District 3 is quieter than District 1, but it still offers visitors a premium location in the center of Ho Chi Minh City. There are a few sightseeing attractions in the area and several hotels in District 3 that are much more relaxed than their counterparts in District 1. This area also has several foreign-run businesses and embassies.
One of the main sites in District 3 is Chua Xa Loi, a seven-tiered pagoda and active place of worship. This pagoda was especially important during the war with America, as it served as focal point for government opposition. A memorial at the pagoda honors Thic Quang Doc, a monk who famously lit himself on fire here in protest. Another pagoda, Chua Vinh Nghiem, is also in District 3.
Another unique attraction in District 3 is Bao Tang Phu Nu Nam Bo, a museum dedicated to the women of Vietnam. Its exhibits explore the cultural, artistic and historical contributions women have made to the country. A few of the displays are particularly compelling.
Accommodation in District 3 is especially convenient for tourists who are arriving on a late train at the Saigon Railway Station. Local hotels are much easier to get to after hours than those in District 1, and many of the city’s major attractions are within walking distance. Tourists can also enjoy the French-colonial atmosphere in local neighborhoods.
The Ho Chi Minh City Eyes Hospital is also in the district. It has French affiliations and occasionally serves medical tourists. A small percentage of inbound travelers book accommodation in District 3 to recover as outpatients from the hospital.
