Good value for money, good service and location in Georgetown”
I'm glad I was able to get a good deal with Agoda for Hotel Penaga. My husband and I went for a short holiday in Penang and we wanted a nice, affordable hotel that had that old world charm and was well located so we can easily get around Georgetown. Hotel Penaga is within walking distance from some good hawker centers, restaurants and cafes so its location is convenient. The staff were helpful and friendly from check-in to check-out. The room was nicely decorated and was comfortable and cozy. The free stuff at the mini-bar, and free afternoon tea (free tea, coffee and some biscuits/local pastries) at the restaurant were a pleasant surprise. There was a decent selection of food at the buffet breakfast and the brewed coffee was good!
Best hotel in the world?”
Agoda asked me if this hotel the best in the world? My answer is a big YES (although I admit I haven't been to every hotel in the world). It's what every 5 or 6 star hotel should be (by the way Hotel Penaga was rated as 4 stars). Big and classy room with comfy bed. Big bathroom with separate shower and a large jacuzzi tub. High-speed wifi and free mini bar items. The location is right in the middle of Georgetown heritage area. The architecture is stunning and the staff was very friendly. I've stayed in more expensive hotels and gave glowing reviews for them but believe me, Hotel Penaga still beats them all.
Wonderful boutique hotel in heart of Georgetown”
Our stay at Hotel Penaga was a wonderful respite after a disappointing experience at the previous place we stayed in Penang. The location is wonderful if you are looking to experience the street life of Georgetown. The room itself was quite nice, with a wonderful balcony to enjoy the evenings. I had seen previous complaints about the breakfast, but we found it very good, with nice, fresh variety. The pool is tiny, but that was okay. The staff were unfailingly kind and made our stay a very positive experience-when we make it back to Georgetown, this will be the place we look to stay at!
Historic charm and modern comfort”
Hotel Penaga is a truly lovely small hotel conveniently located just off Jalan Penang in the middle of Georgetown. While our room was a little exposed to road noise(others would not be), the room and hotel facilities more than compensated. Every staff member we met was warmly helpful. Breakfast was included, free wi-fi available on each floor, and a free internet computer available in the library - yes with a selection of quality books to borrow and read. Even the contents of the mini-bar were complimentary(refills were not.) While not a cheap stay, the quality and comfort we experienced make it memorable.
Lovely suite in a great hotel - returning guest”
This was my second stay at hotel Penaga. Depending on whether I want to spend little or more money on my accommodation when I am in Penang I either stay at the Hutton Lodge across the street (very affordable) or at Penaga (very beautiful). This time we had the transfer suite, a beauty on its own, with two balconies, and a beautiful room, and bathroom. The sitting room is tiny, the breakfast not so good, but all else is very very nice. And the shower is also great. Will come back again. The suite we stayed in was on the second floor, in an adjacent building, without elevator. But they carry your suitcases. All you need to do is walk up. And the view and the suite are worth the effort.
Amazing new hotel in good location”
we originally booked 2 nights at the hotel penaga but ended up staying 4 as we liked the hotel and penang so much. the rooms are spacious with comfortable beds, large and well equipped bathrooms and beautiful wall art and furnishings. the staff were extremely helpful and treated us like vips even though we arrived early and were backpacking. the staff booked our onward transport and also contacted agoda on our behalf to change the date of our booking. there is free internet and the breakfast selection was continental or local cuisine plus fresh fruit. this was one of the best hotels i have stayed and was well worth the relatively expensive price.
Gorgeous boutique accommodation in Georgetown”
Had a wonderful two-night stay at Hotel Penaga. It is not very big and grand as it is boutique accommodation, but this certainly adds to it's charm and coziness. The hotel is done up in lovely, natural decors. The room we stayed at was amazing, large super-comfortable bed and a jacuzzi tub, with modern amenities. Buffet breakfast included in the package was delicious! Also loved the location, quite central in Georgetown, so it was a bit noisy, but not very bothersome. Only weird thing was the hotel pool, which is situated right next to the restaurant windows, a bit weird to be seen swimming by diners. But all in all a fantastic hotel, truly recommend it!
