Everything is perfect! Will come again!
Ryokan Sawaya Honten was great, especially for first timers to Japan”
My fiancee and I decided to go to Japan and Kyoto was obviously a city to check out. We wanted to see what a "traditional" japanese living is like, and I think we both came out very satisfied. The room was spacious and clean, the bathroom was spacious and clean, and the staff were super friendly. They knew english pretty well, and we communicated pretty well. I don't know any Japanese, so the whole conversation was in english. The breakfast was a little expensive but had a lot of variation and was filling. Overall, I would definitely book there again.
A special experience in Kyoto! Stayed four nights with my 17 yo Son and the ryokan was one of his favourite things. We were very comfortable here, enjoyed sleeping on tatami and wearing our yukata. Our room had a private bath. Location is not in the main tourist area, but fine for us because we don’t mind walking and it was nice and quiet. The Japanese breakfast served here is worth a try (not included in room price).
Comfortable, Friendly Ryokan in Kyoto”
We found Sawaya Honten to be extremely comfortable. The public bath was very nice, and the rooms were clean, spacious, and comfortable. And the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, spoke English well, and was always able to help us find what we needed. They even provided a way to catch up on our laundry while we stayed. Sawaya Honten was our favorite place that we stayed in our trip to Japan, out of 4 different cities and hotels that we stayed in.
Awesome (even if the bed was uncomfortable! Worth the experience!! ”
I cannot sing this Ryokans praises more highly! (Apart from the bed which I knew was likely) well located short walk to train/subway! Surrounded by attractions and places of interest! Onsen was wonderful and relaxing! The staff always friendly and helpful! We were even able to wash some clothes free of charge on a washer/dryer!!! The fridge though located outside was easy to access and included a shared though secluded garden and pond, very peaceful!!
Big room and good location ”
Nice traditional hotel
Very Friendly staff ”
It was such a nice spot, after a number of tiny hotel rooms it was such a breath of fresh air! So much space
Nice Ryokan in central Kyoto”
This was a nice Ryokan in central Kyoto. It is convenient to several bus lines and a train station for getting around. The immediate neighborhood doesn't have anything to see, but you can walk to the Imperial palace or even the temples of eastern Kyoto if you don't mind longer walks. Besides the en suite facilities, the Ryokan has a traditional shared bath (men and women separate), which we had to ourselves. They provided a tea and coffee setup in our room every night along with a little snack. There is internet via the the Kyoto municipal wifi system, which worked fine for us. The proprietor was very nice and helpful and spoke enough English for us to communicate with.
wonderful stay in Ryokan Sawaya Honten”
We loved this Ryokan! Very peaceful location and only ten minutes walk from Gion. The room is just perfect with plenty of space to move around...in Japan is a real bonus! The owners are gentle and graceful...I would love to go back in Kyoto and I would stay again in Sawaya Honten.
Our excellent stay!”
Great stay at this ryokan!
Very friendly staff! I loved the atmosphere of this traditional Ryokan. Location is quite good: close to public transport and in quiet neighborhood. All in all very satisfied and would highly recommend this place to anyone.
It was a great experience.
Was surprised by its decent large space seeing this is Japan! Strategic good location with short walking distance to subway and bus station which can bring you to all the main attractions in Kyoto. The ryokan owner spoken decent English and helpful in guiding how to get to each location precisely.
Kind and helpful”
Lovely place. Extremely clean with 5 star service delivered with kindness.
Nice modern ryokan”
Quiet, beautiful, clean, big room, nice common bath where I was everytime all by myself. Easy to find, station and a good busstop are quite near. Lots of cafes, small restaurants and groceries nearby. Very polite staff, owner speaks good English if needed. Would stay again.
Great onsen, nice staff, clean and comfortable”
Nice mix of traditional and modern facilities. Buses close by. Not super close to the centre of town but walkable if you like walking. Friendly staff.
Lovely traditional place”
If you are looking for the traditional Japanese experience this is a great place to stay. Kind and helpful staff with reasonable English, spotlessly clean and lots of beautiful details. Rooms are very big. The location is convenient both for Kyoto University, and for downtown Kyoto (2 stops on the metro or a 25 minute walk by the river). I stayed 5 nights in connection with visiting Kyoto University which is a 10 minute walk away. If staying in winter please note that the bathrooms are not heated. This is easy to get used to but perhaps not exactly what you want when you climb off a long-haul flight. Same goes for the bed, which is traditional mattress rolled out on the floor - it's ok but not the most comfy thing to sleep on if you are used to a Western bed and need to sleep off your jet-lag. Also - which is mainly a problem for business travellers - the wifi is unstable from the rooms, though fine from the computers in the lobby. Bottom line, if you want to experience a traditional hotel this is a great choice. If you are looking for comfort above all else then probably best to go for a modern hotel.
A comfortable and clean hotel”
We love the hotel because when we lived there, there are not much customers and so we can enjoy the public bath alone without share with others. The cleanliness is excellent and the environment is quiet from traffic
Exceptional modern ryokan - great value”
We LOVED our stay here. One of the few ryokans with private bathrooms (something we needed). More modern than traditional but still a great experience. Very friendly, lovely, wonderful staff.
Nice traditional Japanese stay and friendly staff”
Very nice traditional Japanese stay, everything is good except the location is not the most centralised, but it's not too bad as it's close to many major tourist buses. Our stay doesn't include meals so I can comment on this.
