Great Hotel With Great Staff”
Great Onsen. I think this is the best onsen view in Kinugawa Onsen area. In daylight the view is great. But at night the view is better as they use spotlights to highlight nature around the onsen. The spotlights create a serene effect showing old beautiful trees along the river. No other hotels does this in Kinugawa. The good part is the onsen is open all night (If I remember correctly it is only closed for cleaning 9am - 1pm , Nature lights are until 11pm). Plus the staff are really warm and kind. For the room, we reserved a shared toilet and bath, but to our surprise the room had its own separate toilet and bath. So I think shared toilet and bath in Agoda description refers to the onsen. This hotel is one of large ryokan complex built in the past decade so it is highly probable that each room has its own toilet and bath . Highly unlikely that it is like a capsule hotel an guest house with shared bath and toilet. (I maybe wrong).

Traditional japanese with onsen”
The location is about 10 min walking distance from train station. The hotel itself is quite old but it doesn't matter comparing to their service and onsen facilities. I would recommend for traveller who would like to relax in japanese onsen and atmosphere.

Fun place to soak”
It is easier to get here by car than train... it is about 45 minutes from Nikko proper using mass transit. The rooms are a little dated and wall paper peeling a little bit. However the rooms are super clean. The futon was especially comfortable. The little snack and tea they left delicious. The view from the room was amazing. The Onsen was great as well. The breakfast was a bit hectic but a good time with good and plentiful options.

First time in a ryokan”
It was my first time to stay in a ryokan so I can not compare it to anywhere else. we got free breakfast and 3 spacious rooms for a family with 7 adults and 2 kids. The view of the river was the best. Free yukatas, free private onsen, and free hot tea. The only con is that kinugawa onsen does not have a lot of restaurants open at night and it would be good if you can order food from hotel or they can extend dinner time.

Nice for a night if you look past the dated interior. ”
Price wise for a night in the area it was the best going. The room was nice and the river view great. Outside Onsen was lovely. The hotel inside is straight out of the 70’s but if you look past the hallways the Onsen and view from the rooms make up for it. It was a nice relaxing night with great Ramen close by. Did not eat in the hotel.

Good value for money.”
Pros - great public bath, decent breakfast and dinner, ticket for free alcoholic drink, big rooms, awesome river view from the room, relatively cheap for what you’ll get out of it Cons - old and unkept building that’s dark in some areas, not very clean, the yukatas smell bad like they were never washed, could use a huge overhaul to become a great hotel. Everything is stuck in the 70s (the telephone in the room could belong in a museum in a couple of years) Overall a decent accommodation with good value for money.

Nice hotel but no wifi in the room”
It was a nice hotel. There is an abundant buffet for breakfast . There was no wifi in the room and no curtains or whatsoever so the sunrise light woke me up.

Excellent”
The staff was very nice to us even though they dont speak english :) The room is quite big and the cr is spacious enough for japanese standards. The best part is the private onsen! The only gripe i have is the food.

Old but gold with beautiful views ”
The hotel might be in need of some renovation, but this itself gives it a rustic charm. The hotel has karaoke and onsen too, so the slightly inconvenient location is made up for by the fact that once you check in, you can find everything you need in the hotel (there’s also a convenience store just across the bridge). The view from the balcony in the morning is amazing, looking down on the massive river.

Very good”
Very inconvenient that the hotel does not receive any credit/debit card. We had to find ATM machine, which was not close to the hotel, to withdrawn cash. The hotel is in good location but quite old. It's not worth for money If you don't use the onsen facility. Staff were nice and helpful

Kind Staff”
Pros: The hotel was about 10 minutes from the station, the staff were very helpful and kind, and the outdoor bath was lovely. The whole place had lovely views of the area. Meh: No internet, the hotel style is outdated and catered for an older crowd, and the food was subpar. Con: Mattress felt like I was sleeping on a rock - slept terribly on it and woke up with my whole body stiff and in pain, despite getting more than 8 hours of sleep. I also found several spider nests and cobwebs. There were no screens on the windows, so it was hard to open the window/doors and enjoy the view. The food was mostly cold and not great quality/not tasty.

Old building far away from train station”
Hotel located quite far away from train station walk 10-15mins. Hotel view are nice near the river. Enjoy seeing moutain view. Facilities provide towel big and small and toothbrush. Also green tea bag with condiment in your room. Pillow was too hard for me.

Interesting older hotel up in the hills”
The hotel's clientele seemed to be older Japanese tourists. There was very little English spoken by staff or guests. A very old school, traditional experience....very interesting but a bit awkward to negotiate without knowing some Japanese. Keep in mind this is 50 minutes from Nikko town by train.

Nice view, helpful staff, but not clean”
The hotel has a nice view and helpful staff, but the place is old and not clean, all communal areas; the elevators, the floors, the Onsen area, the wall, the ceiling, etc., are full of dust and spider webs (even inside the room), the sofas and chairs are stained. It’s such a shame.

Good for one night stay”
I liked the Japanese style room and the river view is stunning. But the bathroom was dirty so I did not use it. I just went to the communal bath which has really good amenities. The most disappointing thing was that I saw and killed a flying bug in my room at 2 am in the morning. I did not even open the balcony door so I had no idea how it got in there. It is just good for one night stay really. The staff was nice though and it is located in a nice, quiet place. It is just a 10 minute walk from the station which was convenient.

Acceptable”
This hotel needs a major renovation or at a minimum a serious deep clean. Don’t be fooled by the photos, those are not beds! They’re futons on a wooden platform. I wouldn’t stay here again nor would I recommend it to anyone.

OLD AND NOT CLEAN, BUT THE OUTDOOR ONSEN IS GREAT.”
The hotel is old. Hallways are gloomy and some have cob webs. The room is okay it's clean but not all. My friends room has a cockroach. Luckily, ours didn't have any. The balcony view is great though and also the outdoor onsen. It's just that the hotel is old and not so clean.

Terrible Experience. Stay Elsewhere. ”
This hotel was terrible. It was quite cheap so we weren't expecting much, but the standards we were met with were unacceptable. I know that onsen towns like this one have struggled a lot this year, but basic cleanliness and hospitality are not expensive to provide. We would certainly have been able to look past the dingy, poorly kept common areas, but that was just the start of things. Our room was filthy, particularly the bathroom (see photos below). The floor was dirty enough to darken the bottoms of our feet and the futons and bedding we were given were stained. It smelled like stale smoke. Breakfast was, unsurprisingly, also bad. It would have been cafeteria-level if the dishes had been clean but, of course, they were not. The main staff were also rude. When we checked-in, the man minding the desk was baffled by our questions about the location of our rooms and the public baths (despite the fact that everyone present spoke fluent Japanese). The conversation was so frustrating that we decided to wait until morning to talk to the day staff about our concerns. In the morning when we spoke to the front desk again about the state of the room, they just said "Sorry." and waited for us to pay. Japan sets a HIGH bar for hospitality, but this place would have been a disgrace anywhere. If you're traveling to the Kinugawa area, be warned.

Terrible!!!”
This is the worst place I’ve ever stayed. The price is cheap but it’s not worth it. The rooms are not clean, there was mold all over the shower, dirt in the sink and on the walls, and bugs everywhere in the room. When we told the staff (a rude old man) he didn’t care or apologize. He just put us in another dirty room. The breakfast was also terrible. It’s better to save your money and stay somewhere that’s actually close to Nikko.
