Pusat Kota Beruwala
Totally misrepresented on the website. Photos make it look like something it isn't at all. It is essentially a bed and breakfast as opposed to a resort or even 3 star hotel. The location is terrible, its in the middle of nowhere with no close shops to even buy essentials. We found ourselves spending our entire trip at another resort to make up for the lack of amenities at ours. There is no restaurant as represented on the site, it is a kitchen in which you have to order two and a half hours before you eat with a limited menu and ridiculous prices. I paid for 4 nights the equivalent of what i would pay to stay in a 4 star hotel beach in Dubai. The free breakfast in the mornings was also terrible, tinned sausages and powdered milk in the coffee. Not at all what you would expect when you're paying that sort of money. The beach was also dirty and crowded, waves were far too dangerous to swim in. No swimming pool, just a cement small pool that looks like an animal's feeding trough. Very disappointed that i chose to stay in this hotel (i use this term loosely as it is definitely more a bed and breakfast) as it looks completely different to the images. Not even free water provided in the rooms each day which for the price i paid would at least expect a complimentary bottle of water. Very disappointed in this and i definitely would not recommend it. There was absolutely nothing to do in the hotel and if we hadnt ventured out to find other things to do, i would have flown home early as the area the 'hotel' is situated in is awful.
Nice but pricey... ”
It was OK. This was supposed to end off our vacation of three weeks of trekking and travelling with two days of peace. And it did. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. They really try to make you comfortable. Everytime I walked towards a hammock and assistant would run out with a cozy hammock mattress and clean sheets. It was very nice. The outdoor shower was very cool too. Now, the food was extremely overpriced and not good, really, at all. The people who work there are very nice and I could have made a big deal about it, because they do really try to make you happy, but fun fact about Sri Lanka, all the food sucks so we just let it go. Just a bit ut off about the price. By the way, not speaking from a western perspective about the food, I am Asian and East Indian....Also,the indoor shower is weak and has no pressure. So you're never really clean. If you get your room cleaned, ask them to not open the windows or turn off the air conditioner. Mosquitos and bugs love the new scents and come in with a vengeance. Overall it was okay.. It's just they charge way too much per night for there not to be dinner included, and the food was not good at all. Oh, and they had coke poured from a large bottle when I ordered a coke with dinnerz and it was flat. That was 300 rupee and I think that took me over the edge about price, quality, and value. However, they are nice as anything, the bed was nice, and the manager drove us to the train in the morning. Oh everyone, take the train to and from. Colombo instead of getting a car. The train view and people are beautiful and interesting. This place was overall okay.
The staffs were extremely friendly and helpful. The ground was very peaceful and well kept. The outdoor bathroom was a good idea until it rained! Going to the toilet on a wet night is not good. Resort was away from other dining places thus most meals were taken in resort which was not cheap.
Relaxing and wonderful nature”
Loved the quietness, after our drive from Colombo.”
Loved our stay in Cocovilla. Sumal and crew were absolutely awesome. The food, atmosphere, attentiveness to our needs were commendable. Our next visit will be for at least 2 weeks at the Coco-villa resort!!!. Sumal and crew keep up the good work.
relaxing with pleasure”
quiet hotel with nice grounds”
This hotel is NOT located in Bentota. If you want to stay in Bentota, do NOT stay at this hotel - which is located to the north, in Beruwala. The landscaping is nice and the hotel is a quiet escape with friendly staff. However, you are not near any sites and must drive to get anywhere. Food and service at the hotel is good, but overpriced and with a small selection. The beach is not good for swimming or surfing and is next to a spot where locals launch their fishing boats. If you want to stay in your hotel all day and relax on a quiet lawn with a book, this is a good hotel for you. If you want to visit Bentota and spend time on the beach, you should stay somewhere else.
Trying hard to be different, yet fails to deliver”
-Our room was not available until 8pm. The owner offered no compensation. -Food is twice (yes, twice) as expensive as the other 4 and 5 star hotels we stayed at. So while you can always get a main for Rs850-950 in all these places (Amaya, Heritance, etc.), this place charges B2,100 and up. There is another restaurant in the area. -Massive, custom-built mattress is a good idea that's poorly executed: mattress is infested with mites, causing a serious allergic reaction in my partner, and bed sheets don't go all the way to the top of the bed, which is hidden by a bunch of pillows, which don't have pillow cases. The whole thing just felt dirty. -We stayed two nights but no one showed up to replace the water bottle or make the bed after the first night. -Again, the massive bathtub is poorly executed, with a drain that doesn't drain and a spigot that spews water outside of the bathtub if you turn on the water too strong. There's also no stopper, so despite the massive bathtub, you can't take a bath. -You'll have to request a hairdryer if you want one. -No gym, no swimming pool This place is trying hard to be different and boutique, but its focus on being "special" has made it overlook the basics: keep your place clean and functional, don't rip people off on the food.
A lovely little hideaway.”
Just wonderful. Will be back but this time for longer.
