Character”
Any chain hotel is just like any other chain hotel regardless of the city. This place has history and character. The lobby is beautiful and unique and every floor has a story in the hall ways. The rooms are clean and cute with everything you need. The English Pasties pub across the street is fabulous. So close to all the downtown events and venues. Why stay at a generic boring chain when this gem is right where you need to be.

You can't beat this location”
This hotel is located near everything in downtown Phoenix. It is very old and has an interesting history filled w movie stars and a ghost (I love "haunted" hotels)! My 15 year old and I enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again.

Historic hotel close to convention center ”
This hotel is clean and comfortable and about 5 minute walk to convention center. I love the history in this place. I was across the hall from the Marilyn Monroe suite - she used to stay in that suite. And there is a ghost on the floor I stayed on. The hotel is not as up to date as other more expensive hotels, but it has everything you need. The staff were very helpful.

Great for location, but not for the stay”
I reserved this hotel through Agoda months before the Phoenix Fan Fusion event during Memorial Day weekend. The hotel itself was fine and the location is fantastic, allowing me to stay later and take a quick walk back. Being across from the Cornish Pasty and down from Dunkin and Starbucks was awesome, too. However, as many people have noted, the walls of the hotel are extremely thin, like paper thin. Now, while 95% of this is primarily on people not considering others, even the movements of people (like going in or out of their rooms) could easily be heard. Also the bathroom is just so small; I've had better and bigger bathrooms for the same price or slightly lower.

Rustic and nice”
The hotel is a bit older and the charm comes from that. Facilities reflect that but was still fresh in the room when it was hot outside. I would stay there again anyday. Worth the price.

Loved It!”
Great ambiance and history, and the staff were very nice and approachable. There is a signed book about the history of Hotel San Carlos available for purchase at the front desk - I regret not buying it! ***I would definitely stay here again!**

Vintage charm”
I loved the vintage charm of this hotel. The location was perfect; walkable to a lot of sites downtown. The rooftop pool was under maintenance during my stay. I wish they mentioned that when I booked. Several reviews mentioned the weak AC. I liked not getting an Arctic blast everytime I walked in. The ceiling fan on high plus the low key AC was perfect for me. But if you don't have the ambient temperature of a cat, this place may not be for you. The attached Mexican restaurant was great for breakfast, but fills up fast. The Irish pub next door has Guinness on tap and their kitchen is open late. Good coffee is about three blocks away and much less crowded than Dunkin' which was two blocks away. Price was right for a solo traveler.

Interesting downtown choice”
This is almost what the website says, old and historic. That means small rooms and antique bathrooms. We were disappointed that the roof top pool and bar were NOT open and hadn't been for years. False advertising there. But for the $ and location it can't be beat.

Very Nice”
This is a beautiful historic hotel. Some negative reviews are about how dated it is but this is a historic hotel- it's supposed to be dated. Lovely decor, super kind staff.

funky comfort”
This is the second time I've stayed at the hotel, both times sharing a room with my sister while visiting family in Phoenix. Great value. I like its location and personality. If you need upgrades to the latest decor, don't come here.

Older, raw experience.”
Clean room, older with extension cords and such. Its a cheaper room in center part of town. Hot water comes and goes which was interesting, like dodging the super hot stream in the shower. Bed was comfy and finally no room AC, it has a good fan and central shared air in the floor which was pumping decent. When other rooms are 400-800 and this was 170 and all you do is sleep and shower before leaving dont pass it up.

A beautiful old building in a great location, but she really needs a face lift”
The hotel staff was very nice, my room was kept clean, but I feel the aging thrift store looking décor from the 1980s is holding this hotel back. The building is old and so I can overlook the small bathroom and thin walls. This could be a much more successful hotel with the right "set dressing". She needs to look historic and classic, which would not be too hard to do. For example, the door to the pool looks more like an emergency exit to a roof or alley, I was afraid to use it to peek out. The art in the hallways, could definitely benefit from a "less is more" approach. Overall, I would recommend this hotel, yet with a disclaimer that it will be a bit of an adventure.

Historic hotel near airport ”
We went to the hotel San Carlos to experience the history and the hauntings. The history was definitely there an interesting oh, that we did not experience any hauntings. This sweet, little hotel near the airport made it very convenient for us the next day.

Paper thin walls”
Great location, friendly staff. Room very small, old furnishings and carpet but worst part are the paper thin walls. You can literally here every thing that happens or is said next door and in the hallway.

While we appreciate the views of all our guests, we are incredibly disheartened to see your feedback shared in this manner. Our hotel is 92 years old, and we do like to preserve the history of the hotel. Did you happen to notify the front desk about the complaints you had so we can accommodate you with another room?
Renovations”
I booked one night at Hotel San Carlos in late June specifically because they have an outdoor pool on the roof. I was very excited about having the opportunity to cool off at the end of a very hot day. When I got to the hotel, I learned that the pool was closed for renovations. This was disappointing to me. I wish I could have been notified of this change. Summer in Phoenix is no joke. The air conditioning in the room was also inadequate to the task. The hotel itself is great. It’s charming and historic. I will return. I just wish there would’ve been some communication about the things the hotel currently lacks.
