Service has improved out of sight;Awesome new wing”

Deluxe rooms are Beautiful, location can't be beaten, well established brand

i stayed in a deluxe room here and had a lovely stay. the showers are awesome, service is great. the kathmandu guest house is an institution, and it would be easy for management and staff alike to become complacent; a few years back i felt they may have. on this stay however i was delighted at the friendliness of the staff which made for a comfortable stay. i was however disappointed with the travel agent/trekking agent situated near the atm. they charged me ridiculous prices for flights and visa services. i'll never do business with them again. they may not even be affiliated with kgh (i hope not). all in all a great 3 days with this mainstay guest house.

Enjoyable entertaining and well cared for”

Attentive staff who were all helpful, courteous and good company.

This is a good hotel to experience Nepalese hospitality. There were opportunities to take it easy, to experience local sights, to take days out with personal drivers and even arrange alternative overnight stays at other hotels in the KGH group where longer excursions are planned. All rates offered were matched with our budget. The location is great to explore local shops, restaurants and sights ...all that Thamel has to offer, but it is also a tranquil base to shelter overnight or for a few hours away from the excitement of Kathmandu during the day. This is particularly true of the beautiful courtyard garden and the all-day catering it offers. We particularly enjoyed the many well stocked bookshops full of new and second-hand books from all round the world and the literary knowledge of the proprietors. If you wish to buy local souvenirs, beware of the many imports and large profit margins sought. August meant our stay was less crowded but still with warm sunny weather and largely overnight rain. The staff here were all that one could expect, we enjoyed their company as well as their services and have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to fellow travellers wishing to experience local courtesy and a variety of good levels of comfort.

Always a pleasure”

KGH absolutely deserves their reputation as an iconic place to visit in Kathmandu. The staff and management really work diligently to provide the best possible experience for their guests. As a multiple return visitor over a ten year span it is very gratifying to be welcomed and recognized with such evident pleasure and appreciation. Kathmandu can be a challenging and chaotic city to negotiate, and KGH provides a real haven. Their experience and services in supporting visitors before and after trekking adventures in the Nepal countryside really makes a positive difference!

Quiet retreat in the heart of Kathmandu”

The Kathmandu Guest House is brilliantly located in the heart of Thamel, yet provides a quite and restful retreat from the busy and hectic streets outside. The breakfast spread is excellent, as is their regular menu and it's great to be able to dine in after a busy day or on a return from trekking. Walk everywhere and you have a lovely garden setting with a safe ATM to use as well. Home away from home for trekkers, travellers and tourists. The staff were friendly and helpful and there are other great facilities like a hairdresser and beauty salon. You can choose your level of room and we were very happy with our fairly simple room which was comfortable and convenient.

Great Hotel but Needs a Bit of Work”

Peaceful, Location, Free Breakfast

after traveling around the world for 11 months visiting 30 countries it was a bit shocking arriving in kathmandu and realizing how little you get for your money compared to the rest of asia! what you can get for night elsewhere will cost you well over night here so budget travelers be aware! kathmandu guest house was the 3rd place we stayed during our 2 week visit and was by far the best but of course this came at a cost 3-4x that of the other places we stayed and quite frankly i'm not convinced it was worth it. now don't get me wrong kgh is a beautiful place in the heart of thamel with peaceful gardens providing an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. when booking we opted for a room in the new wing which was beautiful and a cut above the rest. we were promised 24hr power (unheard of in ktm), daily room service, free breakfast, hair dryer, etc. unfortunately whoever managed this new project has dropped the ball on several things but one of the major ones was the power outlets. using south african power plugs is not the most convenient and even the hair dryer (which they attempted to charge me for) which the hotel provides came with a british power cord so i was unable to use it! each day the pillows were left on the floor after cleaning and it took 2 days for the coffee cup that the cleaner left in the hall to be picked up! the breakfast here is very average and not often hot or looking fresh if you come down more than an hour after it starts. and finally the internet, only free in the restaurant which is just absurd now days considering how cheap internet is and everyone is providing it, the owners clearly need to wake up here. now typically i wouldn't complain about these things and would brush it off to the ways of the 3rd world but after having some of the most amazing service for 1/10 of the price elsewhere i think they need to be held accountable if they want to charge western prices.

