Staff ruin an otherwise charming hotel”
We stayed at this hotel for 4 days. The hotel itself is beautiful. it has old world colonial charm, a decent pool, and it's location is quite good. However, partially due to Agoda's questionable and non detailed "kids stay free" offer, I ended up in a 45 minute shouting match with the hotel managment. Kids stay free according to Agoda and this hotel means that they may sleep on the floor. or you may pay an additional 1500 rupees per night for a folding bed to be wheeled in. So the room was booked for 4, but there is only one bed included, and two bottles of water, and two towels. So Kids stay free simply means we will allow you to let your kids into this room. It does not mean they are accomodated for. Add to that the bloody pigeon corpse that stayed on our balcony for days, despite our complaints... it was our least favourite hotel of all we stayed at in India. Agoda needs to be more clear in their number of bed policy. a family of 4 requires at least 2 large beds. Free.
Outstanding hotel.Enjoyed the pool and garden for dining. Breakfast was wonderful
Luxurious hotel for a good price with many facilities ”
It is located quite far from the Varanasi glass (40 min Tuktuk drive during traffic hours otherwise 20 minutes, prices between 150 - 250 ruppies. There is a friendly old Tuktuk driver in front of the hotel, he is very helpful. The hotel itself has very modern confortable rooms. The bar and restaurants serve good food against reasonable prices. The pool is great. Definitely recommend to stay here if you are looking for comfort and rest after a hectic day at the ghats.
Fantastic Hotel !!!”
Great hotel with excellent services, really good breakfast and clean large rooms. Would totally recommend for anyone traveling to Varanasi and needing to stay at a great hotel with a lot of history and character
Place with character ”
This hotel always stands out because of staff & the sheer character of the place ..!! Amazing hospitality & a cultural bowl of India . This hotel meets international standards & show cases Indian wedding , which are always spectacle ... If in varanasi this place is must try .....!!!;)
unclean. unhelpful. bad food”
The room was not clean. The room staff were not helpful. They refused to give us our complimentary water and every day things had not been completed in room cleaning. The breakfast was horrible. Nothing to eat except good fruit. Cereal stale, coffee tasteless, Indian food no good. No ambience.
Nice hotel for an escape from the chaos”
If you're looking to get out of the hectic old city streets and traffic of Varansi, Hotel Surya is a great place to go. It's a one stop shop with a nice restaurant, wonderful spa, bar, pool, and relaxing garden area. Recommended, but not on a budget.
A relaxing stay at an historic hotel”
Hotel Surya was fantastic. The main building is apparently 200 years old. There is an air of British Raj to this historic hotel in this holy city. If you are bothered by the wear around the edges of this venerable hotel, then you might like the Holiday Inns at every Interstate off ramp in America.
The room I stayed in at this hotel has definitely seen better days. Tired & in much need of some repairs & maintenance. The al-a-carte restaurant served delicious food at reasonable prices. WIFI was chargeable & intermittent.
A good, reasonably priced hotel in Varanasi.”
I enjoyed my stay at the hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful and can help arrange tours around the city. The onsite restaurant and spa are both good, so if you feel overwhelmed by the city, the garden and grounds of the hotel provide a nice respite. The only downsides: make sure you see the room you are getting in advance. Some have been nicely renovated, others haven't. And don't expect fast Internet here. It's turtle slow.
Good hotel worth the money with nice staff.”
Our stay at the hotel Surya was pleasant and great. Though the rooms could have been bigger considering we booked a deluxe room, apart from that everything was superb. The staff's were pleasant and the customer service dept continuously kept taking feedback from us asking if everything is upto our satisfaction. They have a good restaurant and the coolest thing is the huge open space at the centre. It makes the whole hotel feel airy and it refreshes us with its lawn & plants. Overall a very good hotel to stay.
Not the best for business traveler ”
My first night I stayed in a room that was anything but "premium". It was a total dump; with tons of bugs and situated behind their banquet hall next to an area that resembled something similar to Dexter's kill room. Terrifying. They moved my room into the main hotel area, and that room was nice; much newer, but the shower was hardly a trickle. I had to use a bucket to shower everyday. Not the end of the world, but not exactly what I was expecting from the room, which was otherwise ok. Best part about the hotel was the cafe on premise that had excellent shisha, if that's what you're into.
Great hotel !”
