Charming and friendly, but slightly disappointing”
The staff was helpful, knowledgeable and polite, the pool and view of the large volcano serene and special, and the privacy of the hotel could also be a selling point.
The room and accommodations overall were slightly less convenient than expected. The AC was only available for limited hours (only on for part of the night, for instance, and part of the day), and we had a back room with a view of a dusty construction site. Our room was loud (doors slam loudly) and did not have a mini-bar, but the beds were fine, and the room was clean.
For the price and from the reviews, I expected Orsa Maggiore to be relaxing and comfortable. The physical hotel was lovely, the breakfast and pool were beautiful, but our room was hot (AC only went on during certain hours) and our balcony had a very un-spectacular view. The staff is as charming as can be; we passed one of them on the road, and she gave us a lift to the base of the Gran Cratere. It was also close to the black sand beach on the one side of the island, but a solid 15-20 minute walk from the majority of attractions at the busier port near the Gran Cratere. If we had a more well-placed room and the AC worked continuously, this would have been a tiptop stay.
