This hotel is a welcome haven from the hustle and bustle of downtown Kathmandu and offers 94 elegant and comfortable guest rooms. The hotel was previously a Rana Palace and was converted in 1964 but still retains its most of its authentic Nepalese atmosphere. Each of the 94 guest rooms are tastefully decorated with wall hangings and classic furniture with large arched windows and modern amenities such as a satellite TV and mini bar. The Kailash is a huge ballroom type restaurant that serves local delicacies as well as International favorites set in a beautifully decorated dining room. There is also the Kunti Bar where guests can relax and unwind after a long day in an original Nepalese environment. Whatever the reason for your stay, Hotel Shanker will make your stay a good one.

Nice hotel, great location”
We were travelled to Kathmandu for business, the location of Hotel is very convenience to us as our client's office is located at Lazimpat too. The room is very spacious, clean and comfortable. The hotel staff is helpful, and the breakfast taste good too. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Shanker Hotel and will return to this hotel if travel to Kathmandu again.
My favourite hotel in Kathmandu”
The Shanker is one of my favourite hotels in the whole world. Can't rave enough about the food in the wonderful old world restaurant. The location is stunning with acres of fabulous gardens, a pool, & cafe. Hotel is a former palace & the architecture is stunning. Rooms are cosy & comfortable, the plate of home made chocolates, & fruit bowl was a nice touch. Staff are lovely, especially the wait staff, & the friendly & efficient travel agent in the lobby. The only downside is it's not right in Thamel, however it's only a 15 minute walk away, so not bad for Kathmandu. Also the bathroom is a little older & dark with dark tiling & has a shower bath combo which I hate, just a shower is fine, so be careful stepping out of the bath here. However despite it not being the most modern hotel in Kathmandu it has a lot of heart & soul & I would highly recommend staying here for anyone visiting Kathmandu.
Memorable Stay at Hotel Shanker”
Got a great deal through Agoda and hence we were little apprehensive about the quality of the rooms. All our doubts were laid to rest after we checked in. The rooms allotted to us were spacious, neat and clean. In fact the entire hotel is spick and span and beautifully maintained. The staff is well mannered and courteous. The breakfast is grand and sumptuous. Only problem is that at times wi-fi is a bit erratic. I am sure the management will take care of this issue in the future. On the whole it was a memorable and pleasant stay at Hotel Shanker. If you are planning to stay in Kathmandu, this amazing property is not to be missed.
Very nice stay ”
I really had a very good 2 nights stay in hotel shanker, and it is the best hotel when I was in Kathmandu, staff is nice and helpful, room is beautiful, hotel building is in ancient look and with more Nepalese elements which are what I like,I will stay again if I visit Kathmandu in the coming day and will recommend shanker to my friends who are going to kathmandu
Great Hotel All Around”
my friend and i stayed at shanker twice: once at the beginning of our trip and then we returned to the shanker after a weekend in pokhara. both times we had a great experience. although we booked a standard room, they automatically upgraded us to a suite, which was very nice. the room was nice and spacious, the bathroom was good size, and the included breakfast was good. the shanker is a respite from the chaos of kathmandu, and it allowed us to recharge each time we went back. the staff was very attentive, the room service was decent, and there were even a couple shops at the hotel selling nice items. all around a great stay.
Unique hotel in Kathmandu”
the shanker is one-of-a-kind in kathmandu. the city has numerous inexpensive hotels in busy thamel and quite a few generic global chains, often located outside the main city, but few that combine luxury while still feeling like you are in nepal. the shanker has all the amenities of western chains but also charm and a reasonable price. highly recommended.
Beautiful Hotel in Kathmandu”
Delightful 2 night stay at Hotel Shanker. This beautiful former palace is almost like a paradise of its own, highly contrasted against the city of Kathmandu. The staff is very nice, food in restaurant is good and there is a very nice swimming pool. The travel desk is very helpful, we booked day tours through them with guide and van provided. The hotel is located very close to Thamel - area where all the bars / restaurants / shops are. Highly recommend to anyone staying in Kathmandu.
Amazing Hotel”
We had a perfect stay at Hotel Shanker! My husband and I are comfort travelers and we were surprised by this hotel. It's so well maintained. It's historic, but with all the modern amenities. The entire hotel is just so gorgeous, elegant, and high quality. The staff was amazing as well! It was the nicest of all the hotels we stayed around Nepal and India, and for about the same rate. Also, this hotel is well known by taxi drivers, and sits just outside of the famous Thamel area. You can easily access Thamel by foot, but don't have to put up with the noise and traffic. It's a beautiful sanctuary away from the chaos of Kathmandu.
Wonderful Stay, good location & highly recommended”
We had a wonderful stay in Shanker Hotel, highly recommended, located in center of Kathmandu. All of our hotel arrangements, tours and adventure activities are booked by Breakfree Adventures, a leading adventure company in Kathmandu. They did a great job on choosing hotels, selection of guides etc. If you are plan to visit Nepal, get a free information from Breakfree Adventures or book a trip on your own style.
