they can order it in advance and it will take only 10 minutes to get one whenever I need it. The conclusion is that if you do not look for the "real" five stars facilities and service, you want to be right in the middle of Bucharest and if you do not mind the 19th century decorations, this is one of the places to be :). NB my review can be biased as I lived in SE ASIA for over 15 years and probably spoiled by the 5 star hotel

Luxurious, old fashioned, a taste of old opulance”
Big rooms, friendly staff, good restaurant.
the place felt like a palace. all the way down to the gold coloured topped shower accessories. high ceiling, huge beds, chandeliers, huge mirror.i felt like a king. in the restaurant, i encountered the biggest wine glass ever. it was taller than my dell e6410 notebook when looking at the screen. together with a 2006 romanian wine, it was a superb combination. when trying to get to a restaurant after 11pm, although i was failing in what was apparently finding restaurants that were "only 5 minutes away" (perhaps by car), the doorman was extremely helpful in actually walking me to an italian restaurant that confirmed they were open for business. by the time i wanted to make my order, i was told "they are sterilising the kitchen... it's closed". so my diet angel was looking over me.... where's the devil when you need one ;-)
