Japamala Resort by Samadhi is Tioman Island’s only boutique resort and one of the three Samadhi Retreat properties in Malaysia. This small and exclusive resort of 13 rooms is hidden amidst 11 acres of lush tropical rainforest, where charming Malay, village-styled villas and chalets are positioned in the most breathtaking spots.
Best described as an eco-luxe resort, Japamala Resort by Samadhi transcends the experience of living close to nature by redefining it with a touch of luxury. Designed by natural streams, steep cliffs, towering boulders, and where no trees are fell, the entire resort borrows from nature its elements to offer an exceptional sense of paradise and freedom from the real world.

Not as good as expected”
Japamala is a high end place for mostly couples who do not like too much activities such as swimming/snorkeling/diving. Japamala is a quiet place where people sit around on lounge chairs all day long, reading or watching the ocean. The bungalows are large, beautiful but have issue. The A/C was not strong enough to cool up a large wooden unit. The A/C got overheated often (after running for close to 1 hour) and turned off automatically. Once the A/C power got low or turned off, it needed to be turned on again. As the bungalows are in wood, the A/C did not make the room very cool. In order to cool off the bungalow with low A/C, all window coverings needed to be close to prevent the sun to come in, making the room very dark. Paying a high price for the accommodation, I felt going on a tiptoe to make the A/C running. It was a terrible feeling for the guest to accommodate the room and not the other way around the room to accommodate the guest.
Slight improvements needed”
Very good overall, however the resort does not quite reflect the cost. Slight improvements are needed and attention to detail must be enforced. We really like the food and the hard working and friendly staff but we also noted overworked staff not fully engaged with guests. We believe management needs to consider extra staff during the breakfast time and around the beach cabanas as it felt like were not properly looked after. This would be in a 2 or 3 start resort but a 5 start resort should exceed a customer expectations and go the extra mile. Additionally, we felt like the boat transfer from the nearby Genting village to the hotel should be free of charge as boat is the only reliable a d easy accessible method of transport to the resort. We will be back
Simply sont waste your time here”
This resort claims they are 5 star. They have no stable electric facility and no internet. Be prepared for blackouts and suffer in the pitch darkness for many hours. They do not even have a back up generator Dont bother to stay here i do not want to write much as i am frustrated i spend $1500 for 2 night for this trash of a place. Please skip this resort there are much better resorts in tioman way cheaper and more reliable
Amazing location with luxury elements and amazing staff ”
This was my second visit at this resort. Everybody is just amazing, especially Aruni the manager and Rashid from Bangladesh in housekeeping. So friendly, helpful and always smiling. He really brings everything you need for a company like this!! Food amazing, drinks tasty and the sea cliff chalet is super beautiful. Nice clean Beach, will definetly come back again. Greetings from Germany!
Beautiful resort, helpful and friendly staff ”
The resort is an eco resort and is quite luxurious. We had originally booked a sea cliff room but got a jungle sarang instead. The issue seemed to have been on the Agoda platform as the resort had gotten the booking in the system as jungle sarang. As the resort was full and the jungle sarang was a bigger room, we had no choice but to accept it. The staff at the resort was apologetic and nice about it and are also trying to find out what happened to the booking. Other than that. We enjoyed the experience. The beach was clean with crystal clear water. We saw great corals, fishes, stingray, even a turtle while snorkeling. The room we had was very nice, it had a living area, a balcony, a huge bathroom and a large bedroom. It was a giant tree house and was quite an experience. They made quite an effort for the food and it was rather enjoyable. But the whole fish at market price was not worth it as it did not taste fresh and was pricey.
All staffs are commendable for their warmth and friendliness right from the ones that is responsible fetching to and fro with the speedboat. Hats off them being a superb multitasking in different scope. I see passion and teamwork that keeps them going. That makes our stay even worth in that tranquil location. Thank You!
Perfect place to hang out with family.”
If the flight service is available...would give perfect 10 to the vacation at Japamala...however travelling by speedboat from Mersing is not that bad either....only 4 and half hour travel by road from KL to Mersing a bit of a challenge. Once you arrive...you forget about the journey...only the destination. Memorable....unforgettable.
