LOVE IT SO MUCH”
Some of the quibbles in the reviews are right and make sense. Perhaps for big groups and those with heavy luggage, Jian Shan is not the most convenient choice. However, if you're solo or a small group that's not overly fickle, JIAN SHAN IS THE BEST. My room was, yes, small... But it was clean, the design was unique, the bed was comfortable, even the bathroom was extraordinary! It is a very practical choice for me looking for value for money and at the same time experience. The hotel has a very unique character that makes it a travel highlight by itself. And yes, this four(?)-story hotel does not have elevators, but the walk upstairs is a pretty good work out, LOL! If you don't have a lot of heavy luggage, then it's not a big trouble. In conclusion, I WOULD DEFINITELY STAY HERE AGAIN NEXT TIME.

Exceptional”
Taxi 110 NT $110 from Taipei Station. 10-15 minutes walk from Civil Rights West Mrt Station. The staff will carry the luggage to the room, and also to the downstairs when checking out. They also ask if they need to call a taxi and check their luggage. The room is large, the bathroom is spacious and clean.

Fabulous stay with amazing local vibes experience”
Had an amazing time staying there 3 nights. Great hospitality and service! Many delicious local foods options close by, fairly convenient access to public transportation (Many buses nearby) Definitely consider staying at this hotel again.

Very helpful”
We stayed here for 2 nights. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The hotel is near to nice food places. (You just have to google) We have left an item in the hotel room. They e-mailed us telling us that we have left something. Although one thing that I could comment on is that there is no shelf to put my toiletries in the toilet. Other than that, everything is okay :)

Good Location, Great Staff”
Team is very helpful and kind. Location is excellent - quick walk to two coffee shops, MRT station, short walk to Dadaocheng Pier, etc. We would stay here again.

Might be the best place to stay in TPE!”
First, the staff were very accommodating and considerate to give us a bigger room when he knew we had our 2 year old kid with us. The rooms were also very nice. The first room was small but it has ALL we need. Every detail in the room were lovely. Toiletries were changed everyday. It was quite far from public transport but very near Ningxia Night Market. But you can book Uber easily and go to any places easily because of low traffic. I loved our stay in Taiwan and Jianshan contributed to that.

Lovely Place!”
Although the location is not exactly next to the Railway Station and there is no lift for this historical building, the staff is so nice and willing to help you to pick up the luggage. The room is tidy and cozy.

Excellent”
Staff was friendly, offered to help me bring up my luggage since there was no elevator. Room was small but compact with all the necessary amenities. Very clean and quiet.

Cramped, but nice location”
The room was simply too cramped for me; there was only one place to put my (rather small) suitcase on the floor, and then I had to jump over it every time I wanted to reach the window. The bathroom was small as well, so everything flooded every time I showered. The floor was uneven (a two inch difference), which was really annoying. The worst thing was probably the fact that there wasn't an escape plan or any visible exit signs; that does NOT seem like a wise choice in a country plagued by earthquakes - or simply in case of fire (I was on the top floor with a narrow staircase). It didn't seem safe at all. The staff was very nice, though, and the neighbourhood is nice as well - around 15-20 minutes walk from the MRT.

Overall a good place to stay”
First, I want to point out what could be better and things that you might want to consider when staying here: - No elevator. If you are older or don't like climbing stairs, which are steep, you should ask for a lower level room. - There is no shower enclosure. This is not a big deal but after showering you will have to walk on a wet floor to use the bathroom. - The room runs small. I didn't mind this so much as I am ok with cozier rooms if it means saving money. Now some good things: - The staff was kind enough to have someone wait until around midnight on the night I arrived to get me checked in. I couldn't come earlier bc my flight landed after 10. I was in email contact with the hotel staff about it and they offered to stay behind. When I arrived the person that stayed behind was kind enough to carry my bag up 4 flights of stairs to my room. - They had umbrellas out for patrons to borrow when it rained. Much appreciated by me.

No lift. Be warned if you have weak knees.”
If you like retro/vintage or borderline old, then you might want to explore this hostel. Hostel sleeping double deck reminds me of Cage Men in Hong Kong. Be informed that this accommodation DOES NOT have a lift and stairs in this old building is rather steep. The room I got was miserably tiny. Let just say I've had better stay elsewhere in Taipei with the same price and better location. I clearly will not return.

Not worth it”
Great staff Awful rooms I changed rooms twice because of the smell. Air conditioning also never got cold. The hotel is really beat up. Not worth the price. I feel bad for the staff.

Very helpful staff in a beautiful hotel ”
We stayed 4 nights at Jianshan Hotel and were highly satisfied. The staff, particularly Paul, addressed all our needs: they bought a brand new baby cot for our 8 months old baby, assisted in obtaining hiking permits and showed us the best local eating place in the charming neighbourhood. The rooms are tastefully designed and beds very comfortable. We would definitively stay there again - also with a baby, since the crib is now ready :))

Great place, fantastic staff”
We spent three nights at Jianshan. It is well located, right behind the famous Dihua Street. The hotel is well kept and decorated with great taste. The staff is very friendly. They do all they can to help you out (and they speak English fluently).

Excellent Experience”
This unique, retro-themed, boutique was clean, convenient, and located within close walking distance to the subway, night market, numerous "street food" stalls, and old Taipei. The owner and staff (many thanks Chen, Paul and "da chieh" the housekeeper) who were exceedingly helpful in offering travel and sightseeing suggestions, and went out of the way to make my stay as comfortable as possible. This is a no-frills hotels, but the amenities were more than adequate. And the service was better than most high-end hotels I've stayed at all over the world. I can't recommend this hotel strongly enough. It felt like a home away from home.

Vintage hostel in a most interesting neighbourhood, close to Ningxia Night market”
The hostel has a long history, so do the neighborhood where it's located. The hostel is designed with a strong vintage flare, but the facilities such as the shower are modern so no need to worry about this. There are two laundry places and many convenience stores nearby. The hostel is also conveniently located near my favorite night market - Ningxia night market! I think it's the most delicious night market in the whole city;) The staffs here are helpful and responsive which made our stay even more pleasant. But do note that there is no lift in the hotel, but the staff here would help carry the luggage up and downstairs. Would recommend this hotel to travelers who like vintage and historical buildings, and those who are keen to explore the non-touristy side of Taipei.

A must stay ”
This is one place to stay if you're in Taipei. Very unique hotel, we'll designed and something very different from the norm. Excellent location. Approx 80 Taiwan dollars (£2) taxi to nearest train station and not far from Taipei main station. Staff were exceptional in helping us and going out of their way. Thank you.

Very friendly staff; Good for travellers with small luggages”
1) Very impressive with the service and attitude of staff - from very quick answers by emails before the trip to very attentive service to our needs during our stay; 2) There is no lift in the hotel so travellers with big/heavy luggages may need to take note on this; 3) Close to Ningxia Night Market with very delicious street food; 4) Two MRT stops from Taipei Station and then a 10-minute walk to the hotel - good for those who like quietness in some old streets but bad for those who like going back to the hotel room for many times during one day.

A little gem in Taipei”
I love this place and will make it my home base whenever I travel to Taipei! The staff is super friendly and helpful. The rooms are small but efficient and very well designed with lots of fun features. No breakfast but plenty of local options nearby. If you need a western style coffee, there's a Starbucks a few minutes walk that opens at 7 but only for the coffee - eat the local food in the many little stands in the area. The bustling Dihua Street is a few blocks away and two MRT stations are within 7 - 8 minutes plus plenty of bus options.
