Value for money, perfect for frugal travelers”
If you're a traveler on a budget, but you don't want to sacrifice cleanliness and safety, then Kam Leng Hotel if the perfect choice for you. It has all the basics you need from a hotel without the fuss -- a comfortable bed, clean toilet and bath, clean towels, the usual supply of bottled water, a digital safe, and yes, even a 32" LCD TV. The space isn't much in our Standard Queen room, but big enough for two adults to move around and fix up a large luggage. Location-wise, it's right across the Lavender Food Square, which is open 24hrs, as well as a 7Eleven, and a bus stop. Getting a cab from this location is easy (we tried both at night and after lunch), but if you enjoy walking like we do, you can walk to either Lavender or Farrer Park MRT stations, or even to malls like City Square Mall and Sim Lim Square. They also have friendly staff, especially the lady who does housekeeping, who never fails to greet us with a smile when we see her across the hall. The decors are also interesting, mixing in a lot of old stuff with the newly-renovated interior, making the place very welcoming. And oh, did I mention that we got all these at a fantastic price?! Great value for money, indeed!
If size isn't an issue, this is as good as it gets”
first off, it's cheap. of course, there are places that are cheaper in singapore- come to mind. but this is a different kind of hotel. it's a small boutique hotel. and small boutique hotels aren't usually this cheap. it's also in a great location. kam leng is in a neighborhood that is going to take off very soon. down the road you have little india, there are a couple of train stations within walking distance and there seems to be a steady flow of cabs outside. lavender food court is also right across the street so you'll never be hungry. speaking of food, the cafe is lovely. "suprette", i believe is called. i had breakfast there every day and it was really good. the bar is worth a few drinks before heading out for a night out. the hotel itself, as first impressions go, is great. they have lovingly restored an old shophouse/building and there are enough hints of its old charm to make you feel like you're in another era. when you reach the room, you prepare yourself for the smallness of the space as you've seen it written in the reviews. but when you see it, you realize just how small it is. i've stayed here twice already and both rooms were small. they fit a queen size bed and a small table and not much else. the toilets are just as small. and what i hate about the toilets is that there isn't a divider between the toilet bowl and the shower. so when you shower, everything gets wet. but it's clean. and if you're lucky enough to get a room not facing the main road, it's also quiet. you're not going to get a better deal in singapore for this price and type of hotel. recommended.
Great value for money hotel”
Kam Leng Hotel is very accessible for leisure and business purposes. It is very near the Parrer Park MRT station. From the hotel doorstep, walk to your right. Turn right on the first corner. Walk through the park to the Sturdee street. When you reach sturdee street, walk to your left until you reach an intersection and cross the street to the kitcherner link road and walk straight further. Just follow the natural curves of the roads. At the end of kitchener link, you can see City Square Mall. The Farrer Park station is in the basement of the mall. Mustafa Center, meanwhile is right accross the City Square Mall. From the Farrer Park Station, everything singapore has to offer is just a train away.
Nice place, ignore the bad reviews”
After reading a lot of reviews of similarly priced hotels in Singapore we felt we were going to be staying in an absolute dive. However, we were both pleasantly suprised at the Kam Leng Hotel. The place had a retro feel to it, rooms were small/compact but adequate and it was a very nice, comfortable stay. The breakfast was absolutely superb. It's a la carte with lots of choices. The English, pancakes and french toast were all wonderful. I highly recommend this hotel and the city is great.
Wonderful hotel, clean and great staff!”
The Kam Leng was our first hotel stay in Malaysia and a great way to start our holiday. The front desk staff were helpful and the waiters in the restaurant great. We bought the food vouchers which was 10SGD for 2 (approx $4 CND each) which was in our opinion was a good value. The location was great as the MRT was only about a 7-8 minute walk from the hotel and the Lavender Street food court across the street is open 24 hours. Most taxi drivers know the location of this food court which is helpful if needing to cab it back to the hotel. We would definitely stay at the Kam Leng again. Definitely recommend a trip to Marina Bay with a walk along the waterfront. Suggest going late afternoon so you can see everything in the daylight and then watch it all light up at night. Also enjoyed wandering around Little India, visiting the many temples and mosques. Make sure you visit the Bhudda Tooth Relic Temple and go up to the rooftop garden to see the massive Tibetan style 'Prayer Wheel'. Enjoy your stay!
Great stay in an old Singapore style hotel”
We were delightfully surprised by our experience at Kam Leng Hotel. This is a very new hotel and it looks very clean and modern, while maintaining the old-Singapore charm. If you look at this hotel through street view on Google Maps you will see an old, run-down shop front with the Kam Leng sign hanging with chipped paint. In reality, however, the newly renovated space looks great inside and out. The little restaurant is very comfortable with excellent food (our room included a lovely free breakfast). The staff were very helpful and were able to answer all our questions. We were pleased with every part of our experience at this hotel.