Wonderful Kathmandu Hotel”
We live in Kathmandu and have enjoyed getting away to Hotel Shanker a few times. The pool is great, the gardens have plenty of space for our family to play, and the food is alway delicious! The poolside restaurant has the best burger in Kathmandu. The location is also wonderful to access other nearby attractions. I also have to say the staff is very attentive and customers service minded. Highly recommended!
Great staff - suites of varying quality”
Even though the Shanker was being renovated I had a good experience at the hotel. Staff were very efficient arranging pick-up from the airport, the airport transfer itself, storing baggage when I went on a trek and doing some laundry for me. The pool and gardens at the Shanker are its best feature. The food provided in the restaurant and through the poolside menu are excellent although the included breakfast is of a lower quality though still not too bad. One thing I would mention is that I booked suites before and after my trek and I can say that the suites at the Shanker are of variable quality. The suite I booked on this occasion was of fairly standard quality while the suite I was given on return from my trek was of a much higher standard and quite excellent.
Best place to stay in Kathmandu”
Our agency arrange our stay in Shankar Hotel in Kathmandu which was very wonderful stay, highly recommended!! The Shankar hotel is located in Lazimpat which is about 15 minute walk from center of downtown. All of our hotel reservation, city excursions, flight tickets and adventure activities are booked by Breakfree Adventures, an excellent tour company owned by group of local guides. This guys are highly recommended for your adventure travel to Nepal himalaya.
Shanker Hotel is nice, clean and good food”
Excellent value for money. We stayed at the Yak and Yeti and this place blows that out of the water. The service at the other hotel was terrible. The Shanker knows how to treat guests right. I would stay here anytime. Nice pool area for Kathmandu too! It is a little old and dated but from what I have seen in Kathmandu this is great! I recommend this place for before and after trekking. Great location near Thamel.
Old World style”
My stay at the Shankar was very comfortable. The best thing about the Shanker is the old world style with it being a converted Rana house. Carved wood, stone, marble, stained glass are everywhere. The room was very comfortable with a bath, shower and hot water. The flat-screen TV had a great range of channels. Breakfast wasn't the best I've had in a top-range hotel but good for Kathmandu. Another great feature of the Shanker is the pool. One of the main reasons I booked here.
Very typical hotel in Kathamandu city center.”
The Shanker Hotel is well located in Kathmandu city center, and in spite of this it is a very relaxing and pleasant place where to relax far from the traffic of hte city. Breakfast is done with a buffet well organized. There is also a nice restaurant with international cousine, with great dishes. A hotel that I suggest to spend some days in Kathmandu.
Welcoming, Comfortable with a Regal feel!”
Love the Shanker! If I were to recommend any hotel to stay at in Kathmandu this would be the one! An old palace it is regal, the staff are beautiful, the buffet amazing (try the mangoes and curd...too die for!)A quick walk into Thamel for shopping, a plate full of momos and an everest beer, or pick up a taxi nearly always available straight off the road or just a day of relaxing by the pool after a trek...it is the perfect location and has a touch of class about it!
excellent hotel with very helpful staff”
we had 7 days tour and in these 7 days we went 3 different places like kathmandu, pokara, chitwan. and the best service, food, hotel was 'shanker' hotel with excellent room, food, friendly staff , location, safety, close by shopping area,5 mins walk to greenline bus stop. excellent location to live in.
Palace Hotel on a budget”
There are many more affordable places to stay in Kathmandu but Shanker Hotel is probably one of the best value for money choices in Kathmandu. The building itself is just bursting with stories of a time that feels far removed from the dynamic and sometimes volatile present that Nepal has. The staff was very helpful - they even helped me send out my postcards! :) The internet is also quite fast inside the rooms. Location-wise, it's still relatively central. We took a 4km walk to Swayambhunath and it allowed us to see the city through a different way. Once you're in the room, it feels like you're sheltered from the rest of the noise and chaos of the city - it's perfect. It was easy to get a shuttle to the airport as well (just 700-800 NPR).
Old world luxury”
The Shanker is a top-end hotel and, while probably not the most luxurious in Kathmandu it does really have style and character being an old Rana Palace (the old ruling house of Nepal). The communal areas have real character and nice art and carvings. Also a fantastic pool and sun-lounge area. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Exceptional”
we visited Hotel Shanker for the 4 th time. and always we were totally satisfied. it is good located, so we can reach everything in Thamel and other places by foot easily. the people at reception , in the restaurant and everywhere else are very kind and always helpful. the rooms, the restaurant, the garden and pool are well cleaned at all the time. we will be happy to visit Shanker again and enjoy they kind service. thanks a lot
