retro charm and personal service!”

classic wood furniture in good condition, caring staff, large rooms, western bathroom

though i booked my room through agoda for 2 nights, i stayed there almost a week. my room was spacious and though the hotel could use a bit of paint and new carpets, the 1960s modern wood furniture has a retro charm impossible to find in modern sterile hotel design. the evening staff, particularly alex, were always helpful and went out of their way to ensure i was enjoying my stay in georgetown. breakfast is standard fare for the area, offering the standard horrible white bread malaysia seems to adore, basic cereals, a bit of fruit, and coffee, bagged tea or juice. it's a tolerable means to get your blood sugar up until you can walk the few blocks for good homemade food, whether in a restaurant or at a hawker stall. the cleaning staff were efficient and nice; i had a nice chat with the woman who cleaned my room while i stayed in one day, as i wasn't feeling well. that even the cleaning staff here speaks passable english is incredible, both for hotel mingood and the tourist areas of malaysia. given the options available in georgetown, hotel mingood offers great value for the price. in the weeks i've been in penang, i stayed at several places in georgetown before moving out to batu ferringhi. having evaluated the options, hotel mingood is my first choice in georgetown.

Lovely comfortable 70s hotel”

Great location closed to the Georgetown heritage enclave

I arrived Georgetown very early in the morning around 3am [after driving all the way from Jitra] and went straigth to the hotel. Luckily the staffs allowed me to leave my luggage in the lobby while I went out to have an early breakfast at one of the 24 hours Indian restaurants nearby. The good thing about this hotel is that it is just a block away from the Penang Road where you can find foodstalls and restaurants operating 24 hours. After spending few hours at the restaurant, I went back to the hotel and able to wait at the lobby. I made use of the waiting time to ask the hotel staffs about the interesting places to visit and about the public transport to roam around these places. The staffs are very reliable and friendly. While reading freshly arrived newspapers, I was nicely told by the hotel staffs that my room was ready and they allowed me to check-in early i.e. several hours ahead of the checkin time. This was possible since someone just checked-out of the hotel around 7am. I was given a double room which is surprisingly very clean and spacious room. The furnishing is a bit oldies with 70s style furniture and design but all are still in good working conditions equipped with aircondition, mini fridge, tv and most importantly the availability of complimentary wifi in the room. There are also PC stations available for guests in the lobby but with minimal charge. So do not forget to bring your smartphone and laptop for free internet access if you happened to stay in the hotel. The breakfast is served at the rooftop with very spectacular view of this heritage city. Although there are not much variety but I have no problem with that at all since you have all the reasons to taste various foods at the nearby Penang Road as Georgetown is also well known for great food heaven.

Pleasant and comfortable stay”

Value for money, Adequate Parking, Close to Georgetown attractions, yet located in a quiet area.
Internet browsing at the lobby was chargeable - could have a minimum free browsing time (15 mins maybe) One of the rooms did not have a remote for the a/c - guests need to climb a sofa/chair to start the a/c

The mingood hotel is good value for money. It is located in a quiet lane, yet very close to the prime sightseeing spots in Georgetown (1-1.5km), and driving to these spots is traffic-free. There were enough parking slots for those who drove in. The rooms are good/spacious for the price, and the bathrooms were clean. We booked two rooms, and both had bathtubs with a shower, which can prove to be troublesome for elderly people. The breakfast (included in the room rate) is a healthy start to the day, with bread, preserves, cornflakes, juice and coffee/milk. The attached kitchen also serves up some quick dishes (scrambled eggs etc) at a nominal charge. The hotel had a great reading section by the lobby, where visitors can exchange books left behind by other tourists, and also loan tourist guides for a RM50 deposit. We stayed for a night, and got a good price through Agoda. The staff were friendly and helpful.

IF YOU CAN CALL A HOTEL INTELLIGENT - THIS IS IT !”

The management, the staff, the ambience

The Mingood, George Town, Penang, Malaysia THE PLUSSES: 1. It's a short distance to everything interesting. 2. The room is roomy ! 3. The room has a fridge. 4. The room has a safe. 5. The room has a bath. 6. The staff are very professional. 7. The Internet is reliable. 8. The roof-garden cafe is a delightful experience (with some stunning plants). 9. The evidence of firm and efficient management is everywhere. I'd rather have all the above positives at a VERY MODEST PRICE, than many of the negatives one can find at the more expensive and so-called "elegant" hotels ! THE MINUSES: ABSOLUTELY ZERO ! And by the way, a 98% PLUS score in over 900 reviews, is perfectly self-explanatory !!!