Nerve-center of Thamel, Kathmandu”

Location, service, setting

After traveling around Nepal, arriving at the KGH was a pleasure - quiet, attractive setting with rooms ranging in price from $2 (original dorm) to $160 (new luxury wing). Staff is friendly and attentive, fellow guests are diverse and interesting to watch, breakfast in outdoor garden setting is good (Illy coffee is extra! but a nice alternative to the Nescafe available in much of Nepal and with the complementary breakfast). This place really is the nerve-center of Thamel, the tourist center of KTM. Everything is within walking distance, yet the hotel itself is secluded and quiet. Front-desk staff are friendly and helpful. Several small shops on the premises sell souvenirs, maps, and even fine jewelry. The rooms vary according to price, but are all clean and comfortable; a $50 room with bath was more than adequate and looked out onto the central garden.

An oasis in the middle of Thamel”

Extremely friendly and helpful staff; very quiet although the hotel is in the vicinity of many clubs and bars playing loud music.

i spent my last night in nepal at the katmandu guest house and had a good night's rest in this unexpected splendid oasis in the middle of thamel's din. the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. initially i was to be in an old small room on the first floor with a tiny view of the garden - i had just arrived from pokhara and was told early in the morning at 9.00am that my room would be ready within an hour. however, when i checked with the receptionist close to noon, the room had still not been done. i was frustrated with this since i was booked on a tour to bhaktapur and we were leaving shortly, and had hoped to check in and clean up before leaving for the bhaktapur tour. i made a complaint and was unexpectedly upgraded to a deluxe room facing the garden. this was indeed much appreciated. i'm making another trip to nepal next year and intend to spend more time at kgh, and would recommend friends to stay there as well. the guest house and its surroundings are extremely clean and the garden is a welcome change from the dust in the streets. it's indeed a five-star guest house.

clean rooms, beautiful garden, modern-enough ammenities

make sure you go for the 9xx rooms in the new block, because they are significantly newer, cleaner, brighter, and quieter than the other rooms. i was in a 2xx room for one night and had an allergy attack because of the mold. i've looked at 5+ guest houses in thamel the 9xx rooms in kgh here is the best i've seen, and the only place i trust to stay in, so it's totally worth the higher-than-average price to me. they even have "western / real enough" sausage at breakfast, which was amazing for me!

Great Location, Great Staff, and Great Effort”

Staff, Location, Accomodations

Despite all the challenges that Nepal has faced in 2015, the Kathmandu Guest House staff remains hopeful. Their hope was contagious. They had nearly completed all of their renovations and repairs following the earthquake in 2015. Everyone was very helpful and accommodating. They quickly helped us arrange day trips, taxis, etc. They told us about many great restaurants within walking distance of our room. We really hope to stay at Kathmandu Guest House again one day.

Lovely oasis from bustling city streets”

Location, atmosphere, food

Although this is one of the more expensive places to stay in Kathmandu, this guest house is a serene escape from crazy busy Thamel. The rooms are comfortable, but not any better than most budget places and the shower is average. What you're paying for when you stay here are the seclusion and surroundings- the buildings and gardens are simply beautiful and the food is delicious. It's close to tourist attractions and other great cafes and restaurants.

Beautiful hotel with peace and tranquility ”

Exquisite, peaceful garden where you can relax and have tea. Hotel has character where time appears to have stopped. Comfortable rooms with nice showers. Great breakfast. Oasis of calm, peace and tranquility.

It was a pleasant surprise to walk into the hotel after the bustling, noisy streets of Thamel. The hotel provides a sense of calm, tranquility and peace yet has a brilliant location for exploring busy Thamel and Kathmandu. The twin room faced the garden and looking directly onto the Buddha. The beds were extremely comfortable with a large bathroon and good hot shower. The staff were attentive though I was unable to have ice cream which was on the menu. The wine we chose was also unavailable bu the staff provided alternatives. Dinner was good, I had a fish curry which was tasty. Next morning breakfast was taken in the outdoor restaurant as was dinner. The self service breakfast had variety but the pancakes were rather dry due to being kept warm. The eggs were made fresh and however you wanted them. The cost for the room, under €30 for a twin which did have air conditioner despite the room description was excellent value for money. The food was good but not as good value. Going through the gates of the hotel was a rapid transfer back to the reality of Kathmandu.