Good chic hotel”
With the rate you pay, and comparing to the other hotels in SG with the same rate, Kam Leng is such a pleasant surprise. Spacious room, nice amenities, very clean, strong Wifi, accommodating staff. I asked for an hour extension of checkout because I was finishing a report for work. They gladly agreed. On other hotels, they charge $10/HR or fraction of it. Highly recommended.
wow-- you are in the "in crowd"”
i was excited to come back to the kam leng hotel at the end of the day. i felt safe, hotel very convienient to all sights in singapore. transportation is very easy to access. you can walk to places you need to go,you can ride to the bus to places, eateries are all around. i am planning my stay there for next break in dec. keep up the fantastic job of offering hotels that do not cost you an arm and a leg and still offer 5 star qualities. i can not wait to return and show off the gem that i discovered.
Lovely rooms with vintage concept”
I will definitely be back to this hotel if I'm going to Singapore again and will recommend to friends. Location wise is good and it is situated near a heritage area of Singapore. Bus stop right in front of the hotel will bring you anywhere around Singapore. There is also alot of cosy eating places around the hotel. 7-11 convenient store is just right opposite the hotel. The hotel staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Love this hotel! Definitely a hidden gem! Thanks Kam Leng Hotel management, you guys are doing a fantastic job!
Lovely ramshackle boutique hotel”
I've always admired the Kam Leng hotel — even before it became what it is today. It's a gorgeous building. I've often walked by and thought, this would make a lovely hotel. And they have done it. They've taken the shell of an abandoned building with a gorgeous facade and turned it into a great stay. To make it even better, it's a great stay on a great budget in this city, full of soulless $500 rooms. It isn't five star luxury, but it is cute and sufficient. Suprette, the bar in the lobby, has great food too. It's also on the fringe of the 'city' and is walking distance from all of my favourite things here. Great staycation spot.
A good-for-money for budget travelers”
We stayed for one night and Kam Leng is a good healthy walk from the bustle of Little India and Queen Street bus station. It was also a good distance from Little India and Farrer Park MRT stations, thus it is convenient to go anywhere. The hotel maintained some of its exterior vintage design but successfully combined them with the modern touches. We took a windowless room but a small window on the upper half of the wall allows some sunlight into the room. Despite the vintage desk and chair, the room has small modern fridge, small safe, a soft bed and pillows, reasonable size flat LCD TV, hairdryer and small hangers for some clothes. As I mentioned, the bathroom was spacious and lined with vintage tiles and mosaic. There was hot shower (which we are grateful to sooth our tired body), free toothbrush and mini toothpaste and free flow of hair and body shampoo separately. The hotel was quiet but could cause slight unease to claustrophobic guest when taking the windowless rooms. However, we will try the window room during our next Singapore trip. There was a hotel laptop for guests who wishes to utilise them for short email check or internet surfing. But surfing on your device is better as the internet speed is superb. There was also a small cafe for breakfast, but we didn't try them. Staff attitude was okay but if they're more friendly, it could be a more pleasant impression for guests. It's also good if they could speak up and elaborate more about places to go in Singapore, to guests especially non-Singaporean like us. Overall, the hotel is a good budget hotel for budget travelers. For my future travels to Singapore, I would stay here again!
Great location and lovely hotel”
I highly recommend Kam Leng Hotel for its location, its in front of Lavender Food Square - where authentic Chinese food are-like wanton noodles, fried dumplings and carrot cake and more. It's near 3 MRT station - Lavender, Little India and I forgot the other. It's very accessible and near Bugis and Chinatown and Orchard, also near the heart of Little India. Hotel Staff are really warm and accomodating. I love the style of the hotel, classic/vintage - combination of old (old kam leng) and new (heima chic style with teal, pink, yellow, light green and light blue colors) since the hotel was build since 1938. There's a complimentary water and tea and coffee. Has blow dry too! Budget friendly yet perfect for you and your needs
Great boutique hotel. Interesting Retro Design”
Staying at the Kam Leng Hotel near balestier was a fantastic experience at a reasonable price. The most noticable thing when you enter is the retro feeling and the authenticity that comes with that. Old furniture, tiles and paint have been retained which makes the hotel stand out from other budget establishments. The room was clean and a good size with natural daylight to the bathroom. The ceiling heights were more than generous giving a sense of spaciousness. Lavender station is minutes away, situating the hotel in a very good location.