Heaven on Earth!”
It was excellent, the team that is behind the resort provide us with excellent services. From knowing each name personally, customizing food and entertainment according to our preferences. Due to the absence of telco signal on the island, you will enjoy the serenity and seclusion that is provided by the island. It is the place to be if you need to disconnect from the world just to be with your significant other. Kudos once again to the team, I would certainly come back to the resort if given the chance.
We had great pleasure staying at Japamala although it was monsoon season. The view is simply breathtaking..the staff are amazing..they really pay attention to every little details to make ur stay a pleasant ones..the food is delicious..a lil bit pricey but it suits the quality of the food served..the room is superb..extremely cozy..the housekeeping staff ensure that the room is tidy..smelling great at all times..the candles are lit..cold drinking water is replenish..The staff..James, Ayuni, Mike, Zamani and Sam were ever so helpful and friendly..we felt we were at home.. When we first arrive in our Jungle Luxe Sarang..we were welcomed by a fruit basket and coconut lengkong..the lengkong is simply delicious so we thought of ordering it from the menu on the next day..but James told us that the kueh is not avaiable in the menu..to our surprise..the next day..someone knocks on our door and delivered our coconut lengkong!!! Tq James!! U r awesome!! We have enjoyed our stay at Japamala and hope to go there again...a great resort if u r looking for tranquility and total relaxation..
Excellent, but need to know what to expect”
Overall this has been a great stay. Service is excellent - Aruni, Mike, and all the staff have been extremely accommodating of every request possible. Very courteous and friendly but not overly overdoing it. I think the service is overall the part that made this stay very comfortable and smooth. Room is good - The sea view Sarang is large, naturally built. The room is made from wood and in some area in need of renovating and repair. There is an outdoor tub connecting to the room and a large balcony with another dip pool with waterfall. The area has a few insects like ants around, so if you are freaked out with this kind of thing, then this is not a place for you. Surrounding - The hotel is at the beach, beautiful area, not much snorkelling opportunity in terms of coral but many fish around. Food - We ate mostly on Mandi Mandi on the jetty, super nice setting on the beach, food is good. Activity - This place is for relaxing, food, and spa. They do arrange boat trips as well. There is no in house diving center but they do arrange dive trip with other dive centers.
fantastic!! definately a wonderful trip.”
this is definately a great hotel. however, the only draw back is that, been surronded by forest. there tends to have lots and lots of flies. We booked hill side sarang and ended up not using the pool, as there's just too much flies out there.
Quiet resort with a castaway feel”
Such a beautiful island. Well worth a visit (and may be more return visits to come) after first hearing about this paradise more than 20 years ago. Resort is small and really quiet, and facilities frankly not that great. But that is how I like it, without the trappings of the big brand names. The hillside sarang is really well designed in Malay style (I suppose), great for a getaway for doing absolutely nothing! Nice fruits and food as well, and surprisingly at very affordable price.
Great place to stay”
We enjoyed our stay. Staff were nice and friendly. Unfortunately, there is no phone reception at all in the island. If you want to experience fishing squid at night, you can try it at the jetty. Bring along your fishing gear....
Tioman's best secret resort~”
We took a very early morning trip from mersing jetty to genting village at around 6.30am. Reach genting village at about 8.30am, we didnt need to wait long and japamala speedboat arrived. Finally reached Japamala’s very own jetty, the water beneath so clear that we could see colorful fishes swimming and even live coral. The jetty also serves as one of their dining place, Mandi Mandi Restaurant where you can dine under the sky, or better, stars if you’re lucky! we then brought to reception area with built as a glass house. We were served lemongrass welcome drink. We only had 3 days 2 night at here. First night, we stayed at tree top chalet, with no#13, i think thats the best room with best view for tree top chalet, thanks Aruni for the arrangement. WE love mandi mandi restaurant, and met a very nice friendly staff , Jon, who is from Myanmar. The staff there are very thoughtful, and even gave my 2 kids a beach play set and ball,to my 2 kids when they had nothing to play at the beach. We met nice family who are from itali too, they will have a conference at singapore soon. Very amazing that they took 3 weeks to travel all around Malaysia before they reach japamala. Second night, we moved to seaview sarang which apparently the one and only there and the most lavish villa they have for couple..