Great hotel near the historic center”
hotel penaga is a very nicely renovated old house, close to the historical center of georgetown. the rooms are quite spacious and well decorated. the staff is very friendly and helpful (e.g. our flight was in the evening, but despite having checked out they let us use a room for a shower before heading to the airport). the bar is very cosy, and the restaurant is very bright. only drawback was the room facing the main road. it was therefore quite noisy, and required ear plugs to sleep. i would therefore advise to take a room with balcony or the bigger rooms, which are all facing the inner courtyard and its quiet.
Exceptional”
That’s what I kept telling myself as I scrolled through hundreds of choices for hotels in penang. I am so glad that I chose the penaga. From the warm greeting at reception our stay was perfect. . It is beautiful, well organised, has lovely rooms with view and fabulous baths, and a pool. Service in the hotel was faultless and I thought the staff were absolutely wonderful and a credit to the company. I would not single out a particular member of staff as all were unfailingly polite, happy and wanted to make our stay as memorable as possible. It felt like everyone was interested in us and wanted to do anything they could to make it better. They succeeded -
Dear Nurdiyana, Greetings from Hotel Penaga. Thank you for having chosen Hotel Penaga as your choice of accommodation during your recent trip to Penang. It was a pleasure having you here. Thank you very much for staying with us. We are certainly glad that we have lived up to your expectation during your recent stay with us. We would like to let you know that we are appreciated of your support and we look forward to the pleasure of being service to you again.
Well designed hotel in the heart of Georgetown”
Hotel Penaga was a pleasant surprise from the usual standard in Malaysia. A refurbished and redesigned set of two adjacent corner blocks, it is beautifully designed and much fun to explore. The staff are amazingly friendly and always happy to recommend the "best" food joints in Penang. We stayed in one of the standard rooms (Hutton 29) and were pleasantly surprised to find a decently sized bathroom with spa. The bed was large and comfortable with great high speed wireless access (of course with the usual glitches which were corrected quickly). Again, the beautiful furniture was noticable, with large chests and wooden cupboards aligning the walls. However the food leaves something to be desired. It does comparably well in the Western food department, but its local food is below par. It is directly opposite a great local joint that is open quite late so it's not much of a problem. Overall, a hotel I will definitely recommend and hopefully return to.
Cleverly design”
This hotel is an outstanding mid-range with balance of historical and contemporary design. The building itself is a modified old structure, it located in a walking distance of Georgetown Historical core. However, the hotel is equipped with all modern comfort. the design is pleasing the eyes. Not purely historical but actually a nicely twisted style with flashy color artwork and handsome furniture. I love the selections of artwork and plant in their backyard garden. One thing that Hotel Penaga should upgrade is their amenities. If they have such gorgeous hotel, nice staffs, good kitchen and want to attracted the flash packer in a long run, then they must invest in wider range of toilet amenities...
Nice historical hotel”
We stayed at Hotel Penaga for 5 nights. It's a really nice hotel - there's a lot of thought and detail put into old colonial style and artwork and room decor are pretty cool. And whilst the room is old, it's still comfortable. Location wise, a short walk will take you to many of the Penang tourist attractions. The bus station is 3 minutes around the corner, although to be honest Penang public transport is decidedly ordinary. The hotel restauarant is ok - breakfast isn't the best ever but there's western and asian options available.
A gem of a place with wonderful service”
Hotel Penaga was the perfect place to stay on our recent weekend trip to Penang for my husband's birthday. The staff were fantastic - helpful, responsive and smiley both on email and in person. The room was fantastic, very spacious and private, and the garden surroundings really make this place special. Hire a bike along Chulia St to get around the street art and delicious foodstalls in the old quarter, and cool off in the pool when you get back!
