lovely hotel above the shoreline (and the train tracks)”
I really enjoyed staying at La Giara, especially once I figured out I could walk along the quieter via Garibaldi (which has sidewalks) instead of the busier via Cavour -- just find via Cavour from Recco train station, then take the first right onto via Garibaldi. Turn right on the little alley and steps between numbers 58 and 62. The steps take you to via Cavour, and the hotel is 50m on the left. Overall about 20min from Recco train station.
My room (number 10) had a view of Mt. Portofino, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It is also above the train tracks, which I did not mind but some might (bring earplugs if you mind). Apart from the train, it was very quiet and convenient -- a good restaurant up the street, and everything else a 20min walk and, if needed, train ride away.
One day I went to the Cinque Terre, and learned that trains to Cinque Terre leave from Levanto, and trains from Recco to Levanto are only about once every two hours. It pays to check the schedule in advance!
The breakfast is fine - not a huge spread, but all the necessities. The internet was a little weak in my room, but improved when I opened the door and was fine in the hallway.