Great resort with private beach, natural.”
We stayed at japamala for 3 days 2 nights. We chose seaview sarang for our second night. Aruni, the manager walked us to our Sarang. The moment Aruni opened the door we had to agree the Sarang worth all! It was super hugeee, about triple size of their smallest villa and very secluded to offer us utmost privacy. Thanks for the staff thoughtful, they had already prepared extra 2 beds for our kids. From info we read, very minimal trees being chopped during construction of this resort and to not disturb the natural landscape, you’ll find each and every villa is rather designed to fit their original location. One obvious example seen in our Sarang, the big rock was not moved but instead made a nice, natural hide for our small plunge pool :), the rock pool, hot hot small jacuzzi pond.. During the last night we were at japamala, our 2 kids were in sad mood.. and telling us that they wish to come back again soon. They can't even bear to leave here. Hahaha.. my cute boy told us, he wished to get photo with aruni, other staff too so that if next time he comes back here, he could remember their face. Thanks Jon, aruni, and other staff whom I dont know their name. Thanks for your thoughtful and wonderful day we had spend in japamala. See you next year
Japamala resort is stunning. Beautiful rooms with all the facilities. Great location, with a beach full of coral and tropical fish and even a tortle!! the hotel staff looks after you without being overwhelming, food was great, specially the Italian restaurant. I couldn't ask for a better place to stay!
Unique resort with great service”
I love this resort very much, though i stayed there during raining season. Very relax, good view, good food, great service. The staff there are very thoughtful and helpful, it was a wonderful and relaxing short trip for me and my sis, we enjoy it very much. Will definitely return to this paradise during sunny season to explore more about Tioman. And, the Spa is wonderful, must try.
One of the few last paradises left”
This resort is truly one of the few untouched paradises left. Rustic and untainted, it really brings you back to nature. JapaMala only has 13 villas so it can provide very personal and attentive service to every guest. Once you arrive, the Resident Manager will escort you to your villa where it is already pre-cooled and jazz music filled. No check-in is required nor signature requested after each restaurant meal as they know every guest by face. Even for the beach cabana drinks ordered, they will know which villa you're from before you tell them. As this is a private beach/part of Tioman, the only way to get there is via their sea taxi and a 2-way transfer for 2 will set you back
went for holiday for 3 days 2night. i love the place. it's away from the world without huge crowded and network. lol. itf you really want to relax, go japamala!!! staff are friendly adn great, food is delicous thought a bit pricey and limited choices but nevertheless l love the 3days 2 night holiday. basically doing nothing. lol. for people who is looking for exceitment, this is not the place for you. seriously nothing much to do, it's a great place to short get away to relax and spend more time with your partner. they will tidy up your room whenever you left the room and they will provide chocolate every night. they have lots of dvd for rent. foc. however the dvd quality isn't very good. 2 out of 3 dvd which i borrowded only can watch half way. that's quite annoying. we went during the moosoon season but very lucky that the weather is very good during our holiday there. the view from the balcony is super nice. beautiful sunset!!! we will be back!!!
beautiful, secluded, exclusive, extremely relaxing”
if you are looking for nothing to do, this is a place where you can just chill out in luxury. and if you get a little restless, there is always short, easy to moderate hikes all round the resort, or take a short trek to nearby genting village for some local food ans snack supplies, (but please do that when its peak season otherwise most shops are not opened otherwise just soak in the sun and sea breeze all-day long with a good book, sip their signature 'monsoon drink' and order a pizza from mandi-mandi restaurant. for more adventurous tastes, try the appetiser platter from tamarind terrace, loved the salmon parcels - salmon fllet wrapped in vietnamese rice paper and pan-fried till just done and served with a dollop of fiery green chilli coulis. to complete the japamala experience, book a 2-day bliss package (best deal on the list)and get an hour each day of masssage, paired with a scrub on the first day followed by an aromatic bubble soak in the jaccuzzi complete with honey lemon drink on the side....
