A beautiful hotel with attentive staff”
Ideally located for the LGBTQIA+/Leather/kink traveller, the Hotel Whitcomb is directly opposite Sam’s Diner, has a BART station just steps away, a leisurely half hour stroll to the Castro, and only a few blocks from Mr S Leather and Wicked Grounds. The room was clean and well presented, with beautifully comfortable beds. Some reviews have talked about street noise and safety - I heard none of the former, and though the number of homeless people is shocking, this seems like a significant issue city-wide. I did not feel unsafe walking alone, late at night, along Market St to the hotel. I anticipate returning to Hotel Whitcomb on my next visit to San Francisco.
Perfectly acceptable hotel with good value in an excellent location”
This hotel has seen its better days but it is a perfectly reasonable place to stay, at the hub of the City. My room was quiet. The bed was okay. The shower was excellent. The overall cleanliness of the room was good (although the hallways could have certainly used a bit more TLC. For the price it was perfectly fine, the hotel rates in San Francisco have gotten crazy. I saw one hotel offering a "special price" of $1,000/night. Are you kidding me?? Another thing to keep in mind is that SF has an awful homeless problem (you can see why!) and the number of visible homeless people seems to grow during each visit to the City. It is very sad to see. I sure hope they come up with some solution to this sad situation.
Can be Great - but Research Before You Go ...”
The Whitcomb is a great option if it suits your needs, but can be disappointing if you have unrealistic expectations. It's a large, old hotel and despite the gorgeous Edwardian era architecture and decor in the common areas, the non-suite guest rooms are a bit spartan. The location is dodgy at best - not outright dangerous, but if you're going to walk around in the vicinity of the hotel be prepared for lots of requests for money, attention, etc. and the occasional bout of screaming. On the other hand, the entrance for BART/MUNI rapid transit is a few steps from the front door of the hotel - use the 8th/Market exit and you can literally see the hotel sign as you come up the elevator. There are bars, restaurants (cross Market Street and walk up Larkin for some good Vietnamese and Thai options) and convenience stores close by and open late. The on-site restautant, while a bit formal-looking from the outside, proved to be a great place for a solo dinner at the bar. For history buffs - do explore the mini museum on the Mezzanine level, devoted to the history of the hotel - which was apparently very glamourous during the 1916-1929 period, after serving temporarily as San Francisco's City Hall in the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake.
frequent traveler”
very good locaion near city hall and hence and use BART system to/from SFO airport. also not far from downtown and China town. aged hotel and hence facility is not that modern but acceptable. may met with interesting people but it is San Francisco so I totally accept it! feel safe to stay in this hotel from my view. super market or shopping stores are not far away.
The Whitcomb is amazing!! ”
First off, the Whitcomb is an absolutely amazing Hotel!! I'd say, it's one of SF's best kept secrets!! It practically has everything you need to make your trip that much more awesome. All of the workers are super friendly and helpful for that matter. It's located in the middle of everything. You can walk to Union Square and Cab it to the Wharf for less than 10 dollars. A bargain for sure!! Not to mention, it's very own bar.... Enjoy this gem!
Interesting historical hotel in a run down neighbourhood ”
Was looking for a hotel for a 1 day layover between flights in SF and found the Hotel Whitcomb. If you like history and early 1900s, this is for you. Lots of original marbles and stained glass. Rooms are small but you get dedicated bathroom with a small shower. Clean, friendly staff, decently priced. The only negative is the neighbourhood where there are a lot of homeless and vagrants around on Market street, at least at night. Wasn’t bothered by anyone though.
Good hotel and value for money”
this was my 3rd time in san francisco and i really had a great time there. the hotel was good and staff were polite. next time when i´m coming to san francisco i´ll be staying at this hotel.
Excellent Location”
Nice old hotel in downtown with BART and MUNI at door step. Nice antique decor , plush beddings with lots of pillows. Starbucks Coffee at front door and many restaurants nearby. Good place to stay in San Francisco. One bad note. front desk personnel not too friendly.
Great hotel dodgy area”
This hotel was beautiful. A historic landmark surrounded by San Francisco’s homeless problem. The rooms were small due to the age of the hotel, but the beds were comfortable. The linens were a little rough but we only paid $135 a night in SF so you can’t complain too much. Everything about the hotel was accommodating, they even have secured parking( for a price). The restaurant was delicious and has a Starbucks right downstairs in the lobby. It location to metro and other public transportation was excellent ( street ads run right down market st. ). Proximity to great restaurants and bars was excellent and it’s placed in a perfect location for travel. Our only complaint was the homeless, not bashing those that are downtrodden but during the day the homeless population wasn’t bad,at night we were hesitant to stay out with our toddler past 8 and the drug use so close to a great hotel was a shame. The security does what they can but it’s a little overwhelming. Overall great hotel.
