Jizokan Matsuya Ryokan
Best place to stay in Nagano”
Everything at the Jizokan Matsuda Ryokan was excellent - the food, the service, the rooms and the location was unbeatable. I would recommend it to everyone in the world!
Wonderful Experience ”
I was very surprised when I found out that the Ryokan was so close to the Zenkoji Temple. The people at the ryokan were super nice and attentive. I loved the room and the public bath was a bonus. One night I had the typical dinner. The food dishes were presented very nicely and the many dishes were delicious but not overwhelming. I would highly recommend trying this.
A wonderful and homely traditional Japanese Inn”
This is a beautiful ryokan (traditional japanese inn). The inn is located about 50 m from Zenkoji temple and is a short walk from Zenkojishita station. We only stayed for two nights, but we wish it was longer. We had a private room for 3 with a private toilet and shower. The hotel is run by a lovely little family, who speak enough English for non-Japanese speakers to get by. If you really want to spoil yourself try out the breakfast feast (well worth the 1600 yen), you wont be disappointed. 10/10 would stay again.
Great location ”
This Ryokan is very pleasant, the staff very helpful and kind. The dinner is amazing : beautiful presentation and tasty.
Good location, but quite noisy inside”
The ryokan is a historic building, so quite charming inside with all wood architecture. However, due to the old wooden staircases and floors, all movements outside the room can be heard clearly in the room. Perfect location, very close to the zenkoji temple. Only shared bathroom on open doorway and one gentlemen toilet for all guests, so value for money a bit expensive.
Excellent ryokan, delicious dinner, very good service”
We were staying in this ryokan for the second time (first was in 2012). I was glad to notice that the level of service did not dropped since, everything was perfect, and the kaiseki dinner served in the room was still delicious. A little change though - instead of futon on the tatami directly we had this time 2 western beds in the bedroom (however the style of the living room was still traditional), first it was somewhat a disappointment (we like traditional ryokans) but eventually we felt happy as the beds were quite comfortable.
very special experience”
The hotel is converted from an ancient time Japanese house, it's one of the old houses in the street where you feel like you are back to the ancient time. we woke up to the great "young Snow" view where all the Japanese plants outside our windows was covered by a very thin layer of snow, it was spectacular. it's a family business, the old couple was very friend and their son could speak english. All of them were helpful. Breakfast was a very authentic Japanses prepared by the mom. Distance to touristy spots is great, I love this hotel. Tips: want something a bit more extreme? try walking around the hotel at night, say around 8ish, 9ish, we came back from dinner "down town" which is near the subway station about 15minns walk along the shopping districts (which was a nice walk). The "ancient street" was super quiet and it was a raining night so the atmosphere was a bit scary it felt like we travelled back to ancient time. all of us were a bit scared but we all loved the experience!
Super clean, very friendly hosts, great location. Also the food was incredible.
Wonderful expirence ”
I can’t tell you how wonderful this hotel was. The staff was so lovely, the hotel was so clean and the location was perfection! I am so sad we couldn’t stay one mor night. I can’t wait to come back and stay again!
Great Ryokan, Staff were fantastic, location was amazing would recommend to anyone without hesitation. Five Stars.
The staff was super friendly. Great location, the Ryokan was super nice, everything was very clean. Highly recommended.
Excellent service, comfortable rooms, very peaceful and quiet”
We had a superb experience at the family-run Jizokan Matsuya Ryokan. It is located within the Zenkoji-ko temple grounds so it’s very peaceful. All the staff were very friendly and accommodating especially the grandad who was always at reception. Breakfast was really good homemade Japanese style breakfast that varied everyday that we were there. It takes about 25 mins to walk to Nagano station, bus stop and train station also nearby so perfect base for going around Nagano. The room was very clean and big enough for two travellers with suitcases. We highly recommend this place and we would stay here again next time we visit Nagano.
Top marks for location and comfort ”
Lovely welcoming people, comfortable room with a view of a temple(or monastery?) entrance, tiny but clean and workable ensuite bathroom, squeaky clean public bath, good Japanese breakfast. Right near Zenko-ji. Highly recommended if visiting the area.
Amazing location, loved the Ryokan experience”
The location is A+ A few steps away from the temple. Great location to attend the morning blessing ceremony. Loved the japanese futton, onsen experience. Very nice staff. We had dinner at a wonderful resturant nearby. Ryokans are expensive and this one has a great value and the experience of having the temple pretty much for yourself at night and in the early morning is totaly amazing.
This ryokan is delightful, the architecture and fittings took me back to a traditional Japan. The food exquisite, and this is from someone new to the cuisine. The onsen clean and relaxing. I LOVED my stay at this property
The place to stay in Nagano”
The property is in the middle of the temple area, just over a mile from Nagano station. It is beautifully maintained and in the middle of everything. The staff are wonderful and the facilities are immaculate. I have already recommended it to family who are traveling to Japan later this year.
Perfect for a visit to Sensouji temple - an authentic Japanese experience”
The ryokan is located at the spot where the original main hall of the Sensouji temple stood before it burned down 300 years ago. This is a very old ryokan, but with great charm. As the ryokan is located on the main temple street there are lots of small stalls and shops to check out, and not to mention the Sensouji temple just down the street. If you want to go see the small procession of the monks in the morning (参拝) this ryokan is simply the best. I've added more photos and details about the stay at my blog adventuresofanette.
Right in the heart of Zenkoji temple this Ryokan is a great spot to stay. My first time staying in Ryokan style accomodation and I really enjoyed it. Staff were super helpful and friendly. Don't forget your local apple on your way out the door!
Fun ryokan experience”
Great location next to temple. Old building, a warren of rooms. There will be stairs! Room spacious, although toilet cubicle so small we had to sit sideways! Japanese mattress on floor is extremely hard.! Breakfast was included, very Japanese, very large! We ordered Keiseki dinner. Many new food experiences for us, not all to our taste but fun to try. Huge number of dishes. Cost around $35 pp, a very good deal for that kind of meal in Japan and well worth it. Onsen was small, nice, but too hot for us wimps.
Everyone was so welcoming there - loved it!”
Location was great - right next to the main temple in Nagano. Easy to get the bus from the train station.