Great hotel ! We stayed in a deluxe room which was a bit tatty, but clean and comfortable. The garden is pretty, nice place to sit, the pool is great with good staff to get food or drinks, the restaurant was very good, food was the best we had the whole month in India. Its about 20 mins by Tuk Tuk to the ghats but that was no problem, there always one or two waiting outside and it was so nice to come back from the mania which is Varanasi to the relaxing ambiance of The Surya. Very enjoyable stay and would happily recommend .
Great location but small rooms”
We landed at Varansi at the unearthly hour of 5 am, but we were treated very nicely. We did not have to wait long for a room. I liked the layout of the hotel with a central parking area and lawns where one can sit in the evening, sipping a cup of tea. The location of the hotel is also superb, in the green leafy Cantt. area of the city, close enough to the railway station and also the major tourist spots.
Great Restaurant, rooms are worth what you pay!”
We booked the 2 premium rooms on the top floor (320 and 321), there was a connecting door between the rooms but room 321 felt slightly more spacious and the bathroom was a little bigger. We stayed for 7 nights and booked the trip spontaneously a month before, initially i was trying to get a hotel on the river so we could be amongst it all, but it was all booked out. Hotel Surya was suprisingly good. The restaurant is what really made it an enjoyable stay. Made to order omlets in the mornings at the extensive menu served really good indian food. We had a massage there on our last morning which was such a nice way to end the trip. Although still around the $35 mark. The room cleaner was a very sweet man who was always excited when we said he could clean our rooms and left on the bed, lotus and swan shapes out of our towels. The rooms have little balconys, which was really nice to step out onto for fresh air or a morning coffee. Only problem (which didn't bother us all that much) was that the hot water wasn't always hot and didn't last that long if it was. But this is to be expected when travelling through India, even in a lot of the mid range hotels. Not sure if it is like this all the time but we attempted to book a sunrise tour through the hotel and it all failed. It was a lot more expensive than a tuk tuk or any other local driver, we were told the car was to leave at 6am, it didn't leave till 6:30 and the car didn't start because it was so cold so my boyfriend was pushing it a long with some others for a good 20 metres. Then the driver stopped for petrol on the way as we watched the sun rising gradually. By the time we got down to the river (at the wrong ghat) the sun was pretty much up and we had to watch it from the ghats as the boat hadn't made it's way to us yet. But I do recommend actually watching the sun rise over the ganges as I have done it before and it is incredibly beautiful. Benefit of not being in the centre of town: Quiet!
Great hotel around attractive courtyard ”
this was the favourite hotel of our trip, relatively clean and quiet, with cafe, restaurant and shops within the complex. set around a large green lawn with fountain and most rooms overlooking the lawn. had computer room for modest fee. good breakfasts buffet style but eggs cooked to order. restaurant meals were ok. the cocktails looked nice but didn't want to risk anything with ice in.
Lovely hotel - our second visit”
As it was our second visit we had high hopes of another very pleasant stay. Unfortunately the hotel had a big group staying so we were put in room 109, which was next to a building site and had no verandah or view of their central lawns. On the second day we asked to be transferred and were given a lovely room, with veranda and king size bed. We used our mosquito net because there were a few mosquitoes around. The cafe provides excellent chips/french fries for a welcome mid-day snack.
excellent location away from the madness of town”
We stayed in this hotel because other reviewers said it was a good location away from the city center. We are very happy we chose this hotel. The city center is really crazy and this is a nice place to come relax. The restaurant is good and has pretty fair prices as well. There is also a mall with a food court, Mcdonalds, and Pizza Hut about a five-ten minute walk away. The staff at this hotel are excellent. We used the travel agent to book a train ticket for us, well worth it. The wifi works well but you have to pay for it which was a let down - it should be free as every other similar hotel in India was. The pool was nice, but needs drained and cleaned really well. Also the room was nice and clean except for the bathroom which had mould growing in between the tiles, it needs cleaned really well also.
an oasis of calm and tranquility ”
Having spent a number of very hectic weeks elsewhere in India the hotel surya provided a welcome opportunity to relax and chill out. It is well located away from the hectic city centre and provides comfortable rooms, delightful pool, gardens and spa area, and an excellent restaurant. The restaurant manager was most informative and courteous, always spending a few minutes every day to talk to us offering helpful tips and advice. The hotel also arranged an excellent driver who ensured that we were transported safely to our next location.
The room we stayed is clean and comfortable, with a lovely balcony and a nice garden view. The staffs r helpful and friendly. The massage centre is perfect and the food in the resteraunt is delicious. The only weak point is being a little far from the river, but it is ok since the tuktuk is very convinient everywhere.
