Bad experience
I was booking a room with condition 2 room 1 night 6 persons. As soon as I reached the hotel and check in there was staff tell me that I have to pay more since I already paid everything via agoda so I denied to pay it and give her explanation and she commit us to stay a night with no more charge. But in the morning there was some staff trying to force us to pay there was misunderstanding since last night but staff let us stay. At that time I felt that I was cheated by the hotel if the staff not let us stay and willing to pay since last night. the men staff was not polite as normal he pretend that he couldn't understand english language and turn his face off when I speak with him I don't understand why because this hotel is in good location and so many foriengner stay here I believe he could understand but he try to ingnor us.

More like a Motel 6
We wanted to try a ryokan traditional Japanese hotel, so we booked Kamogawaken for three nights. The positive: 1) The location is awesome. It's in one of the best areas in Kyoto, next to the big river and a tree lined street with a gentle flowing stream down the middle, lined with incredibly good restaurants. 2) The Japanese breakfasts are great. You get 16 different foods at breakfast. 3) The public bath is clean and nice. There is a toilet and shower in your room, too. 4) The staff are gracious and attentive. However, the English is limited so we couldn't get our bathroom re-cleaned. 5) There's a 7-11 (GREAT for good food!) and a Starbucks next door. The negative: 1) The hotel is old and smells musty and bad. Our room's toilet reeked of urine, and had urine spray on the toilet and hair. 2) The rooms are old. Expect old tile, basic bath products, and small towels. 3) In the US, you'd pay no more than $125-150/night in a big city for this room. We paid over $300 for a family of 4. The amenities are what you'd find in a low-end US motel. Overall, we probably wouldn't stay here again, although we would stay in a hotel in the area. At best, try 1-night here and then switch to a Western-style hotel. We're pretty adventurous, not picky, and love authentic experiences, but this was a disappointment.

Ryokan experience
Location is very convenient, near the train station and shopping / market area, easy to find food as well. Recommended for those who want ryokan experience.

Good food, but not really a ryokan for me
Very good food.
Very good food but it is not the traditional type of ryokan i was expecting. It is more like a shop house convert guest house with tatami.

Nice experience
location , room service staff, big room
the hotel lobby had a funny unpleasant smell and the room door was very old school and they require you to leave the key at the front desk as you leave the hotel. other than these, the overall experience was great. the Room turnover was amazing and very discreet. Very good at noting details. the location was good as well right smack between two train stations and in the centre of all the activities.
