lovely hotel, awesome service, great stay.”
we stayed at japamala for a night to rest and relex after our dive course which we took up at salang bay. we had to call the resort to get them to pick us up at genting jetty which cost 60rm one way for two pax. the ferry from salang to genting costed us another 50rm per pax. when we got off the ferry however, the japamala boat was waiting for us as promised. basically the ferry service does not go to japamala as such we had to ask the resort to arrange for their boat to pick us up at genting jetty. alternatively if you have money to spare, they also can send their boats to any of the 6 jetties on tioman island at a cost, genting jetty being the closest and cheapest. the service there was excellent and professional. when we got off at the jetty, we were greeted by friendly and warm service staff who carried our luggage to our rooms. we had a welcome drink and towel to freshen ourselves up at the check in counter before one of the service staff accompanied us our room, the hillside sarang, while introducing us to the two restaurants and the services/amenities available at the resort(spa, dvd selection, reading lounge etc). our room was also prepared in advance for us. they had the lights and air conditioning turned on and also had aroma therapy set up in the room based on the scent we chose when we first checked in at the counter. the bed was decorated with rose petals in a heart shape & everything was perfect. the room itself is totally private and rustic, perfect for couples. dinner was sumptuous and the recommendation given by the staff was excellent as the dishes complimented each other perfectly. retreating back to our rooms, we were pleasantly surprised with two chocolates placed on our bed that was prepared and cleared of roses. they had also refilled the aromatic oil. i personally had a excellent experience with this resort with its amenities and excellent service and highly recommend it to any couples who wants to spend quality personal time together.
Best of Malaysia”
we just came back from japamala today and felt i should write something for this service orientated place. the trip started when i was looking for a place for my wife and i before having a baby. originally i was looking at berjaya resort but after my friend told me about japamala, i went and did my research. the reviews are exactly how the place is like. friendly staffs, excellent food, ideal place for serenity and well priced (probably not that great for locals). we took a coach from singapore to mersing and transfer to the blue water ferry which was recommended by a lot of people. the trip there was kind of hassle free but the ferry took nearly an hour just to get itself out of the mersing jetty. upon our arrival at genting jetty, the speedboat of japamala is already waiting for us and the overall trip was pleasant. when we reach japamala, we were greeted by the friendly staff and were shown to our rooms. i swear they must be one of the best hospitality staffs i’ve met. we were shown to our room and its exactly how it looks on the photos online. even though we didn’t get room 16 (seacliff), all the seacliff chalets have a good view of the jetty and sunset. we only eat at the jetty as my wife doesn’t like thai food that much. i am very impressed with the quality and price of food there. pizza is a must try there and so are the king prawns. meals there are around 60rm per person (including drink) if anyone is budgeting for the trip. snorkling is great and make sure you venture below the jetty and the opposite site of the resort to see what the whole area. i see fishes that i don’t see in front of the resort below the jetty and also on the opposite side. some long fish that swim on the surface of the sea, puffer fish and turtle are some i saw on the other side. overall we had a pleasant stay and definitely will recommend to everyone!
Unique blend of nature, architecture and service”
My words won't do this place justice, it simply needs to be experienced. But I'll do my best. Arriving at the airport at Tekek, Belle and the "bellman" (the skipper) was waiting to kick start our Japamala experience. They took our bags at once, we where told to relax. Belle immediately made us feel appreciated with her hospitality and interest in us. In Japamalas private boat, with a local ice tea, we waved goodbye to Tekek, and the busload of Berjaya Resort guests. We felt special. Arriving at the pier restaurant, Mandi-Mandi, and walking down the pier, we realized we had hit the jackpot. After Belle had given us a tour of the resort, we where guided to our Chalet. The Treetop Chalet, the most affordable of 12 our 13 "rooms" at the resort. Non the less, it where filled with unique details and amenities which instantly made us overwhelmed by satisfaction. It was secluded in its location among trees and rocks, and the wooden pathway to get there may easily be confused with "a stairway to heaven". Showering while watching monkeys play in the jungle, was one of many pleasant experiences I had in this nest. The two restaurants at the resort had a great atmosphere. Lots of nature, living lite candles and a service so friendly and attentive unlike any place else. The breakfast was by far the best breakfast I had while in Malaysia. With freshly made juice, lassies, coffee drinks and eggs. A charcoal grill for our toast was a brilliant touch like many others in Japamala. They went out of there way to please us with service where ever we wanted. Just tell them where you'd like to eat, and they would set up a table. If its the beach, at the beach pavilion, the room, or my favourite; "the secret cave". We had a 7 course dinner in a cave watching the sun set, hearing the waves washing ashore a few feet away, and later on enjoying natures fireworks with lightning illuminating the dark horizon. Continues in tips section...