Nice place!”

15 mins walk from the ferry terminal. Bring a map, it helps.
the furnitures could do a lil upgrading. but it still holds the rustic charm. the corridors were kinda...scarry though. heh

if u're arriving from the ferry terminal, skip the throat cutting cabbies. One cabby quoted me 40Ringgit to get to argyll road, which according to my phone's map is probably about 15minutes walk. You'd walk toward lebuh pantai, turn right to lebuh chulia....walk straight and thats it! You've found Hotel Mingood. I must say the lobby was nice. Friendly chap who attended to me. Check-in was speedy even though i arrived late at night. Its best you call up the hotel if u're arriving pretty late. The room was stunning, the ac was working well, hot shower, a tv (with cable channels) and a bar fridge. If you're driving, Caltex is just a stone throw away. If you can't live without facebook, wifi is provided free of charge. The hotel can also arrange for some tours of Penang island. But my best advice is to get hold of a friend who is local and bring you around to non-touristy spots. I certainly had a great time in Penang. People are so friendly! Drive down south beyond the airport to Teluk Kumbar for some great seafood dinner at a fishing village.

A great convenient budget hotel in Georgetown”

Location Price Staff

I have stayed at various budget hotels in Georgetown on numerous occasions. I decided that I would try The Mingood Hotel based upon recommendation from a friend who has stayed at Mingood several times. I was very happy with the hotel. Spacious rooms with cable TV, Air-con and a great refrigerator. Included in price is a good light breakfast served at the 5th floor rooftop cafe. An upgrade to a hot cooked breakfast is available for either 4 ringgit or 6 ringitt. My room was at front of building with balcony which made it very pleasant, requested upon initial reservation. I certainly will always stay at Mingood Hotel for future visits to Georgetown, Penang. I recommend this budget hotel to all who require convenience of location at a great low cost.

Hotel Mingood, Penang is an excellent value for an”

The Mingood is an economy hotel without the bells and whistles one would expect to find in a more expensive venue. We stayed for 6-nights, are happy with the value and plan to return.
The in-room WIFI did not work one night but it was fixed.

Hotel Mingood, Penang is an excellent value for an economy hotel ****! We were referred to the Mingood by friends who had stayed there and were impressed. We took their advice and are very happy we did. The Mingood is an economy hotel without the bells and whistles one would expect to find in a more expensive venue. We stayed for 6-nights, are happy with the value and plan to return. The Mingood is conveniently located to Komtar shopping center and the central business district of Georgetown. Many of the major medical facilities, hospitals, clinics and Path Lab are also close by. Many other popular spots are just a short walk away or you can use the city bus service, which is an excellent combination of inexpensive and free buses that can take you anywhere in the city or to the surrounding areas. Taxicabs are also a good option as long as you settle on the price- before you get in. The staff at Mingood was always helpful and friendly, our room was air conditioned and clean and the bathroom gleamed. The in-room WIFI was a very nice touch and computers are also available, at a reasonable cost, in the lobby. Toast with tea or coffee was served each morning on the fifth floor, eggs are also available for a small charge - but plenty of full service restaurants are located nearby if you prefer a hearty breakfast.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.”

I have stayed at Mingood Hotel on several occasions ... and would not hesitate to stay there in future visits to Georgetown, Penang. The rooms are spacious. There is a basic self serve breakfast included in accommodation costs ... the dining facility is on the 5th floor. For the cost I highly recommend this hotel ... convenient location and spacious clean rooms. It is realistic to realise that at such a low cost to expect a facility that is not 5 stars. I am fed up with people making reviews that are undeserving negative. If you want an excellent 5 star hotel then go to a 5 star establishment and pay a lot more. My sole recommendation would be to pre-book and request a high level room at front of hotel with a balcony. These rooms are more scenic with a great air flow. There is a great television and wifi is excellent. I suggest you be open minded and stay at Mingood ... do not hesitate.

Third stay at the Mingood - I like it that much”

Location, staff, large rooms, care and attention

After staying at several different hotels, hostels and guesthouses in Georgetown over a two month period, I'm staying at the Mingood from now on. For the price range, you get a large room with many things not available elsewhere... little things like a desk and chair, your own bathroom, and nice staff. Sure, it could use fresh paint and carpet, but I love the 60s Modern woodwork and style, and appreciate the hotel for holding off on renovation in favor of keeping reasonable rates in the city.

