This is a guest house not a hotel ”
It was painful stay in House of Arts because there was not air condition in the room and humidity was 80% at that time, there was bedbugs, mosquitoes, cockroaches and lizard hence could not sleep whole night. There was no staff except one old french man and his son Ali plus one dog. This was one of my worse stay in any hotel/motel in my life.

Needs serious repairs and updates”
Nice lobby, friendly owner, great location
Very overated. Worst place we stayed in all Sri Lanka and most expensive. Mosquitoe nets covered in blood. Rooms need serious attention. I would not recommend this hotel to any traveler. Its not really a hotel or a bnb. Its anhouse that is falling apart.

Quiet pleasant hideaway”
Location to beach, art collection, quirkiness
Very satisfied with the House of Arts. It's a quirky old building full of interesting ephemera, paintings and furniture. Sammy is a very laid back character and the staff and family who work here very polite and courteous. The rooms are a bit basic but good enough for me for a couple of nights. I had hot water, clean sheets and a good mozzie net. No a/c but that wasn't expected and two fans in the room were enough to keep me cool. Location wise, it's far away from the centre of Colombo, but that's what I wanted. Mount Lavinia beach is unspectacular but just a few minutes walk away and a breezy spot to cool down at the end of the day with a beer. It is a bit difficult to find the place first time round, with only a very faint sign next to an unassuming garage door. After a while though, this adds to the hideaway charm

unique hotel”
Hotel design, near to the beach, price
I stayed one night in this hotel before going to Dubai. I was amazed by the designs and creative concepts of the hotel. The owner was hospitable and kind. The room was quite old and creepy but safe. I enjoyed playing with Bruce - the big dog in the hotel. No special attractions near the hotel. The near beach - it was dirty and not for swimming. You just go to Mt. Lavinia Hotel for swimming and good food.

Mt Lavinia and Samy Pavel”
Samy, breakfast and the decore.
We stayed at The House of Arts for 2 nights when we arrived in Sri Lanka. We decided to stay away from Colombo as we had stayed there before. Although a little way out of the capital it still enabled us to do a days sightseeing. Samy arranged our pick up at the airport and filled us in on were to go and what to see. The staff were very helpful and made us feel very welcome. Although the house has seen better days the rooms are comfortable. I would suggest replacing the mosquito nets as they are sadly in decline. We enjoyed our stay and found the discussions with Samy and his son enjoyable and stimulating. The near by beach has a selection of restaurants and Galle Rd, a walk away, has a supermarket and a variety of typical shops/eateries/banks. As budget accommodation goes this is OK.

The hotels architecture was straight out of the jungle book. The place looked beautiful, we just wished it was a little cleaner and had hot water.

A lovely place to stay close to the city”
Charming decor, charming staff, the ridgback dog called Bruce
The House of Arts was the perfect place to spend the first and last nights of my trip. Close to Colombo, short walk to the beach, plenty of shops and food close by. Our room was clean and comfortable. I loved the style, lots of art and books, and painted flourishes. The big ridgeback named Bruce keeps watch and barks to announce the arrival of visitors, no need to be afraid though he's gentle and eager to make friends. The owners were lovely and very generously allowed me to leave my bag for a few nights so I could travel by bus & train without too much hassle. They also let me check out late on the day I was flying out which was much appreciated.

Super fast check in”
Very friendly owner, beautiful deco, very homey
It was really pleasant. Me and my travel buddy had to leave early to catch the train at Mount Lavinia station and the owner was very apologetic that we're not able to have breakfast as we're leaving too early, but made sure we had some tea before we leave. And the tea was really good! The place is about 10-20mins walk to Mount Lavinia Station.

Unique, relaxing, welcome pot of tea
If you can bear the ceiling fans instead of AC's then it well worth the money spent. Interesting set up and features not found in the brands name hotels.

An unexpected firework of arts!”
The fine and very tasteful decoration of house and garden with artwork, the very sympatic host who is a real sir and a great breakfast
We entered another world - it was just fantastic. If someone is out for art, culture and a high level talks then this is the place to stay! It is not easy to find, but this is also an advantage... ;)

Decor, location, staff
Wonderful place to stay I really had a great time here. Be careful as it's listed as being on beach avenue, but actually it is on beach road. Amazing breakfast. Quiet location, friendly staff. Clean well decorated rooms. Overall my favorite night in he negombo / Colombo area.

the most entertaining and enriching stay. ”
The hosts, the food and the ambiance
oh, i can comfortably say that this was one of the finest hotels i have stayed in during my Sri Lanka trip. The hosts were just amazing, both husband and wife made us very comfortable. As we were from the media background we got along with them like a house on fire ! The ambiance of the rooms was so lovely that i actually took few decor tips from this place and replicated them in my house. The breakfast was really unique and very homely. The place is enriched with art and books on films. Very very tastefully done. Definitely recommended for all movie lovers and lovers of art.