Relatively clean, good location (for some)”
Needed a place for a couple of nights in the city near downtown with easy access to BART/Muni as I'll be transiting to South Bay (via Caltrain). Whitcomb fits price and location fairly well. The staff was nice and the room was clean (had a unit towards rear of building on third floor, beyond noisy neighbor, room was fairly quiet). Walls may be slightly thin but overall okay. High ceiling can be pro/con depending on your preference. Location is convenient but may be sketchy for out-of-towners that's not used to certain parts of SF. 8th/Market is brightly lit street and unless you're milling about past 2 AM by yourself, you should be fine. Area not for female to walk around by self at odd hours at night, IMO. There's a Starbucks attached to the hotel and a Burger King across the street, along with various other fast food joint in nearby walking distance. Though to be honest with Muni right down the stair outside, many good joints downtown are a few stops away.
anyone who is travelinong to San Francisco need to lower their expectations ”
San Francisco became a blanket city which means homeless occupy the streets and no one is doing anything about it. Location of this hotel is great . It’s close to everything and it is not in any way fault of the hotel what is happening outside if their facility. One note regarding the hotel itself, when I book a hotel, mattress condition is super important to me. In this hotel mattresses have not been updated for a long time so you slide in the middle. I was sharing my bed with my daughter and it was not comfortable. Otherwise it’s clean and it was quite. We asked for extra towels and got them pretty quickly. It makes sense to park at the hotel with valet for 40.00 or else you will have to walk thru the “blanket city” late at night when you park your car somewhere else; you stop caring about saving 10.00 when you see what’s outside. I feel sorry for the local residents, but why are they electing government that does nothing to protect them and only makes situation worse every year.
Great location but small rooms & a tad too old”
it's a nice historical hotel outwardly but the walkway & the elevators are old & feels dingy. since it is old, it is not as comfortable as a new modern hotel & it has a strange smell. what i really like about it is that it is really convenient & easy to take the bart from sfo airport to civic centre at $8.10 and walk to the hotel. for someone who is at san francisco for the 1st time, i could easily find the hotel.
Convenient location; Starbucks adjacent to lobby!”
Booked this hotel through Agouda. Price was good. Good location. Staff was responsive but did take a while to get the rollaway bed and extra towels but it did eventually get to us before we slept. The hotel is older but it seemed to be maintained. It reminds me of a scary movie getting off of the elevator on the floors (mirrored elevator doors, darkish hallways, etc.). The area around (outside) hotel was surprisingly clean and did not smell like urine. Either it's a really good area or SF is finally cleaning up the streets and sidewalks. I wouldn't mind coming back to this hotel. Parking is valet only; entrance is from Stevenson St off of 8th Street. It's $39; not including tax - with tax is $43.32. I can't believe there's tax on parking! I guess it's not so bad since you get to enter and exit whenever you like. Everything costs in SF!
Loved it! ”
What a cool hotel! We found a deal online and it was much nicer than we expected. Only one suggestion - the room was lit only with a couple of lamps, and they had very dim bulbs. It would have been nice to have the option to have a little more light in the room.
Great Deal!”
Market Street in SF is full of homeless and other weird people. Though, that was not a problem all those multiple times I was in SF. The hotel is very stylish. It looks like a lot of efforts are being made to keep it look "old". Personal is responsive and helpful. Rate was great, compared to other deals around.
Classic hotel”
It is overall good for the price in downtown San Francisco.
Pleasure ”
Not a terrible location but fairly rough neighborhood with lots of vagrants. Hotel is beautiful inside, particularly the lobby. Rooms are modest but clean and nicely furnished. Good price.
great location, nice price”
the hotel is in great aera, next to the bus station to the subway and nice dinner acrost the street. 10 min walk from union sqaure. the first room we got was very tiny, with two qoeen beds.(we were 4 people)we asked to change it, and we got a bigger room, which was ok. although the room is clean, you can feel it is old. but overall the hotel was ok.
Gracious Art Dec hotel”
On entering you step back in time; marble colonnades and high ornate ceilings. The rooms are clean and comfortable and staff attentive. A magestic hotel in its day and still retains that air.
Comfortable hotel near subway”
Best convenient hotel. Subway station and bus stop are right in front of the hotel. I found it very convenient to travel to anywhere in SF. The hotel is in old fashion but has very well maintenance. Room is rather small but is clean and cozy. I'd love to stay at this hotel again when I visit SF.
