Great Location with very accommodating staff”

Location, Flexibility of Staff

Hotel Royal is location in the Al-Borsa area in Downtown Cairo- it is right at the heart of Coffee and Shisha Cafes, filled nightly with lots of Egyptians from all walks of life- great for people watching and getting to meet locations. That said, be prepared for a less than quiet stay- but you dont really need that if you're here to experience Cairo. The location is great though, 10 min from Tahrir Square, Groppi, and many facilities and shops around the corner!

Decent budget hotel”

The Hotel Royal is a good choice if you're looking for a budget hotel in downtown Cairo that is central to major attractions. Don't expect luxury and don't look too closely into the corners. Although the general areas are clean, the corners are grime- and dirt-filled. The wifi is slow and erratic. The basic breakfast is ok for one or two mornings. The friendly and helpful staff help make up for the hotel's shortcomings.

Nice hotel with friendly staff”

downtown cairo, close to metro and restaurants

This is def a hidden gem in downtown cairo. very friendly and helpful staff if you want to know where to eat. They did recommend a good restaurant to us. clean hotel and rooms. please don't let the noise from the street restaurant deter from staying here. Noise does die around 12:00am and it gets super quiet. yes, for some, it might be too late but if you want value for your money and don't mind early noise. Here is absolutely the choice. comfortable bed too. wifi is good and free. didn't buy tour from hotel so not sure if it is expensive but staff were not pushy about it. wish them the best and if quality stays the same, it will be very busy hotel soon. highly recommended.

Clean budget hotel with personal service”

Great location, clean spacious room, good breakfast for the price, very friendly and helpful staff

Small hotel in central Cairo - walking distance to all the attractions, staff assisted with good tourist info and tour packages. Staff really went out of their way to accommodate our needs -We were allowed to book in earlier as our flight landed at 05.00am When there was a problem with the lights in our room , they offered us another room. Showers are a bit awkward, as it is not separated from the rest of the bathroom - a bath mat would help! We will recommend this hotel to all our family and friends who consider visiting Cairo!

Small modern hotel ”

Great location, reasonable price and simple deco

It's black and white deco brings this small hotel a little bit modern touch. Staff working there are all very nice and friendly. I made reservation online at last minutes, they check me in even before the agora confirmation fax sending to the hotel.( I showed my confirmation for sure) The hotel locate right on a small road with many drinking and food places. We stay there at weekend, a lot people sit on the road for chatting and drinking, showing typical local nightlife in Cairo.

fantastic budget hotel. the staff are super attentive and will go out of their way to make sure you have a wonderful stay. in addition to great staff, the hotel was located down a street teaming with cafes and life. people hang out at the cafes, playing backgammon and smoking hookah late into the night. it had a wonderful atmosphere. the location was also convenient to several other attractions downtown, including the egyptian museum.

good backpacker option in the heart of cairo”

central, friendly staff, cleanish

A nice little budget hotel run by some very friendly guys in a busy low-end cafe district behind the central bank - well positioned if you plan to spend time exploring downtown Cairo. They've made a valiant effort, and the rooms are half decent with a cupboard, wood floors, and a separate glassed-in bathroom cubicle. Poor finishing work, so lots of cracks, broken panels, misaligned doors, etc. Wifi works fine. The usual unsatisfying breakfast (crappy fino bread with jam & cheese triangle, omelet, yogurt, Lipton tea of coffee), served in your room if you like as there is not really a common area. The room came with free airport pickup, and the contracted driver - a very nice chap- was there on time and smiling. Lots of cafe noise at night, plus the incessant motor of a water pump, but the former dies down around 11 and it's quiet in the mornings. Like other budget hotels, the Hotel Royal has struggled due to the tourism slump since 2011. Their sister hotel is busier and priced accordingly.

Gem of a hotel in downtown Cairo”

Excellent location to explore Cairo

This small hotel is in an alleyway. The alley transforms into a tea drinking, sheesa smoking and Sports watching TV in the evenings well past midnight. The friendly noise and commotion does not lend to early night sleeping. Once I adjusted my routine I enjoyed this hotel with its clean rooms and excellent staff.

Friendly owner

The hotel was a little bit hard to find at first, but once we found it, it was easy to find the next time. We had a nice little room. The owner is a very nice guy who gave us many helpful tips. We also had the opportunity to meet his father who shared lots of Nubian history with us. They were also kind enough to share their evening meal with us, and we sat and talked over food and tea for a few hours. That was a wonderful experience.

Depends on who you are”

If you are an experienced world traveler, who is not put off by developing world standards, and not overly fussy, this works fine. I am hesitant to criticise the place much because of the very affordable price, and I felt I got fair value for my money. The photo on Agoda is not anywhere close to what you will get, but I was happy and slept well, and the staff was very nice to me and didn't try to sell me anything.

Bugs”

First, The location is good. It's in a good part of town near metros and some good dining and cafes. It's walkable to Tahrir SQ and the Egyptian Museum and Nile River. If you're brave enough, you can walk to Khan-el-Khalili and the Islamic Quarter as well. These points are the only reasons I would recommend this place to anyone. Second, The price is fine. Third, The staff. The lady who served us breakfast in the mornings was nice and kind. She is both of the stars given to the "Staff" category (2/5). Fourth, Cleanliness. Bugs: flies, gnats, mosquitoes whatever, we were bitten by them. Cigarette burned bedding. "why did you stay? or not complain?" you may ask; well, Cairo is a pretty awful city and we just decided to keep our heads down until our flight left so as not to have to run the gauntlet of scams and thieves in town while finding another accommodation/cancel our current one. Pro-tips: do not take part in the tour packages offered from the hotel, they're WILDLY overpriced and just unnecessary, you can do better on your own, and we did. $60 USD for 2 people for round trip to the pyramids via the hotel, or $20 by taxi? Final comments: Don't come to Cairo, but if you must, stay somewhere better.
