When using public transportation, you should take the Hakone Tozan cable car from Gora Station because otherwise, it's all uphill from Gora Station. When we were there in April the cable car also stopped running at 7PM, so we had keep that in mind when coming back to the hotel (fortunately, you can take a taxi from Gora station). It's very easy to walk down the hill, but the climb can be challenging. There were 2 private onsens in the building and you can use the onsen at the hotel next door as well. The private onsens were nice! I've read other reviews mention how this place look run down and dirty, and while I don't completely disagree, I think some reviews may have expected too much for what they're paying. Although the building was old, I thought it was still fine and it was still overall clean. The restroom facilities are also shared. The couple running the ryokan were very nice and friendly. Overall, I was very pleased with Hakone Gora Kanon!
It ia a nice and clean traditional Japanese motel; the breakfast was good. The have two private onsens where you can bath as a family or couple.
pros: private onsen for cheap. good amount of space, care for travelers by friendly host. short walk from cable car and gora park. cons: shared washroom with mosquitos. weak wifi. might be difficult to find for foreigners.
Very good experience!”
This ryokan is located in Gora Onsen, which is a 10 bus ride away from the most famous route. But it is not a problem, you will feel so good to be in a very silence, calm, and quiet place. In 20 minutes total you can reach Hakone Shrine, in 10 minutes the famous Yunessun resort. Rooms are spacious. Everything is clean. The owners are kind and can speak English (I could speak Japanese, but I also heard them speak in a pretty fluent English). You have unlimited ice-cream, DVDs rental for the night, and the Onsen (two baths) are private! You just have to get there before other guests and it's completely yours! This is good if you think that for a private onsen you usually have to spend a lot of money. Breakfast was ok. Highly recommended.
Great location not far from Gora station”
Hosts were lovely. We arrived at 3pm as that’s when check in. Room was basic but value for money. We had everything we needed. Apparently a great onsen on site but we ended up going to another local one instead. Nice traditional breakfast served. Also really enjoyed the free popsicles :)
Private onsen is superb”
Private onsen is the most original one during our 4 stays in Hakone/Ito. Location is good. Plan well especially with luggage since there are a lot of up hill roads.
Comfortable space with onsen”
Very comfortable Japanese traditional room, well equipped with TV, fridge, safebox and a balcony overlooking the beautiful hill. Given the amount that we pay, it's great that this place has a private onsen and free unlimited popsicles! The receptionist is very friendly as well. Overall, I will not hesitate to introduce this place to my friends.
The owners was very friendly and polite. They will chat with you when they saw you. Providing information you need. The breakfast was delicious although it is only a few simple dishes. The facilities can be improved.
Very quaint, friendly ”
Breakfast was delicious- Japanese style. Had the balcony room, very spacious. Really liked the futons thought they were very comfy. Peaceful location. Internet not great if that is something you are after. Lovely private Onsen- with everything supplied -shower gels/hair products and dryer supplied for your use.
good location and staff friendly”
Reasonable price with luxury services. If check in late please book advance dinner. All the restaurant is close early.
Fuss Free Ryokan experience at reasonable rate”
Went on a public holiday weekend in Japan & were greeted warmly by the ryokan owner. Love the unlimited sobert ice dessert and coffee/ green tea on the house. Interesting experience having the private onsen to ourselves (though we can only use 1hour per time, it was good enough experience). It was fun setting up our own futon and keeping it the next day morning, the cabinet in our room was faulty with chipped wooden door in the balcony though. They use to have benches in the balcony but they have since removed it...pity. Breakfast was simple but delicious enough, good that rice was refillable. the only setback is convenient store is way more than 10mins walk away (as compared to the map info given by ryokan) ...we followed the map but couldnt find it down & up the steep hill, bum into other tourists & gave up after finding out from them the actual distance of the convenient store. Wanted to order food delivery but owner advice against?? We were left puzzled & hungry.
A lovely stay”
We had the best time here!
Very nice stay”
I travelled with my 3 cousins and we booked for 2 days 1 night with meals included. it was very fun experience. We get quite large room. The only downside that we couldnt eat the meal inside our room.. eventhough we have dining area in our own room. So we have to go the cafe area in the lobby. But, the meal was really delicious, and they provided unlimited ice cream.
Great host/staff. value for money. great location/walkable distance to railway station. private onsen available. we had a chance to experience tatami style bedroom, big balcony with awesome view during daytime. authentic japanese style dishes served for breakfast and dinner with unlimited rice refilled!! the only cons i would say is shared bathroom which is abit inconvenient but it wasnt cause too much problem for 1 night stay. overall everything was nice!!
Great value Ryokan experience! ”
We had an enjoyable stay at Hakone Gora Kanon Ryokan and all wished we had more time to spend there! For the price that you pay, you get a great experience of a traditional Japanese Ryokan - a beautiful and spacious tatami room and a 24hour indoor onsen. We loved having the option of trying a traditional Japanese breakfast during our stay, and really appreciated the complimentary ice blocks in the communal freezer - they were delicious, especially after a hot soak in the onsen. The staff were lovely and polite, and we felt like we had the place to ourselves sometimes. Our room had a large balcony which was great for enjoying the fresh mountain air, and we had a great time exploring the neighbouring streets in our yukata and slippers after dinner. Would highly recommend Hakone Gora Kanon if you're after an authentic local ryokan experience, away from the hustle and bustle of the city!
We were looking forward to 'authentic' Japanese stay...”
...and reviews that prompted us to book this ryokan were pointing to a good experience - but... first and foremost, (and I undertand it's our own experience only) this ryokan is challenging to reach. Cablecar ride (two stops from train station), 10 min walk from cablecar stop, and 5 min out of them uphill walk - please do not bring any luggage -- you will be sorry... Overall feel - outdated but clean property, friendly host, and we needed to make our own beds - ok, that was fun and provided unforgetable photos, still I wouldn't say that was the best choice for what we hoped for (and two different ryokans later proved this point)
Very nice but just one bathroom”
While the Ryokan is beautiful (and how nice to get a large tatami room these days!) the single bathroom shared with all residents is difficult. Perhaps needing to designate female and male times, or (although it might be difficult structurally) create segregated baths for guests use. I noted that there were two "bath in use" signs, but just the one actual bathroom - wondering why?
This ryokan provides adequate amenities. Free ice-lollies are available 24/7 which is a nice treat for those sweet-tooth. Bathrooms are for private use on first-come first-served basis which can be quite a problem during peak times such as evening and morning. The quality of the bath is below average and looks quite dirty. Paying a bit more will get you much better experience elsewhere.