Overrated hotel, very bad price / quality report”
Very disapointed: for the price we paid we expected a much better hotel: location is very bad (far from any shops restaurants, beach is not clean and you do not want to go swimming), no swimming pool in the hotel. Food is totally abusive: breakfast is served only at 9.00 with a very poor choice and then you can order food but at indecent price (not even iin fivce star hotel you would pay such an expensive pri)
Beautiful hotel with fantastic laid back atmospher”
Really pretty and peaceful with nice beach. The food is a little pricey but fantastic and the service is superb. Rooms are very nice and bathrooms very exciting! Perhaps a bit expensive but is is a small place and is a very relaxing place to stay.
lovely location, very polite and prompt service”
Had an excellent out door relaxation, not much of disturbance from out side world, excellent garden lay out...out door bathroom was an new experience, enjoyed it verymuch
Super relaxing & great view!”
It is a very charming, secluded, relaxing, small and very private hotel. It is super clean and neat. It has a beautifuly manicured palm garden that exits at the beach. The rooms are nice size and very comfortable but the bathroom is the pearl of the treasure. To be able to have a shower watching the stars and listening to the waves in your oun private space was a great experience. Fernando, the owner, will pay personal attention to make anything available and possible. We had a super pleasent and relaxing stay. A bravo for the cook, too! We felt very welcome and at home. We couldn't ask for more!! Curt & Paula
locaion not good the beach sloping, not clean.”
We booked this hotel for 7 nights and stayed 1. The room was large round concrete with a large concrete bed which was clean and well presanted, but not practical. The room had a drift wood coffee table and 2 chairs and old dresser with shelves no where to hang any thing. The bathroom was out side the room open air the owner seem to think this was a good feature, the bath was concrete with a spout for the shower, it look unusual and was totally impractical for us, The room had a strong smell of drying out concrete. The Garden area was laid out with odd seating and you can walk out onto the beach which is not clean. The food was all right but the most expensive we had paid on our 3week stay in Sri Lanca, This hotel is over priced suroundings not good.
A little paradise”
One of our favourite places we stayed! Coco Villa is nicely tucked away, a little haven in Beruwala. Our room was spacious and airy with a lovely bathroom and walk in shower. We liked th attention to detail such as petals arranged on the bed when we arrived, and the lovely spice scent that had been sprayed in the room. We were immediately made to feel at home by Sumal and his family. The garden is lovely with sun loungers, hammocks swinging between the palm trees and four poster beds down by the beach. Great place to relax and laze around. The beach is pretty much private and peaceful with calm waves so good for swimming. The breakfast buffet was delicious with a huge variety of fresh fruit and food to choose from. The dinner menu has quite a lot of choice and we enjoyed Sri Lankan and Western dishes. One evening Sumal provided entertainment in the form of a snake charmer, which was very enjoyable to watch. He speaks very good English and German, running a very professional hotel whilst still making his guests feel at home
Great Place with wonderful service.”
One should give this hotel a try. The place is v.decent and located in a peaceful ambience. The food is also good worth a try. Overall it is recommended for travellers with a medium ranged budget.
stayed for 2 nights at Coco Villa and it immediately offered a lot. Great room, well prepared with flower petals on the bed and a welcome king coconut drink. The manager was helpful and clearly dedicated to his vision of the kind of stay that a Coco Villa traveller would want. Only points are to maybe get the basics right. These incluse shower not providing hot water, in fact not much water at all. Outside bath and shower. The bath would take our 2 day stay to fill up with the trickle of water that came out. Also if there is a tv in the room, it needs a subscription to provide a service, small point in such a beautiful area, but still. Watch the bill as food and drinks are expensive. We sent as much on 2 meals and some drinks at Coco Villa as the previous 10 days accommodation.
Lovely hotel with family atmosphere ”
We had three nights in this resort where we feel at home. It was really relaxing and peaceful.
A precious little hideway, gem of a find!”
very tempted to not write a review because we'd selfishly like to keep this to ourselves, cocovilla is definitely gem of a boutique holiday resort. nestled in the quiet fishing village of beruwala with its friendly people, this is definitely the spot if you want a quiet break with sun, sea and lots of green at your doorstep. beautifully and creatively decorated, with a wonderful team of people, the owner sumar and his right-hand man sampat make sure you are always looked after. service is personal without being overbearing. we start the day with a wonderful healthy breakfast, swim for hours in the sea, dry up on the hammocks/ sun loungers/ outdoor beds on its grounds, have a great home cooked lunch and then another swim while watching the sun slip of the horizon.
A small oasis with a big welcome.”
after a couple of frantic days in colombo and a journey along the coast that involved taxi, train and tuk-tuk, our four night stay at coco villa was a very welcome relief! tucked away from the main tourist beat this is a small, artfully designed and decorated oasis with a big welcome. sumal, his family and staff work hard maintaining the building and its beautiful garden and at keeping the beachfront spotlessly clean and clear of rubbish. locals and a few tourists swim here and it seems quite safe. afterwards, there are loungers, beds and hammocks strung in the shade of palm trees to relax on. if you want a room with 'wow!' factor, the penthouse suite should soon be finished, but our standard room was more than good enough for us. a couple of grumbles: all that is advertised is not available, such as hair dryers, and our television did not work (no real problem for us, but why have the equipment in rooms if it cannot be used?). neither are there a bar and restaurant as such: drinks are brought out to order and there's a nightly buffet or barbecue for all guests served on the veranda. while the food is good and well cooked, it caters for european tastes and is nothing like as spiced as we'd wanted. it was also priced to hotel levels and the food and drinks bill at the end of our stay came as a bit of a shock! that said, we had a great and relaxing break here and would thoroughly recommend it. we'll certainly look at staying again if back this way in future.
