A great week in Kyoto”
We booked a room in the annex which was spacious , with Japanese and modern touches and very nicely furnished. The bed was large (two queens put together) and an additional queen sized futon for our daughter, with room left for the sitting areas. Wooden Japanese bath was nice and we enjoyed daily breakfast at the Kanra Kitchen, which coincidentally has great pizzas and pastas. We loved the four cheese with honey. A must try!

Stylish hotel...great location close to Gion restaurants. Room modern and good size for family of 4. Above all staff super helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely return when visiting Kyoto again and recommend to friends also.

Lazy staff, no assistance offered, weird layout”
Arrived the hotel with 3 big luggage’s but wasn’t offer any help. The two staffs just stood still and did nothing. No smile on their face ever. Came back one day on snowy night to find out the housekeeper kept only the bathroom and left the bed unattended. The setting of the room is weird and too narrow. Bathtub made of wood so you can’t use any bath powder etc. Staffs can’t communicate well at all in English. Not worth the money.

Superb service at Hotel Kanra!”
My family and I traveled to Kyoto and stayed at Hotel Kanra for our first four nights. From the moment we entered the hotel, we were showered with attention from the front desk concierges and other staff. Check in was a breeze, and we were each given a glass of refreshing cold sencha as well as an azuki red bean pancake sweet treat - a really nice mid day boost before setting out to lunch. Although check in was officially at 3pm, we arrived in Kyoto at about noon and our rooms were already ready to our surprise. We were thoroughly wowed when we were shown our rooms, as we did not expect rooms of this size and decor. The rooms are expansive, and the tatami seating area was a nice touch that added a little Japanese traditionalism to the interior design. Beds were adequately comfortable and we made use of the hinoki bath tub in the bathroom every night. We were given rooms that faced the temple which was a quiet street and so we slept well each night. Every morning we set out to a different part of Kyoto - Kibune, Fushimi Inari, Uji, and even a day trip to Nara. The front desk was extremely helpful in getting us 5 person taxis and pointing out directions accurately. Each time we walked out and entered the hotel, the front desk greeted us warmly and asked how our day was going which was a very pleasant touch to their hospitality. Although the hotel is not located along the main streets of Kyoto, it is 1 minute away from Exit 8 of Gojo Station, which is 1 subway stop away from Shijio (where Daimaru, Takashimaya and other main boutiques are located). We used a mixture of taxis and the subway to get around depending on where the sights were. Overall, Hotel Kanra surpassed our expectations and we would not hesitate to return in the not too distant future!

Honeymoon Expectations Exceeded”
To say that my Husband and I were thrilled to stay at Hotel Kanra Kyoto for our Honeymoon would be an understatement. For our first time trip together to Kyoto, we were impressed not only by the beautiful suite we were kindly upgraded to or the delicious and filling breakfasts every morning, but simply by the customer service that went above and beyond our expectations. I wish I wrote down the name of the woman at the front desk who was so kind to us throughout our stay. I think her name was Mika? Even though we arrived a half hour early before Check In, our room was ready with luggage already delivered from our prior hotel in Tokyo. From the moment we stepped foot inside the hotel to our sad farewells, we can't wait to return to Kyoto again one day! P.S. With record low freezing temperatures in January 2018, we were surprised to discover that the outdoor cedar bathtub retains heat very well! Don't be afraid, and make use of it no matter the temperature.

Contemporary Japanese Style Hotel”
My friend and I stay at the Kanra Kyoto just for one night in Oct. 14 as the last night in Kyoto. The location of the hotel is quite close to the Kyoto Station (1 subway stop or 20 min by walk), and it is just beside the famous temple Higashihonganji for 5 min walking distance. So the location is very good if you want to select a hotel near the Kyoto station. But you also need to know that there are not many restaurant or store around the neighborhood. I particularly like the style of the hotel which is a combination of traditional Japanese style with the contemporary modern design in the room details. For example the room is not very big (but big enough compared with other hotels in Japan) but with comfortable twin beds and Japanese Tatami living area. The Tatami Living area with the sofa which is very good for people who don't used to sit on the legs. The bath room is also very cool with shower area and wooden bath tub which is really nice. The entrance of the hotel is in a small lane which is not easily to be found but keeps it quite quiet for living. I only stayed there for one night but really think it is a good choice for staying in Kyoto downtown area.

