Old hotel, cramped room
Location is the best about this hotel.
Location was very strategic. Right at city center with many restaurants and things to do. Nothing else to make this place a good hotel. Hotel room was very old, bed was very bad, room was very cramped, privacy was disturbed by house keeping. For a 4 star, there was no iron in the room and ironing service was charged since it was done by housekeeping. Lobby personnel was not so great and could have been more friendly.

Decent rooms but staff performance has become poor
Central location, old fashioned style
I used to stay at the Maria Elena Palace a lot, but tried several other hotels in Madrid. I returned to Maria Elena Palace again because it used to be quite good, but was really disappointed by the poor staff performance. They made me go up and down, between the reception and my room, because they have made mistakes, and have generally been a mixture of rude and not forthcoming. The junior staff was quite good in dealing with customers but their managers were very bad.

good location but expensive
If you have more than one computer or smartphone, you have to pay 13.20 euros (including tax) for each device for 24 hours. All the other hotels I've been to had free wifi or allowed many devices for one price. There is one computer in the lobby but you have to pay for that as well. Tiny rooms. Only one person could walk at a time in the space between the foot of the bed and the wall!

Nice location with a little bit dated rooms
Calm place and quite atmosphere
Generally liked stay in the hotel. It is in a very calm place basicaly in the city center but not on the main street. Lobby is nice. Rooms are a little bit dated but still clean and comfortable. Rooms are quite as the rest of the hotel. Liked breakfast a lot as it was typical Spanish food nicely served in a stylish lobby.

Nice Lobby
good location and close to lots of restaurants and shopping. there were a few "ladies of the night" hanging around a shopping area not far from the hotel. walking distance to the city center. wifi is not free as it is in many locations, walked to starbucks or fridays in order to connect without charge. breakfast was just okay, nothing special. beds were as hard as rocks, asked for a room with softer mattress, was told they were all that way. they ended up placing a blanket under the sheets which helped only a little. staff not as friendly and helpful as the last place we stayed. room needed upgrades, still used an old type tv with only a couple of english language channels and one of those was from russia which had a slightly different view of things.

Outstanding Hotel
Great Breakfast, Superb, efficient and friendly staff and service
The Maria Elena Palace is an outstanding hotel with excellent facilities. The staff is courteous, responsive, and friendly. We enjoyed our stay very much. The hotel is conviently located near the Puerta del Sol, an area that abounds with shops and good restaurants. Only one negative: the hotel charges fgar too much for internet use, usally free at other hotels.
