Nice stay”
Was a last minute booking while in NYC. Got a decent rate I guess. The good thing is bathroom is within the rooms itself so only shared with your roommates. Rooms were clean enough and beds were comfortable enough. Location is good too with many restaurants and businesses around. Would recommend
Simple Improvements would earn 5 stars”
I stay in lots of hostels, and I would stay here again. My room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Just a few simple things would make it much better. So free bagels with no cream cheese, come on, your in New York. Next fake creamer and coffee may or may not be there when stated. Five hooks for 6 people's coats, and no hand or shower soap. When I asked for soap, hand soap was provided, but most just assumed it would not be refilled, like the empty paper towels. $5 to rent a towel. The restaurant on site?did not see it. In past years, it was common to bring your own bedding and linens, but this is the first time in recent years that I have had to rent a towel and provide soap. Location is superb but noisy, which is to be expected so close to everything. Staff was nice and helpful, shower could have been cleaner and a bathmat to prevent having to stand on your rented towel would be nice.
For short-stay travelers on a budget”
I booked 1 bed in a 6-bed mixed dorm room for 2 nights since this was the only available room at the time of booking. There are 3 bunk beds that are placed lengthwise so you can have some privacy. I've stayed in dorm-type places before around Asia, so it was alright for me. I only needed a place to stay in close to Broadway & to the subway, so this was convenient. There was coffee and tea in the common area for free. Wifi connection was also good. I didn't know there were lockers, so I didn't use them. I would recommend bringing your own lock if you'd like to use the lockers. The bathroom is clean, but very spartan--you can see rust on the ceiling. I would recommend bringing slippers so you don't have to walk barefoot on the bathroom floor. While it was clean, there were no rugs inside. This was the cheapest, most convenient place for me in NYC. If traveling as a group, it would be a good option. But if you're a solo traveler who's wary about staying in a room with strangers at the time of COVID-19, I wouldn't recommend. To be safe, I wore a mask the whole time and when I was sleeping, I draped my blanket on the side to form a curtain. :)
The best hostel experience in NYC”
Yancy is the lead receptionist of both Jazz branches on Columbus Circle and Park. During my 3-week stay, she went above and beyond to ensure that my experience was safe and enjoyable. She always made sure that my linens were changed daily, accommodating me to the best of her ability. She also works the most hours out of all the staff, so, if she does not become a general manager soon, then she needs to move on to a place where she will be appreciated. From first-hand experience, Yancy is the only staff member that I see setting up breakfast and other decorations for the guests, in the common area. She also goes the extra mile to make sure every guest has their luggage stored safely, so that guests/ tourists can roam around the city without having to worry about their belongings getting stolen. I am surprised that she also manages to keep a smile on her face, after having worked multiple-double shifts (16 hours, for some consecutive days at a time). This unique work ethic and composure are rare characteristics that not many people have, and Yancy is one of some who showcase these traits—she is a very hard worker and is sometimes taken for granted. Because of her natural, mother-like instincts to willingly help others, with almost nothing in return, I have also seen Yancy go the extra mile for guests whose English is not their first language. Her ability to solve problems quickly ,and guide transcontinental guests and international tourists to a great experience, are part of the big reasons why my review is written to this extent. For a hostel that averaged at about $62 a night, my stay here has been one of the best out of all the hostels that I lived—Spain, Argentina, Colombia, Morocco, Macao, Los Angeles, etc. when you have staff that go to great lengths to ensure your safety and well-being, the positive experiences that come with your hostel stay go beyond aesthetic pleasure. And you remember your true purpose of living and become that much more grateful to l
Excellent Location for NYC”
The hostel is on the third floor in a building near Columbus Circle. The location is perfect for Central Park, Broadway shows, and shopping. It's also the cheapest decent place in Manhattan. It doesn't have any of the facilities most hostels do, but it doesn't matter. Lots of fast food just outside if you're on a tight budget. Lobster rolls and $1 pizza are within a block. The hostel itself is unremarkable, but clean. My room had 6 beds and a clean bathroom. There are a few wood chairs in a common area, but no kitchen or area to relax. Towels are $5, so bring your own. Overall, it's excellent for the price.