Wonderful stay at a beautiful hotel”
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Kanra Kyoto; it may be one of our favorites. The staff made our stay a memorable one; from check-in/out, to the restaurant to the maintenance staff - they all made us feel very comfortable and welcome and helped us in so many ways. The hotel is conveniently located as it is a short walk to both the Kyoto Station and a subway station in a quieter section of Kyoto. We enjoyed many meals in the Kitchen restaurant both breakfast in either Japanese or Western style and an Italian style dinner. There is also a great wine selection. The hotel rooms are designed in Japanese style - they are very clean and comfortable. My only complaint would be that there is limited space for unpacking and storing clothes otherwise our stay was perfect.

A Hybrid of Modern and Quaint Kyoto”
We had a very wonderful time during our short stay in Hotel Kanra Kyoto. Firstly, it's easily accessible as it's right next to the subway station. The main entrance is a little tucked away on a side street so you may miss it! Look out for a 7-Eleven store nearby and you won't miss it. And yes, having a 7-Eleven just right next door is definitely a plus point. The store sells really yummy Japanese snacks. The staff at the hotel is pretty well versed in English and has no problems understanding us. They're extremely polite and always very helpful. And the room... it's HUGE by Japan standards. The bed was really big and it comes with a separate tatami area which we could sit and have tea and snacks and watch TV. They have ready yukata in the closet for you and since we were travelling with a 6 year old, they set up a kid's yukata for her as well. Lovely stay and we will definitely be back if we do head to Kyoto again....

Outstanding hotel, Great hospitality ”
We loved the aesthetics of the hotel from the moment we stepped in. The room and amenities made our stay very comfortable - very spacious, very clean. Location is close to Kyoto station (10-15mins walk); not as close to Gion though you can access from subway which is 5mins walk from hotel. But what stood out was the helpfulness of the staff. They helped us to book restaurants ahead of our arrival, accommodated food allergies and gave us flexibility to take one pre-paid breakfast as a dinner because we were leaving too early on our last day to enjoy the breakfast. We stayed in another Kyoto hotel (Gion Hatanaka) prior to Kanra which unbelievably refused to help us book restaurants in advance nor adjust breakfast for my husband's food allergies, so we really appreciated the warm hospitality coming to Kanra.

Fabulous”
The customer service at the hotel was outstanding. The room was beautiful and we loved the traditional Japanese touches, such as the in-room soaking tub. Our beds were so comfortable and inviting. We traveled with our children ages 9 and 7 and the staff made up extra beds for them while we were getting dinner. The hotel was very quiet, yet a convenient walk from Kyoto Station and also walking distance from many of the Kyoto sights. We only had one night in Kyoto but wished we had planned to stay longer. I very rarely say this, but if I return to Kyoto I would absolutely stay at Hotel Kanra Kyoto again.

Great hotel, fantastic service”
Wife and I were on our honeymoon. We wanted a great time in Kyoto. Chances upon this hotel online. Booked it. Turned out to be a great decision. Through email, we asked the hotel to help us make a reservation at Hyotei, a three-star Michelin kaiseki restaurant. The hotel replied within the day and confirmed our reservation. A couple of weeks before our trip, we found out my wife is pregnant. We emailed the hotel to inform the restaurant to ensure that there wasn’t anything raw in the menu for my wife and again, the hotel replied within a day to confirm that they had informed the restaurant. When we reached the Kyoto, it was pouring. Our luggages were wet. The staff greeted us with hot towels and green tea, and even helped to wipe our luggages dry. The staff spoke great English and provided useful information about Kyoto. They helped us bring our luggages to our room. The room was spacious and well laid out, making for a very comfortable stay, even through the typhoon that struck when we were there. We ordered a pizza for dinner through room service which came within 15 minutes. The pizza was great. WiFi was good and stable. They had really nice shampoo and shower foam. Overall, it was a great experience staying in Kanra.