This was our first trip to Tioman so didnt know what to expect & Japamala went beyond our expectations. We fell in love with it. Will definitely go again. All the rooms are designed in such a way that they give a secluded feel. Its a perfect honeymoon location (we regretted not coming here for ours!). Island is think forest with amazing beaches. Good for snorkling & diving. Japamala is by far the best place to stay in Tioman. If you want to relax without distractions & this is the right place. Cant take kids here tho as not much for them to do. All rooms have dvd players & reception has huge dvd collection to chose from (free of cost). It is slightly on the expensive side but its well worth it.
Superb in short! This is actually the 2nd time my husband and myself visited Japamala, basically we love everything about the resort, the nice and friendly staffs, especially the resident manager - Aruni. The resort contains only 13 rooms in total, therefore it's very private and not packed at all as compared to the other resorts in Tioman Island. We love to hangout at the Italian restaurant which is located above water and the sunset view over there is just amazing. Rooms are very clean and filled with whatever necessities. Perfect for couples or small family who wants to have a quiet romantic and relaxing getaway.
A little slice of paradise”
We actually got upgraded to a Jungle Luxe Sarang as the Tree Top was being repaired. That said, it wouldn't have made too much a difference--Japamala is a little slice of isolation for those who need to recharge from the daily grind. Let's first be clear -- on the grounds themselves, there really isn't anything to do but eat and hang out at the beach area, or hang out in your room. Those looking for activities, they are available for a price, but we chose to sit on our butts for 5 days. Also, let's also be clear -- you are isolated (can only get to Japamala via boat transport), and you're in nature. Nature = Insects. I'm not saying the accomodations aren't nice, but when you're this directly close to nature, there is only so much you can do to avoid ants and such. That said, because we were so much in nature, you could easily see monkeys just hanging outside you window every day, or monitor lizards (like 5-6 ft long ones) walking by behind your bathroom. Food-wise, we thought it was ok. We thought breakfast was the best meal, but a lot of people seem to like the food overall. Ask for less salt, and the food is pretty decent. In short, if you are expecting a super ritzy resort with activities, this isn't it. But if you're expecting a very nice resort that's about as accommodating as possible given how well it is integrated into nature, this is your place.
Beautiful Resort - perfect for honeymooners”
After a hectic few weeks of wedding events, we hoped that Japamala would be the perfect place for us to relax and re-energize. The resort did not disappoint. As many of the other reviewers have mentioned, Japamala is perfect only for couples who wish to retreat and spend quality time together doing nothing at all. There is no chance for interaction with other guests but as we were there on our honeymoon, it was a welcome treat. The resort staff was super friendly and always there to assist when needed. The cleaning staff was super stealth as every time we left our chalet, they snuck in and cleaned the place up. The resort really goes the extra mile to make sure that they add small touches to make visitors feel extra-special. Breakfast was delicious and had a great variety. The food at both restaurants was delicious. There were a few cons though:the resort was quite pricey, the beds were a bit too hard for our liking, and the beach is filled with coral/rocks so the swimming isn't as comfortable as it could be (in other words, don't expect white sandy beaches). However, the view, the service, and the peace and quiet made our overall stay very enjoyable.
Great resort with private beach, natural.”
