A traditional tatami-style onsen experience on the shore of Akan Lake”
The Gozensui is an old Japanese hotel that has aged well due to good maintenance. Parking is ample and its location on the shores of Lake Akan make it an ideal hotel for those planning to visit the Lake and it's famous Marimo Algae Balls. Hot water springs are channeled into the public bath for an invigorating 44 degrees Celsius onsen dip that relaxes all your muscles. The experience is quite addicting. Bathed 5 times over the span of 2 days. For those not used to the idea of being nude amongst other people, there is a shower and tub in the room. To enjoy the full experience, however, you will need to have a fair command of Japanese, and must actually know the proper etiquette of using a japanese public bath. If you are taller than 6ft, you should also watch for low clearances as this place was build a while ago with primarily shorter Asians in mind.

Lake front hotel”
Perfect location on lake front and in the middle of Akan village. A classic hotel with old world charm, good staff and parking next to hotel. Only negative was wifi in lobby only - not in rooms.

Turning back the clocks to stay in a traditional ryokan”
This was our second Ryokan stay in Hokkaido and while it wasn't our favourite, it is one of the better places we stayed at. Customer service makes you feel like home here. The floor manager was so attentive to our needs and tried to make sure we were comfortable during our stay despite our poor Japanese communication skills. He literally ran out in the rain to make sure we had a car park twice and kept a look out for us. This was truly the highlight of our stay here as we never felt so welcome. As for the hotel itself, you may read reviews that it is old. I disagree that it is quaint and a symbol of how the Japanese used to stay. Immerse in their culture instead and I think you will find there's so much to enjoy instead of expecting a Westin or Hilton stay. Otherwise watch your heads if you are above 1.8m and enjoy

A great stay”
This is a lake front hotel and we are grateful allocated a room facing the water. Free coffee and ice cream during certain period of time which is great, but the cups are small. No wifi in room and the wifi supposedly available in lobby is near non-existence. The breakfast in Japanese buffet style is one of the most basic we have experienced. Overall we still enjoy our stay very much.

Large and decent onsens; nice fireworks from our bedroom window in the evenings; and large groups at mealtimes

Acceptable”
Very very old hotel but in good location with lots of eateries around. Front door has gaps and can hear very clearly noises made by other guests. Not worth the price pay for the rooms. Staffs are very friendly and food is tasty for the breakfast buffets.

Overall satisfied”
Pros : - 1) Location is good. Just next to Lake Akan. Good view from room and lobby, face the Lake Akan. 2) Lake Akan sightseeing cruise just next to the hotel. Received 10% discount voucher from the hotel when buy the tickets. 3) Check-in was fast. Staffs were nice, friendly and helpful. 4) Got free coffee and ice-cream at the lobby. 5) Dinner was good. Waiters and waitress were nice and friendly. I brought along my 5 years old daughter. She stayed free for the hotel but they still prepared a set of dinner for her. 6) When we check-out, they prepared bread for us for snack. 7) Hot spring is big. Got 3 different temperature of pools. Very comfortable. 8) Hotel prepared a small gift for my daughter as welcome gift. Cons : - 1) Give me a different room booked. 2) Room a bit small. 3) Breakfast very simple and less choices. Overall still above my expectation. No doubt staffs's attitude and politeness hit the high score.

Exceptional”
Nice and snug hotel with a classic feel. Rooms are mostly facing Lake Akan and for the price they offer, can't ask for much more. Good public bath in the basement. Hotel could do with more and faster lifts. Staff are helpful in assisting with restaurant bookings even though the language barrier is still there.

Good but a few things”
The best location in Lake Akon between a ferry pier and the main shopping street. Our room faced the lake and had the most open lake view in the area. It was very bright and airy and of good size. The hotel offered free coffee and ice cream during certain period in the day which is quite nice. Hot spring was good but nothing special. No wifi in the room but only the lobby but the data volume seemed insufficient to serve more than a few guests. The room rate was rather pricey. We tried the Japanese breakfast which was one of the most basic. I recommend only for the view.

Rooms were nice and cosy, with onsen in the basement. Hotel next to the lake, in the centre of the town.