Exceptional, faultless, Japanese elegance with exc”
This hotel would count as one of the best hotels i've stayed in and I travel a lot for work and play! Our room was huge with a bed that could well have fitted 4 adults! The bed was great and decor of the room was even lovelier than the professional photos on their website. I was sharing with a friend from work and the separate toilet and bathroom (with shower and beautiful timber Japanese bath), with washbasin and mirror in the main room was great for avoiding that 'everyone wanting to be in the bathroom at the same time' problem. The room had an iPod docking station, safe and high speed FREE wifi. Staff in the hotel could not help us enough and made the whole experience all the more superb. But the absolute highlight of this place is the food served in the small restaurant. We arrived late-ish on a Friday night and decided to just eat in.. Boy did we get a delicious surprise when the dishes started coming out! The food is a fusion of Japanese and refined Italian... We had a set menu at 4000 yen each and a bottle of wine. For AUD$45 we were served more food than we could consume! From the black sesame grissini, the Japanese tapas, exquisite and colourful salad to the wasabi and cheese risotto, we could not fault anything. At lunch they do a similar set menu for about 1500yen (that's about AUD$17.... I can't tell you what a bargain that is for the quality of food and service you will receive!! I will most certainly return to Hotel Kanra when I visit Kyoto again and I would recommend it to anyone looking for quiet, refined Ryokan-style accommodation with hotel service and ammenities!

Best of Kyoto ”
Kyoto is a beautiful city in Japan, rich in culture and experience - Hotel Kanra captured both. Delivering exceptional service, beautifully designed rooms and of course, great food. I would recommend this to not just my friends, but on this occasion I also took my family and they adored it just as much. A special note to commend Naomi Kondo, the food and beverage manager at Teppan HANAROKU (the hotel restaurant) his service, knowledge of the courses and accompanying wines, sake and shochu was truely an experience all of us will not forget. Thank you & see you soon Hotel Kanra Kyoto.

Superb experience staying with Kanra”
Me and my wife stayed here 3 nights for my birthday. Hotel Kanra has got very convenient location, only 2 mins walk from the Gojo subway station. Room interior has got a perfect balance of traditional and modern style, and it’s very spacious compare to the average size of Japanese hotel. The reception team is extremely friendly and helpful. Especially for Mr Fujiwara from the reception team who has been patiently assisting us on booking restaurant, booking Kimono rental and recommending good tourist attractions in Kyoto city. Also, Mr Fujiwara and Tsuka has secretly prepared a birthday gift(Kyoto chocolate) on my birthday, which was super thoughtful and sweet. Our experience with Kanra was way beyond amazing, would definitely come back again!

Best Hotel In Kyoto”
My wife and I came here on the second part of our honeymoon (from Tokyo) and was immediately blown away by the kindness of the staff and the beauty of the hotel. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and the room was amazing. Money well spent! Many of the destinations in Kyoto are very spread out so I wouldn’t worry too much about going back and forth to Kyoto station as we relied on the local buss for the majority of our time in Kyoto, which like the subway, is great. If we come back to Kyoto I will definitely be staying here again. Thank you Kanra Kyoto for the wedding gift as well!

We had a very nice stay at the Kanra in Kyoto”
Hotel Kanra is a very good option in Kyoto. It is however expensive. Since we have a seven-year old child we were forced to pay extra for the room that we had booked with two double beds. In other words, no changes were made to the room, we needed no additional bedding. The room was very nice and accommodated the three of us very well, but the extra charges made the hotel seem exorbitantly expensive, especially given the fact that there are few other amenities beyond the large and comfortable roomsm (i.e. no pool, no lounge, no gym, etc...). The Kanra Kitchen is highly recommended, especially for lunch and dinner.
