Good for backpackers”
We enjoyed our stay there. There were no lift/elevator, luckily, our room was just on the second floor so it's not that hard to bring our luggage in our room. If you'll just stay at the hotel at night, then this is right for you
Family Friendly in best location”
We are travelling with a 2-year-old boy and this hotel was family-friendly. The staff were so nice. The room was spacy our kid can play in the room. We had the room with low bed (more like thick futon on the floor) which was safe for kids he can climb up and down himself. The hotel was also within walk from station, minimart and shopping street. There are also a park with playground nearby.
Nice and cozy”
Best location with just few minutes walk from JR station, Lawson, 7-11 and Ameyoko walks. The room were a lot wider than average hotels in Tokyo. The staff were super helpful. We stay here for 3 nights, left for Kawaguchiko and came back for another 1 night and we can leave our luggage at the hotel. When we arrived the lughage even waiting for us in our room! one small trouble is that this hotel has no elevator and third floor with large luggage is a bit trouble.
The only thing I liked was the location of the hotel — 5 minutes to Ueno. The hotel is unreal dirty. Walls, floor, bedspreads, furniture - everything is stained. Flakes of dust stick out of the ventilation. On the second floor there is mold on the walls. But the worst thing is that the hotel is home to HUGE (half the size of a palm) black cockroaches! The staff knows about it, after our complaint just handed insect spray.
Worth the price for location”
It’s an old hotel with no elevators and the facilities clearly need some renovation (though they are already in the process of renovating the upper floors). But the hotel is in a very good location, around 3-5 min walk from Ueno station and they clean/replace towels everyday. Also, they allow you to have your package delivered to the hotel so i was able to receive several packages with no hassle at all.
Nice and affordable hotel”
Nice Price, and just few minutes (~7 minutes) walks to Ueno Station and additional few minutes to Ueno Park. Nearby ( ~ 1-2 minute walk) have 7-11. Very friendly staffs.
Good location, hotel facility is good, value for money option ”
We stay in this hotel for 8 nights. Overall it was a nice stay. The location is great as it located near Ueno station and just across the road to famous Ameyoko market. Staff is friendly despite some of them unable to communicate in English. Recommend for budget tourist.
Location is actually nearest to the metro station。 if you want to stay at this hotel, you should find the big pachinko building nearby. Room is very comfortable. Staff ate very nice, there is a free coffee in the morning and staff are trust worthy. You have to leave the key before going out as its a big one so the owner is worried if you lost it. The old man at the front desk is very Nice. He even instructed us where to find the nearest ramen shop. Thank you so much!
Has everything that I need”
As other reviews stated, it was rather dated and the bathroom is small, but it was more than enough for my 2 nights stay. Very close to Ueno station and the shopping street Ameyokocho. The location is the biggest advantage. Love that they provide free coffee in the morning. I have to leave the keys at the reception everytime going out and the reception closes at 2am. I dont mind that because I dont really go out at night but might be an issue to others.
Nice for the very first tourist in Japan”
Well, at first I was looking for Airbnb to stay but choosing hotel is one better choice. The hotel close to the city but not crowded. Close to railway and many tourist place. The room is quite small. I am asian but feel too tight when stayed here. Others are good.
Great location and big room ”
Very old hotel. The room is very big but there’s a problem when you travel during cold season as the heater cannot warm the room. And another weird thing is you need to give your hotel key to the receptionist whenever you leave the hotel. We feel abit inconvenient as we have to lock our luggage before we go out. The bathtub also not very clean.
Hotel is near Ueno station , can walk. The price is resonable and comfortable.
Cheap, accessible and reasonable place to stay in Tokyo”
Very convenient location near Ueno Station, though it was a bit hard to find at first (there were instructions on the website but we still failed, haha. Maybe a map from Exit 3 of Ueno Metro would be good? XD). Area was also good considering the abundance of restaurants, convenience stores, supermarkets, etc. nearby. Room was spacious and comfortable enough, albeit a bit dated (the heaters were difficult to operate and sadly no modern Japanese toilet haha). Cleanliness ok, the staff are friendly and accommodating, esp Kyoko-san who owns the facility. No elevators but the building is only 3 floors and staff kindly help with handling the baggage (no prob for us but may be an issue for those travelling with older people). We were also able to leave our baggage for a bit after check-out so we can walk around the area. Overall a good place to stay if you are looking for a cheap and reasonable place to stay in the city.
A hotel near Ueno stn”
A short walk to escalator that brings you up the gigantic flyover that leads to Ueno station. The room was quite old with TV on the bedside table. So watching TV from the bed was awkward. No elevators in the building. They served complimentary nice morning coffee at the lobby.
Cheap stay in a great location”
My friend and I stayed for 2 days. The price reflects to your stay, so the bed is really small for 2 people , and i could barely fit in the small bathtub. You also needs to give out your room key when leaving the hotel. Except for above, it's a really valuable place to stay if you have budge.
Good location as its a walkable distance to Ueno station and train station back to Narita. It was hard to find at first but once you find it, it will become a shorter walk in your mind thereafter. Owner was very nice but I did not do my research well and found our there is no elevator hence we carried our stuff (big luggages) up to 4th floor :) Other than that, its a good value for the money.
Location is nice close to Ueno Station , Ameyoko. ”
Good location. Nice staff can communicate in English. Very quiet room, facilities enough for my travel. Mostly I need only comfortable place to rest. My plans was travel around Tokyo and neighbor city. Valuable to stay.
not good but not the kind that u wanna get out as soon as u get into the room”
good things are that it closes to station and has all standard hotel facilities. For the price it offers, it is certiainly a value for money option. however, the hygiene is really a concern, dusts are noticable and small cockroaches walking around occasionally. one big cockroach body just under the desk, not sure if it just died or if the room hasnt been clean up. overall, if price is a concern, it is not a bad choice
Friendly hotel besides the heart of Ueno”
Hotel New Tohoku situated at the commercial side (East) of Ueno Station. This implies you can avoid the crowded tourist side (South West) of the station but still enjoy the benefit, 5 minutes walk can do. The hotel sounds to me a family run business with extremely helpful and friendly staff, all well spoken English. The hotel occupies entirely a 3 storey building, no lift. My room is at 2nd floor, and according to the Japanese standard, the single room is relatively spacious and I can easily manage my luggage. There are a few convenient stores besides, but not so many restaurants around the hotel (that's why it is quiet). Nevertheless, also a 5 minutes walk you can reach out to the crowded side of Ueno for plenty of meal choices. Ideal for solo traveler or who is looking for value for money hotel adjacent to one of the key JR stations.
Pros: close proximity to Ueno station, free toiletries, towels and bathrobes changed everyday, friendly staff, free wifi Cons: location a little tricky to find, no elevator, room and bathroom was small. Verdict: the pros greatly outweigh the cons. Would recommend this place to travellers on a budget.