We stayed at japamala for 3 days 2 nights. We chose seaview sarang for our second night. Aruni, the manager walked us to our Sarang. The moment Aruni opened the door we had to agree the Sarang worth all! It was super hugeee, about triple size of their smallest villa and very secluded to offer us utmost privacy. Thanks for the staff thoughtful, they had already prepared extra 2 beds for our kids. From info we read, very minimal trees being chopped during construction of this resort and to not disturb the natural landscape, you’ll find each and every villa is rather designed to fit their original location. One obvious example seen in our Sarang, the big rock was not moved but instead made a nice, natural hide for our small plunge pool :), the rock pool, hot hot small jacuzzi pond.. During the last night we were at japamala, our 2 kids were in sad mood.. and telling us that they wish to come back again soon. They can't even bear to leave here. Hahaha.. my cute boy told us, he wished to get photo with aruni, other staff too so that if next time he comes back here, he could remember their face. Thanks Jon, aruni, and other staff whom I dont know their name. Thanks for your thoughtful and wonderful day we had spend in japamala. See you next year
Tioman's best secret resort~”
We took a very early morning trip from mersing jetty to genting village at around 6.30am. Reach genting village at about 8.30am, we didnt need to wait long and japamala speedboat arrived. Finally reached Japamala’s very own jetty, the water beneath so clear that we could see colorful fishes swimming and even live coral. The jetty also serves as one of their dining place, Mandi Mandi Restaurant where you can dine under the sky, or better, stars if you’re lucky! we then brought to reception area with built as a glass house. We were served lemongrass welcome drink. We only had 3 days 2 night at here. First night, we stayed at tree top chalet, with no#13, i think thats the best room with best view for tree top chalet, thanks Aruni for the arrangement. WE love mandi mandi restaurant, and met a very nice friendly staff , Jon, who is from Myanmar. The staff there are very thoughtful, and even gave my 2 kids a beach play set and ball,to my 2 kids when they had nothing to play at the beach. We met nice family who are from itali too, they will have a conference at singapore soon. Very amazing that they took 3 weeks to travel all around Malaysia before they reach japamala. Second night, we moved to seaview sarang which apparently the one and only there and the most lavish villa they have for couple..
Villa Samadhi (not Japamala Resort)”
Unfortunately we weren't able to get to Japamala because of the moonson season. Since our planning was going to get there taking the ferry on mersing and the ferry didn't travel that day because of the heavy rain, wind and big waves, we just went to other Hotel from the same group in KL, called Villa Samadhi. We're completely delighted w/ this small paradise in the big city. Besides the great property Villa Samadhi is, the service was quite amazing. The resident manager Cherry (and also her staff) off course were great to us at all times. We're very pleased to be there.
The beautiful bounty of Japamala Resort”
The beautiful bounty of Japamala Resort... Fantastic Staff. They were so efficient, the rooms are awesome and the views were quite spectacular. Being 'secreted' away from the rest of the island inhabitants was great. The amazing cakes, chocolates and incence brought to our rooms was fantastic. The butterflies, stick insect and green lizard, turtle , corals, parrot fish and sting rays litterally at the beaches edge - paradise found! unfortunetly the food was a downer. The food lacked local flavours. Only two restaraunts and one of these offered pasta and pizza - go figure? We paid close attention to the other menues but constantly flicked through to find ourselves flicking for more than 15mins. And where was the spice of the area?
Great staff and great memories”
unique accomodation in a beautiful setting. we arrived at tioman by plane, and japamala staff were there to greet us and take us the ~15min by boat to the hotel. (this is at a cost of rm 160 per person, round trip). we arrived earlier then check-in, but they were very accomodating and we were very comfortable while we "waited" (ie; relaxed) while one was made available. the food was very good (two restaurants) and the pricing was reasonable; especially for the quality. breakfasts (included) were of good quality and good variety. the staff went out of their way for us - they were a highlight of this trip. highly recommend this location.
We had great pleasure staying at Japamala although it was monsoon season. The view is simply breathtaking..the staff are amazing..they really pay attention to every little details to make ur stay a pleasant ones..the food is delicious..a lil bit pricey but it suits the quality of the food served..the room is superb..extremely cozy..the housekeeping staff ensure that the room is tidy..smelling great at all times..the candles are lit..cold drinking water is replenish..The staff..James, Ayuni, Mike, Zamani and Sam were ever so helpful and friendly..we felt we were at home.. When we first arrive in our Jungle Luxe Sarang..we were welcomed by a fruit basket and coconut lengkong..the lengkong is simply delicious so we thought of ordering it from the menu on the next day..but James told us that the kueh is not avaiable in the menu..to our surprise..the next day..someone knocks on our door and delivered our coconut lengkong!!! Tq James!! U r awesome!! We have enjoyed our stay at Japamala and hope to go there again...a great resort if u r looking for tranquility and total relaxation..
