“Outstanding stay with lifelong friends”
Sky Gem Ben Thanh was indeed a gem in the midst of Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City. Our stay in the center of District 1 provided an outstanding backdrop for a group of 6o+ year old men rekindling childhood and teenage friendships. Our group of 8 mostly retired men enjoyed the hotel's location and staff. For the price, it was an outstanding value and the location could not have been better situated. Coming from NY to be with friends from Bacolod Philippines required me to adjust to the time and I was awake at 3am which gave me a chance to exercise and see the city (at least to complete 45 mins of brisk walking) before everyone else woke up. For 5 consecutive days, my early morning walk at different times from 330-6AM provided a sense of how HCMC - Ho Chi Minh City, prepares for the day. There were some dogs and cats but it turned out that their owners were around, there were a number of people preparing their Banh Mi carts and other restaurant workers pre-cooking their pho ingredients, and a number of either owners or municipal workers sweeping or keeping their sidewalks clean. Saigon/HCMC was a delight to visit and it might be a great place to live with their outstanding security and safety, lower food costs and more importantly friendly people. During my early morning and day walking adventures with friends, there were probably 2 people who had slept outside in the streets during our 7 day stay - and we did walk the streets everyday, logging about 28-25k steps (our i-watches and galaxy watches kept us honest). Sky Gem had great staff from the porter, front desk and especially the breakfast staff. Nice selection of foods in the morning with an egg station too. It was an outstanding stay indeed. Oh, there were no beggars.. Saigon people are very proud folks and do not take charity lightly. They will sell stuff or offer services but not beg. Yes, they can charge a lot for what they sell and they will test your bargaining skills for sure.