Hang out in the courtyard”

Courtyard / garden, wifi

Thamel is pretty loud, wild, and crazy, so I loved Kathmandu Guest House's garden / courtyard area, which gives you some escape from the insanity that is Thamel. Plus it has wifi (NOT free, actually more expensive than the internet cafe across the street from the hotel), so it's a great place to relax and catch up with your emails. I haven't seen any other Thamel hotels with this amount of outdoor space (usually they only have a small roof deck) so that's why I like the Kathmandu Guest House.

A great very versatile hotel/guest house ”

Right in the center of the tourist area yet can find peace and quiet.

Always remember you get what you pay for. This guest house has a huge selection of room types to choose from. If you want cheap, you can have a single no bathroom room that is very cheap. If you want an expensive luxury deluxe room you it is also available. I stayed in 3 different types of rooms and the more expensive was worth it. As in most areas in Nepal there are power outages and the luxury rooms have a backup power supply that never cut out for very long. The restaurant serves excellent food and there is a tour operator there as well as many shops to purchase gifts for back home. And it is right in the center of Tamel which is the touristy area of Kathmandu. Yet it is set back off the road so you can get some peace and quiet away from the hectic hustle and bustle of the streets. I will stay there when I return to Kathmandu. They treated me very fair and with kindness.

A welcome respite with quiet green space (and western standard) in Thamel. Oooohhhhh yes!”

KGH was recommended by our guide as a good place to stay. Our initial stay, before our trek, we appreciated a nice hotel room, with a lovely breakfast and quiet green space, all within the hustle and bustle of Thamel. On our return from our Annapurna Circuit trek and lodges of various types, we appreciated it even more. Green space, quiet, breakfast and western attached bathroom... lovely.

Iconic Kathmandu hotel”

The hotel is 51 years old but still going strong. It’s been the choice of most celebrities who have visited Kathmandu and lots of mountain climbers. We stayed in a standard room which was in the original wing and a little basic but comfortable. Our room overlooked the rear of the hotel kitchen so it was a bit noisy at night and early in the morning. The hotel opens on the east side on to the middle of Thamel with lots of restaurants and of course souvenir shops, rickshaws, etc. A few streets are clear of traffic but the others can be hectic with cars and bikes and carts as well as hundreds of tourists. The breakfast was good, dinner was reasonably priced and delicious. Staff were helpful. The only difficulty was finding the entrance. The taxi driver didn’t really know where he was going so make sure you have a good map. The taxi entrance is on the western side of the hotel down a short road.

Great hotel in a great location”

The hotel is in a great location in Kathmandu, Thamel. Once inside the gates there is a lovely garden area with a restaurant. The rooms are fairly well appointed and of a good size. Hot water was available on demand and there was plenty of space to unpack and put 2 suitcases. The reception staff were helpful in booking a driver to take us to and from the airport and out and about for day trips. Outside the hotel gates you can walk to many restaurants, bars and shops. The Standard Chartered ATM inside the hotel grounds doesn't charge any fee for withdrawals so if you need money and are staying at the hotel it's a great option. Breakfast was a fairly good selection of eggs, breads, cereals and hot drinks along with pancakes, baked beans and potatoes. We stayed on the 'new wing' and the only downside was that people walked past our room window talking loudly while they were walking around the garden. Not much of an issue but it could disturb some guests. Overall a great choice and would recommend this hotel.

A classic under transformation”

Convenience and setting

The KGH location and the garden setting were the big selling points for us. Unfortunately, our room overlooking the garden was not quite at all due to the new wing being constucted adjacent to it - with construction work going on from first light until 10.00pm. To their credit the management granted us a discount on the tarrif due to the inconvenience. This should not be a problem once the new building is completed in a month or two. As everyone in Kathmandu knows the KGH it was really easy for transport and meeting people. The buffet breakfast is tremendous.

Yes, Yes, Yes,”

The Kathmandu Guest House is drenched in hypnotic history; it elevates the word 'location' to a perfect nexus of space and time. Inside its high walls, you experience a tranquillity that is in complete contradiction to the high-speed molecular chaos of life ebbing and flowing outside the walls. The front office staff got a little John Cleese in Fawlty Towers at times, but what were they doing? They were doing their best! Great place to be reincarnated, then you would never have to leave.

An Oasis in a city of chorused chaos”

As a frequent traveler to Nepal I am a regular guest at KGH. Over the years I have come to know the staff and a return is like a visit to family. The garden, in a city short on green space, is always a welcome respite from the bustle of Kathmandu. The breakfast is varied and always good.