captivating scenery & impeccable service”
i would definitely recommend japamala resort to anyone who would like a secluded resort for some peace and quiet! it is an amazing escape from the hustle of life in general, and the staff are so helpful and accomodating. the rooms are set out very well so they blend into the natural surroundings and therefore offer extreme privacy. the resort is only accessible by boat, or by a 45 min trek through the rainforest from the nearest village, therefore if you're seeking a retreat from the rest of the world, this is surely it! in fact, i enjoyed my short stay there so much, that i would like to book a longer holiday in the future!
Lovely hotel and service with a smile”
We arrived there in mon-season, it was not as bad as someone described. On the contrary, the sea was still clear, the weather was neither too hot nor too cold, and the unique advantage was the extreme tranquility. The service there was more than perfect, everyone there were smiling. They provide a list of water sports including kayaking, snorkeling, etc for free. The food is great, there are all kinds of food that people from all over the could find their own preferred dishes. The place is very peaceful, you can enjoy the sea view just in front of your room. And you will find the mountain behind your room is green and fresh. Overall, if you plan to visit Tioman, Japamala would definitely be one of the resorts you want to consider.
One of the few last paradises left”
This resort is truly one of the few untouched paradises left. Rustic and untainted, it really brings you back to nature. JapaMala only has 13 villas so it can provide very personal and attentive service to every guest. Once you arrive, the Resident Manager will escort you to your villa where it is already pre-cooled and jazz music filled. No check-in is required nor signature requested after each restaurant meal as they know every guest by face. Even for the beach cabana drinks ordered, they will know which villa you're from before you tell them. As this is a private beach/part of Tioman, the only way to get there is via their sea taxi and a 2-way transfer for 2 will set you back
Great Weekend getaway”
We went just into the off season (late November) so much of Tioman island was shutdown but the small resort was great and we enjoyed good food, good weather, friendly staff, and the quiet peaceful location. We flew into Tioman and were promptly met at airport and taken by boat to the resort (~15 minutes). Room was ready for us even though we arrived 2 hours before official check in time. The 2 restaurants were good and was there good snorkeling directly off the beach and boat jetty. The only issue was a power outage on the last night and in some ways that made it more romantic, with lots of extra candels. Plus on checkout the resort gave us complimentary round trip boat pick up to the airport as compensation (it was not hotel problem as teh surrounding area lost power also).
it's not a place, it's a state of mind!!!”
i had a 3D2N stay @ Japamala Resort, it's such a wonderful place, it's so relaxing there, just like what the hotel slogan said "it's not a place, it's a state of mind". There's only 13 resorts on the island,so mot much tourists there, the beach is like belongs to us.we don't have to worried about our belongings when we were snorkelling. And the staffs there are friendly and helpful. they do the housekeeping at least twice a day!!!i truly fall in love with the sun, the beach, the sea.................
JapaMala Resort - Tioman Island, Malaysia”
Japamala resorts made our honeymoon a great pleasure. We enjoyed the lovely weather, our Sea View Chalet, the Spa, the staff, the (big!)animals, kayaking, the boattrips, and the whole attitude of the resort! We were lucky with all the sun and loved the swimming and snorkeling. Japamala is very relaxing! We totally forgot time and date, the only choice we had to make was where to eat Thai or Mandi-Mandi (both very good!) or where to relax - the swimming pool or one of the long and unoccupied beaches. Excellent resort with a very friendly and personal staff. They inform every guest personally about everything. Great place!
FANTASTIC STAFF & SERVICE”
We stayed at Japamala Resort end of Dec to early Jan 2017. It was fantastic, firstly the staff were amazing, so friendly and gave us superb service. Definitely recommend to stay at PENGHULU HOUSE or SEAVIEW SARANG room. The food was awesome, so fresh and tasty. Loved the free cocktails on the jetty 6pm - 7pm The resort is very clean and well maintained. On our last morning went snorkelling from the jetty, early before breakfast. Water was flat calm and no one else around, I finally got to see the reef shark - Magical moment. The snorkelling is great off the jetty - there is 1 coral with just Clown fish.