Location, free wifi, great friendly staff, nice clean rooms, breakfast with museli
Sheets can be abit thin

Hotel Mingood is a no frills hotel with excellent service and nice clean rooms. The fantastic location at the edge of the UNESCO World Heritage Site makes this a fantastic place to be if you are there for alot of history. The breakfast was decent with unlimited servings of good wholesome food and fresh juices and great coffee. For a small price, you can get 2 sausages and 2 eggs to compliment your toast. There is a cute little corner ala backpacker inn style with a book exchange and overstuffed leather coaches. A famous eating place, Soup Hameed is a few blocks down the street and serves heart warming soup with crisp bread 24hrs a day Free wifi and friendly staff made our stay at Mingood a truly unforgetable one.

Hotel Mingood guide review”

The Hotel Mingood is situated close to all the required low cost tourist areas. Situated Jalan Argyll St Georgetown the hotel Mingood offers cheap airconditioned rooms with plenty of comfortable beds, shower, toilets as well as a basic continental breakfast including cereals, toast jams, spreads. It is within walking distance of all the food markets offering quality Malay foods from around RM5.00. A short walk away near the Komtar tower is a large bus terminus were you can catch a bus to any destination for the amazing price RM2.00.
Tea and coffee making facilities are the only downside to the rooms.

I am definately heading back to Penang in 12 months or so and will be booking into the Hotel Mingood for my next stay. The staff and management were excellent and made every effort to assist me with any problems that I encountered. Room service was exceptional and upon returning every day after touring it was a delight to find freshly made beds, clean towels and sparkling wash ares. The internet cafe was available 24 hours each day allowing me to catch up on my business needs and the price was a joke MR1 for 15-20 minutes cannot complain about that.

Great Value Hotel”

I have been staying at the Mingood hotel each year for many years. The room quality has improved in the last two years and the service remains friendly and efficient. The location is a short walk from the center of Georgetown and there are some interesting restaurants in the vicinity. I would have no hesitation in recommending it to someone looking for basic, clean, friendly accommodation at a great price.

Great place to stay while in George Town”

Location, nearby F&B. Value for money

I stayed at Hotel Mingood few years ago which has left me with great impression, even though its an old hotel but its comfortable and location is excellent! Nearby to most of the great places, food and shopping. The breakfast place at the roof top is a must to try, great scenery! Overall, my family enjoyed the stay at Hotel Mingood and we will return again for our next trip to Penang.

spacious room and wonderful service”

very near to georgetown's main attractions

This was our second stay in Mingood and it keeps getting better. The room is clean and newly painted. We had a modest breakfast at the sky garden which has a great view of georgetown. The staff were friendly and helpful as well. Yes, it's an old hotel but it's well kept and with the price I paid I can honestly say it was a bargain. Will definitely stay here again.

Great location but budget facilities.”

great location, large room, friendly staff, safe underground car park.

My wife and I had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay at Mingood Hotel. The room was big with air-cond and all the basic amenities.. no complains whatsoever..the car park was gate-locked at night, an excellent safety feature..plenty of food-stalls and restaurants around the hotel..a value for money hotel..will definitely stay at Mingood Hotel again whenever we visit Penang..will recommend this hotel to my relatives and friends.

nice hotel”

Staff , location , cleanlinessWe

We have stayed at the Mingood before, and it is good to see that it is still the friendly and welcoming place that it was .The staff are what make any hotel and the people who work here do make make the Mingood Hotel a nice place to stay. It is not flash but I wouldn't go anywhere else . The Mingood so handy to everything. The lady who works in the breakfast area even handed out maps and guides to all in the dinning area on our first morning.

Great Hotel - amazing value for money”

Location, roof top views

i have stayed at the mingood hotel several times. if you want a modern hotel, don't stay here. if you want a spacious, clean, good value hotel, then consider it. stongly consider it. the staff are helpful, but not "in your face". the rooms are decent size. you get your own balcony if you stay at the "front" of the hotel. the breakfast included is basic, but there are plenty of other local options nearby. really, for the price you pay, this is as good as it gets in penang. i can see it just being more and more popular amongst budget travellers. i checked out the yeng keng hotel, at almost 7 times the nightly price, it's smaller and not that great. no fridge in the room.
