Good location, 3mins to Karasuma-Oike Station”
we stayed at hotel monterey kyoto, twins room, roome size is big enough for two of us. the hotel is only 3 mins walk to kawaramachi-oike station, and 15 mins walk to shijyo-kawaramachi crossroads. starbucks is just next to the hotel. location is just in center of everywhere. we found also free wifi signal available in guest room. clerks speak fluent english.
We love Kyoto”
I picked Hotel Monterey Kyoto because of the high reviews and we were not disappointed! the location was perfect for us as we wanted to visit the Nishiki Market which ended up by chance being just a couple blocks! The staff were very friendly and could speak english which made it easy for us to communicate. The room is very modern, the bathroom is a good size and the bed is very very comfortable! We would definately book our stay at Hotel Monterey Kyoto again!! Thanks!
Hotel with European charm in central Kyoto”
the hotel monterey in kyoto feels like a european hotel when you first walk in. the staff is quite friendly and the hospitality is fantastic. there are several english-speaking staff if one does not speak japanese. the rooms (twin beds) were slightly small, but still reasonable compared to other japanese hotel rooms. each floor also has a security door which is accessed by the room key which may make some people feel safe. there is complementary internet and the minibar stocks drinks at vending machine prices which is nice. the decor is a little gaudy with striped wallpaper/red walls, but is a minor point. the hotel is located in the city center and is a reasonable walk from other areas like nijo castle, gion, pontocho areas. the cabride from kyoto station to the hotel. and there are subway/bus routes close to the hotel making sightseeing pretty accessible.
Spacious room with new facilities”
Stayed here with my wife and 4 year old son. Staffs were great, both at the reception and concierge. Room and bathroom looked like new with full set of toiletries. Entrance to the Lobby and the Library cafe were grand. Location-wise, it's almost perfect. It's about 10 minute walk to Nishiki market and Shijo-dori, which were the centre of attraction in Kyoto outside of temples/shrines. If you continue a bit to the East, you'll reach Gion area and Kiyomizu-dera is not that far away. The hotel is 5 mins walk from Karasuma Oike subway station exit no.5-6. The reason why I say it's "almost" perfect is because the exit has no elevator. If you bring large luggages like we did, you'll need to take other exit which is further. Karasuma Oike is apparently not being directly passed by major bus lines that goes to tourist attractions. You need to take the subway, or walk to the nearest major bus stops which about 15-20 mins away. Other than that, we were very satisfied with our stay in Monterey Kyoto.
Exploring Kyoto”
The Hotel Monterey is a beautiful hotel. The lobby and Library room are very grand. The room was large for Japan standards. We had 2 large and 1 smaller single beds in the room, but it still felt spacious. We were able to access BBC world news in English on the TV. The bathroom was large with a big wide bath and powerful shower. The room came equipped with a variety of toiletries, slippers and pyjamas. The hotel was easy to access, 3 stops on the subway from Kyoto station, and a short 5 minute walk from Karasuma-Oike station. Lots of handy shops and cafes/restaurants nearby, eg 7 11, Family Mart, Starbucks, McDonalds as well as Japanese restaurants and Ryokan. 10 minutes walk brought you to a lovely covered shopping area, great for souvenirs. A short walk from the hotel is Shijo-Dori where you can catch a bus into the Gion district. We found the hotel to be well positioned in Kyoto, with good access to public transport, taking you to all the fantastic sights the city has to offer. I would certainly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again.
Wonderful Stay”
We are traveling with our 21 month old son. Hotel Monterey accepted our bags which we shipped from our home in another prefecture and held them after our stay so we could explore some more. We were impressed with the location near a subway station, taxi stand, shopping, and two Starbucks. The rooms were always quickly cleaned and made up and the hotel is quiet at night so our son could sleep soundly. No issues with check-out and all staff we spoke with had excellent English skills. The rooms also have everything translated, so there are no questions how to operate the TV or heater. I will try to get a room here again when we return to Kyoto. The deal on Agoda made the price value very high!
Monterey Hotel Kyoto”
We stayed at the Monterey for eight nights. Check-in and -out was very easy and efficient. All staff speak english. The Hotel is brand new, or at least it seems. Very clean as it is always the case in Japan. The room had nothing special, usuall international hotel room, but very quiet. The best is the location. It is very central, 2 min walking distance to the two subway lines and walkable distance to main shopping areas and seightseing place. We rented a bike in a small bike shop nearby at very low price (the shop is not listed in guides and the man was not speaking english). Great experience, cycling Kyoto is very easy and very popular in Kyoto.
Great location ”
The most advantage the Monterey hotel has is certainly its location. It's very central; less than two minutes walking distance to the metro Shijo station that is only two stations away from Kyoto Station. We walked to reach most temples. There is a Starbucks just in front of the hotel, really good when you have kids that want juice and cakes for breakfast. The hotel is nice and clean and the staff willing to help. The room was a bit small for us because we were with our kids but they have a small bed under the main one. And we even could open our suitcase, though we were packed in the room like sardines. But it's Japan and we easily got along with it. The bedsheets were changed every day as well as the towels (but we wouldn't mind them to change them one day another or even less often). We didn't try the food they provide but like most of place we went in Kyoto I guess it should be delicious given people we saw eating there. It's definitely a place worth the money.