Great Niche Hotel”
Hotel Penaga turned out to be a great gem in the heart of Penang...would recommend to anyone who has the budget for it. It is considered a little pricey but it was worth it. Unfortunately thrifty personality will not appreciate the intangible and the art of green building and tactfully preservation of the colonial building for this price point.
Enjoyable stay with excellent staff service”
I am glad to have chosen Hotel Penaga although it was our first trip to Penang (with 3 other travel buddies). We totally enjoyed our stay at the hotel, with its spacious rooms and large bathrooms. The staff provided excellent service and were able to attend to our queries. Highly recommend this hotel to people who enjoyed the cozy ambience of a refurbished colonial shophouse.
Great hotel with nice location”
we are a couple with 18 months old daughter. we chose penaga hotel for our 3 day trip to penang. and we are very pleased with our decision. we originally booked hutton deluxe with balcony but got upgraded to transfer suite. this was really nice surprise as the room was very nice! the room was big and spacious. the decoration was very nice and we found a good spot for the baby cot in the room. there were 2 rooms one more like a foyer with tv and sofa and the second which was the main bedroom. this was good as we could watch tv while the baby was sleeping. toilet was also nicely quipped. there was no elevator to the room but that did not matter as the hotel staff was friendly and helped us with the luggage. overall the room was lovely and really worth the money. even with normal price. only complaint that we had about the room was the noise of traffic coming from the streets. luckily the traffic during the weekend was not that bad but still bit disturbing. breakfast was slightly disappointing. this was mostly because there was too few staff to refills food. quality of the food was ok.
Beautifully unique hotel in an ideal location”
hotel penaga is ideally located, within 10 mins walking distance from komtar and popular food stalls like red garden and new world park. rooms are beautifully styled with antique furniture, and i must say that we enjoyed a jacuzzi spa bath a lot! the service staff are generally friendly, too. probably the buffet breakfast is the only thing that didn't tick the box, but this might be because the hotel doesn't expect the guests to have a big breakfast, and instead hit the road for yummy street food that penang is known for. overall, great stay, though.
Beautifully restored hotel in central location.”
we could not fault this hotel. the service was professional but also personalised, all staff were friendly and welcoming. our room was beautiful with a four poster bed, stained glass windows with shutters. the bed was very comfortable and the linens and bedding were of a very high quality. the bathroom was stunning with a jacuzzi. the restaurant where we had breakfast was a lovely open room with the lap pool adjacent. the breakfast itself was not overdone but perfectly adequate. the coffee was superb. we had to leave very early the last morning and a breakfast pack was prepared for us to take on our train journey that day. we would not hesitate in recommending the hotel penaga and would love to return.
Lovely Heritage Building in the Middle of It All!”
For a weekend getaway from Singapore, I booked 4 rooms at Penaga Hotel for a group of 8 adults (3 Hutton Deluxe and 1 Transit Suite). We were pleased to arrive with an upgrade to the Clarke Terraces for two of the rooms, part of a full two-story terrace house to ourselves. The downstairs living room was a great socializing and meeting place for the group before going out together. The original Transit Suite was beautiful and spacious, but if you are in the lower floor, you will hear people walking on the old creaky wood floors above you all day and all night. We ended up switching to another Transit Suite on the top floor. The staff was very accommodating and we enjoyed that room much better. Breakfast was pretty basic , but satisfied us. I'd recommend checking out the cute cafes around Penang instead. Overall, the hotel was great for what we wanted!
Lovely hotel in the heart of Georgetown”
We had a great stay at hotel Penaga. It's a lovely hotel with beautiful deco and furnitures. Both the bedroom and the bathroom were super clean. Very convenient location - just 3 minute walk away from Campbell street and to convenient store Hotel staffs were friendly and helpful. The complimentary breakfast was delicious. My husband ordered hot chocolate in place of thr complimentary coffe. We only discovered that we needed to pay the normal price for it. (it'd be nice if they can tell us in advance then decide whether to put in the order or not) Wifi was not fully functioning in our room as we were assigned to a room at the end of the corridor.