Good budget accommodation”
Kam Leng is a budget hotel, so there are not a lot of bells and whistles. Yes, the rooms are small - very small - but you get what you pay for, right? I paid around $70 per night. If I'd paid $170 I'd be asking for my money back - but what you get is pretty good for $70. It did take some getting used to - the room I was given was not the one shown in the photos on this site. I had the standard double, or maybe the superior queen, I forget now - but both showed a bathroom with three windows, divided from the main room by a glass wall. This is NOT what I got. My bathroom had a single window and was divided from the main room by a solid wall - which made the room very dark. I'm someone who needs to see the outside world - needs natural light - so this did take some time to get used to - luckily I had 5 nights to wrap my head around it. Having said that, Kam Leng has plenty going for it. The decor is great - kitsch and cool. There is a 711 across the road - and a hawker market. There are plenty of restaurants nearby - and even a microbrewery 2 doors down. There is a fantastic craft beer bar (Druggists) a couple of streets away. The bus stop is across the road. The MRT station is about 10 minutes walk away - and I walk slow. Near the MRT is a big shopping mall and the Mustafa Centre. I usually stay further down in Little India, but I was glad I took a chance on Kam Leng. So, value for money - but don't place too much trust in the website photos.
Great atmosphere, fantastic decor”
The Kam Leng has been fantastically and lovingly refurbished to give it a modern feel while retaining the character of the hotel's original design, dating from 1938. Rooms are small but comfortable, with soft beds and a creative combination of original features with newly added retro fittings. The bathroom is almost as big as the rest of the room and features a glorious rain shower. The bathroom is separated by conservatory-style windows - probably the least aesthetically pleasing feature of the room. It also limits the natural light into the room since the only external window is in the bathroom - while conversely letting in too much light in the mornings given there are no curtains in the bedroom. Location is convenient, a 10-minute walk to Lavender MRT and with Lavender hawker centre directly opposite (though closing at the end of September 2014). Staff are friendly and helpful and the reception area has comfy and cosy seating, plus there's a sun terrace on the second floor reached by a winding staircase from the courtyard. In-house restaurant Suprette is design-led and worth checking out for a drink or a meal - it's a winner. Overall a lovely hotel - I'll be back.
Absolutely charming Singapore experience”
I believe this hotel was built in 1938 and the charm of that era is evident inside the building and out. One can just feel the history, imagining old Singapore and all of its wild stories as a shipping hub in the early 20th century. All the doors to the rooms seem to be painted in different colors, and I was so excited my room was pink. Inside there is a funky smell, not entirely pleasant, but you grow accustomed to it in a few minutes and it doesn't diminish the appeal of staying at Kam Leng. Bathroom was sort of a quirky triangle with a shower head at the longest point, no door or curtain. Not a big deal to me, as I live in Korea now and showers like that are standard--plus the water doesn't begin to encroach on the toilet/sink area since it's far from the showerhead. Nice towels, decent pillows. Adorable lobby downstairs. And all fairly close to Arab Street and Little India. I'd be happy to stay again next time I'm in Singapore. Great value for a nostalgic experience.
A blend of heritage and modern design”
The Kam Leng hotel is a heritage building of Singapore and is indeed heartening to see that the bricks, floor tiles, and even the outlook of that British colonial elevator has been conserved to create a atmosphere that brings you back to our forefathers days. The bath kit is a unique creation that seems almost like opening up a big matchstick box with different " goodies " within. The queen size bed directly faces the television, making it really comfortable to enjoy different local television programmes after a hot shower. The only downside of preserving most construction material from the olden days is that the walls and ceilings of the rooms are quite thin and I could almost hear my neighbour from upstairs moving some furniture across the floor in the wee hours of the morning. Adding to that I would prefer a bigger bathroom where the shower and toilet is partitioned with glass, so that the shower water would not flood the entire toilet floor.
VERY Pleasant stay.”
We really had a pleasant stay at Kam Leng Hotel. Location wise its fantastic, just 2 stops from Ferrer park MRT, and Rochor MRT is few stops away, just opposite to Bus Stop, eateries all around. The hotel wifi was satisfactory, and cleanliness was good. The bed was super comfortable, the looks may be faded but actually the hotel theme has been set in such a way to look that way. Overall we had a pleasant stay. For sure we will stay again, and would recommend others stay also.
Quite a surprise”
The only downside to this hotel is that it's between two MRT stations (Lavender and Farrer Park) making it a little bit of a walk going there. If you like taking the bus then it'll be a lot closer than you think. The hotel itself is full of character and old charm, which I really liked. The staff were extremely friendly that they helped my fiance find her retainers in the garbage bin when it was accidentally thrown out. The room was spacious for what we paid for. You can get cheaper hotels in Geylang but value for money, Kam Leng is much better.
Nice design hotel, Boutique style”
We had a very nice stay in the Kam Leng Hotel. The building is an old Chinese warehouse (?) which was redecorated in a contemporary style with a lot of old details still existing. It gives you a Boutique hotel feeling, without the costs. This hotel is one of the most affordable options we've come across in expensive Singapore. The hotel is about 10 mins walking from an MRT/LRT station, but there is a lot of buses stopping just across the street, which is very convenient. The hotel has a small restaurant which mainly serves Western food. Not very cheap, but very big portions. And the Western food is a good choice, since there is a Hawker center across the street which serves all the Asian options. I would definitely stay at this hotel again when I am in Singapore.