Hotel Monterey Kyoto review”
We had two adjoining rooms at the Hotel Monterey Kyoto for two adults and two teenagers. The rooms were very nice, quiet, free internet, all the usual standard toiletries and pajamas. The location was excellent and central to restaurants, shopping and public transportation. We had a great meal on New Year's Eve in Escale, the French restaurant in the hotel. The food was excellent, perfect service, quiet, not rushed. My only complaint was that I had booked a room with a double bed but there were none left when I arrived, so had a room with two large twins. This was only a minor inconvenience.
The Monterey Hotel, Kyoto.”
The Monterey Hotel in Kyoto is a very special hotel. It is magnificently designed and the rooms are very large (compared to the other hotels I have been in in Japan) and immensly comfortable. The bathroom, which is important to me, is large and full of the latest gigs. Breakfast is included here, which makes it very comfortable - no need to look for a Starbucks! There is a nice variety of foods, Japanese and Western breakfast, with everything one really needs. The location is also very good, 5 minute walk from the nearest JR line. The staff is very friendly (as everywhere in Japan) and there is even a Cathedral where weddings take place.'The Library' is a lovely little restaurant which serves super afternoon tea at reasonable prices. The owner of the hotel has his collection of paintings up on the walls and these include a couple of original Degas and Monet! There is one man whose job is to guard these paintings 24 hrs a day!
A comfortable retreat at the end of the day.”
Hotel Monterey Kyoto was a great hotel for us to stay at when visiting Kyoto. It is centrally located and the subway is within easy walking distance - even with heavy suitcases! The beds were large and comfortable and the room was large, especially compared to other hotels we stayed at in Japan! The bathroom was large and well heated, and the staff spoke English very well, were friendly and helpful. Highly recommended!
Clean well situated hotel”
I have nothing but praise for the Hotel Monterey Kyoto. The breakfast buffet was really good. The room was clean and spacious for Japan. One of the best things was the location, we were only in Kyoto for a short time, so this hotel being so close to Karasuma Oike subway station was perfect. Karasuma Oike allows access to the both metro lines in Kyoto.
Hotel Monterey Kyoto”
My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Hotel Monterey Kyoto. We had a double room, that was a lot more spacious than others we'd stayed in while in Japan, plus very modern and new. The staff went out of there way to be helpful. It was only a short walk from the main shopping area and across the road from the subway and starbucks. When you get out of the subway station, take the south exit, come up the stairs and turn left. The hotel sign is obscured by a tree. It's only 100m down the road on the other side.
Monterey Kyoto is a great hotel”
Our stay at the Monterey Kyoto was a very pleasant experience. From the roomy accommodation to the handy location for easy walking to all the wonderful sites, the Monterey is a clear value choice. The staff were quite helpful, the rooms immaculate and the breakfast choices made a great start for our busy days exploring the many absorbing venues within close proximity - e.g. the Imperial Palace gardens, the Museums and the fantastic Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka traditional streets around the Kiyomizu-dera temple area.
Second home in Kyoto ”
As it is the nth time that I am staying in the hotel, it is heart warming to be recognized by e staff and be welcomed back home. That was touching. It is always a pleasure to check in to a room that one is very familiar with, that one knows where things are, how things work, and a warm familiarity to it. It is also refreshing to see that some suggestions are taken by the hotel to improve comfort and make the stay a pleasant one. One look forward to coming back again to Hotel Monterey Kyoto.
good value, great location. ”
i didn't see selection to ask for a non-smoking room. although when we arrived, we were given a non-smoking room without being asked. all the other hotels asked. when we realized this and inquired, found out that they were fully booked for the weekend. they gave us some deodorizer spray and asked us to spray it around the room. would have preferred they get someone to do it. so best to call ahead and request as the hotel seems to book up fast because of its location. overall very satisfied with my stays at the hotel monterey hotels. stayed with them at kyoto, osaka and tokyo. rooms are spacious compared to other hotels and showers are strong.
Great Western style hotel in Kyoto”
This was our fourth visit to Kyoto, but our first time at the Monterey. It was by far the nicest hotel we stayed in. It is well located and quite elegant. The concierge was very helpful with all the information one needs to tour Kyoto including helping us get tickets to concerts, dances, etc. She even had the latest information on which cherry blossoms were blooming. I highly recommend the Monterey.
Very nice rooms in the heart of Kyoto”
The Hotel Monterey Kyoto was a wonderful suprise for us. The rooms were big by Japanese standards. The bathroom design, the walls in particular, really caught our eye. The toiletries were nothing short of luxurious. And the location? Perfect, the subway entrance was practically next door, there were 2 convenience stores downstairs for those late night cravings and a big department store was just a block away. Would definitely pick this hotel again when I get a chance to go back to Kyoto.
An Ideal Location”
The Hotel Monterey Kyoto is a modern hotel that blends the styles of many different culttures. The room we had was a bit small by Canadian standards but very nice. The buffet was good. You should buy vouchers at the front desk as they are available at a significant discount. The one thing that is missing is a gym but Kyoto's sights offer plenty of opportunities for exercise as many of them are in the mountains.
Gorgeous hotel”
The Hotel Monterey Kyoto is an elegant and classy hotel. Staff were plentiful and amazingly helpful... They all bent over backwards to help and spoke perfect English. Located in Downtown, in walking distance to everything you want to see in the immediate area and a couple blocks from the subway & bus stops. Very convenient. I would have expected to pay a lot more to stay in a place like that! We would definitely go back.
