Fantastic hotel. Excellent facilities and customer service. Unfortunately during our stay, the hotel was hosting a private event with very loud 'nightclub' type music continuing late into the evening. Therefore depending on your room location, it can be very annoying.
This is a great resort to stay with toddlers or young kids, the best we have found in Sri Lanka so far. The swimming pools are great and very children/toddler friendly. The water slides are awesome for the kids. The food in the resort is pretty good and there's quite a variety of food available. I wouldn't say it tastes the best compared to some other hotels in the country, but still it's pretty good. There were also some peacocks walking around in the hotel garden, so it's nice for kids to look at. You could likely also do a Yala park safari from here, it's just about an hour drive. Don't know if there's anything else around in this area, but if you travel with kids around the country it would be good to stay here for at least 2 nights as 1 night would be too short to enjoy the facilities in the resort.
This hotel is not worth going all the way to Hambantota for. The staff were unfriendly and the hotel is very dated. We have travelled to many hotels in Sri Lanka since we have visited the country three times and this was our least favourite spot. The rooms and amenities were on the expensive side and was not worth it, were even surprised this was part of the Shangri-La chain.
Honeymoon stay as part of our Sri Lanka tour”
This is a very up market hotel that we chose as part of our honeymoon. It was after 8 days of travelling around the country to just enjoy 4 nights of relaxing and the facilities. The hotel is beautiful and is a 5 star resort in that respect. Was clean and food was very tasty in their 4 restaurants. The staff were amazing. Always friendly and helpful. It served its purpose as a hotel to relax before we continued our travels. I would say that it is very expensive compared to the rest of the country and other glorious hotels we stayed at. It’s location isn’t ideal for trips out, which that wasn’t our aim but to be noted. The beach is beautiful but cannot swim in the sea as dangerous as is many places along the south. The golf was fantastic but the sport and recreation let it down due to poor equipment and lack of guest uptake, which was one of the reasons for picking this hotel. I did raise this with their management who have said they are looking into improving this.
This is a 5 star hotel- at the very least there ought to be a refreshing drink on arrival, somebody to show a family to their room and better communication from the staff. I felt the food I ate in other hotels in Sri Lanka was of better quality and a fraction of the price compared to the Shangri-La. This was also an issue with drinks etc. where prices were comparable with the most expensive in the world. On the upside the amenities for children were fantastic. The golf course was well above average, even if some of the holes were out of commission due to ongoing works. As a value for money concept I believe the hotel scored low as evidenced by the 2 stars I have given above- Shangri-La you can do better!!!!!!
very nice with wonderful amenities. unfortunately we were quite disappointed by the food. You have no restaurant in the close neighborhood so you end to choose one of the restaurant of the hotel. You have basically two bars offering basic food (not tasty and not well prepared (bones in sandwiches)), one restaurant pretending to be upper scale (horrible food, worst food in Sri lanka in 2 weeks , no taste, very basic, no presentation). so in the end you have no other choice for decent food than the last restaurant which is a buffet. In several restaurants we had rude staff, each time it was when we came after 8:30pm (restaurant are supposedly closing 10 or 11.)
Fabulous pool for small kids but quite isolated ”
Staff were amazing. So friendly and always helpful. The kids pool is amazing and our kids spent hours on the slides. The beach however is way too rough to swim in which is a little disappointing. The breakfast was amazing and the food pretty reasonably priced. The ShangriLa itself is quite isolated which is good and bad. There were almost no tourists in the local towns so it felt authentic. However the trek to get to the resort is a VERY long one if coming from Colombo. Overall a good experience but next time we will probably stay a bit closer to the airport.

No Action on Complaints ”
We checked in late in the evening for overnight stay and realized toilet exhaust fan was not working around 10am just couple of hours before the check out. It was a terrible experience as the whole room was impacted. Made a complaint at the checkout. Clerk answer was “this kind of small things could happen”. I demanded a supervisor and she promised to write to me after referring my matter to her manager. To date I haven’t heard anything. Attitude of the staff was appalling.

We were allocated the wrong room even though I had a printed reservation. The management were completely useless about keeping us happy. They kept on saying it was not their fault even though we had printed documents. We mostly felt as if we were ignored by staff at we were not 'white'. This is an awful thing to say in this day and age but it was true. Until I complained and then the management team intervened. But still the experience was dreadful. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. It is in the middle of nowhere. Even though we had a driver and guide. There were only two places we could go to on the four night stay and the hotel's food and beverages are overpriced.

The cost is not in line with service by staff, and the remoteness disallows eating out of the confined area. Not enough staff and those there need better training.

We are a Swiss family of 5 currently living in India and wanted to enjoy a break-out to recover. We were very positively surprised about the Shangri-La Hambantota Golf Resort in all aspects. We enjoyed a lot the great infrastructure of the resort in combination with the wide range of activities as well as the many opportunities nearby such as safaris or turtles watching live at the beach. Our holidays were made very special by the hotel team from the day of arrival at the Colombo airport until the departure. The service quality was outstanding. Also, we enjoyed Sri Lanka as a holiday destination. A very special thank you goes to the crew of the flying trapeze. They teached us knee-hangs, flip backs and knee drops, which all our family members from 3 to above 40 years old enjoyed greatly. Also a huge compliment to the kids club crew. The hotel has a very professional manager who took excellently care of us and stayed in contact through out our stay and beyond.
Wonderful family holiday destination ”
Our whole family stayed there during Christmas. Everyone found the stay equally pleasurable and memorable. It was hard task to get my four year old out because he enjoyed so.. much, so were my teenage nephews and nieces. It’s the place to enjoy a holiday with kids.
Excellent location but not well maintained ”
Excellent location and facilities. Rooms not as lush or as well maintained as other Shangri-La properties. Paint off walls, broken items in room, staff would not approach if by the pool to provide service unless you ask. Great hotel but not yet five star service. I’m sure they’ll get there.

Perfect place to relax”
We were there when the hotel was at full capacity but the place is big enough that you can still get a lot of privacy. The rooms are stunning, the food is very good, and the staff is great but the pools can get overcrowded (with kids especially). The spa was a little disappointing... the space is beautiful and the staff very attentionate but the treatments themselves are not exceptional. Particularly disappointing is the spa pedicure which is quite expensive and has nothing spa about it. It's a plain pedicure that takes an hour long with no extra perk. The deep tissue massage was good.
