      Pro: - The property is not bad. - Most of the staff is very courteous and very helpful. Cons: - Restaurant is expensive and the service is pathetic! We waited for about 45 minutes after ordering and was still not served. We ordered simple roti / sabji ! I had to cancel the order and went in to the town for lunch. Having said that, I was told that a lot of people from outside, come to the hotel for lunch! - Breakfast spread can be improved - At the breakfast, I was taken a back, as the veg and non-veg items were on the same burner (one vessel with three partitions). - There is no running hot water. Hot water is available 3 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening. Even that water is not very hot.

      Excellent Weekend”
      We were a group of 6 people with 2 couples. We arrived on Saturday noon to King's Cliff from Bangalore. 3 of us rode our bikes & a car. The staff were extremely generous through our requests all weekend. One of them being a secure space to park our high end bikes. The place has a cozy & calm vibe to it. It takes you back in time ! Every element in this place is very vintage, yet has a contemporary appeal to it. I would urge travelers to opt for their Deluxe room as primary option. The view from the window is mind blowing. Its worth every penny. The restaurant Earl's secret is the best part of this place. There is no better place to step out in Ooty for a grub other than Earl's Secret. Make use of it as much as you can. Had a wonderful weekend & looking forward to return soon.

      Just like Britain in the 60's”
      The cheerfull and helpfull staff doing their very best despite the management failings. The freshly cooked breakfasts were excellent.
      This hotel has enormous potential but is over managed. For instance, asking a waiter for French Fries instead of Garlic Bread on a menu item involved, first a refusal, secondly a "I'll have to ask the manager" thirdly "The manager says " No"". A request for the manager to come to explain why it was not possible produced a manager who said it was possible after all. The dining room sports a vast multi-cuisine menu so virtually nothing is freshly prepared. Reheated food on unheated plates is not what I expected, though the presentation was immaculate. In our 4 months of traveling in India I had my second attack of "Delhi belly" here. My subsequent request for an omlette for dinner needed the involvement of the Manager, again. Ooty, while we were there was quite cold, the rooms are draughty and heated only by a wood fire in the grate, very attractive but not very hot and completely ineffective in the bathroom. Hot water is available in the morning and on request at 15 minutes notice at any time. This sort of attitude, and the locked bookcase in the lounge reinforce a general feeling that the customers are not trusted or welcome.

      very good property but few nagatives like not ready to run genset after 11pm. paying huge money for every thing but managment dosnt provide diesel ( comment from a staff ). fire places work only after lot of pressure. billing should be taken care. no room heaters provided. food is very very expensive.

      Peace and quiet and a colonial feel”
      Lots of character, great location, sit by the fireplace!
      I chose this place based on independent recommendations from 2 different friends. Initially my room was one of the cheapest ‘executive’ rooms, which was a little shabby but had plenty of character, and I was able to access the WiFi. Unfortunately it was next to the kitchen and there was a lot of noise from 7am, and before 10.30pm. I'd been hoping to spend the evening relaxing in my room by the fire, so this was disappointing. When I asked to shift rooms I was offered 30% discount to upgrade to a deluxe room for the remaining 2 nights, in the separate bungalow at the end of the garden. Private veranda with view over the valley, bathroom was much higher spec, decor in good condition. Away from house meant no WiFi, however. Overall I found the staff attentive and friendly, and the front desk staff speak good English. The à la carte food was excellent, and the restaurant itself (Earl’s Secret) appears to have quite a reputation locally. Breakfast buffet was limited although eggs, paratha etc are available on request. Coffee was a disappointment - super-weak Nescafé being the only option in a place of this calibre was puzzling! Staff were happy to bring me endless refills while I sat there until 10am each morning. Having fireplaces in every room is wonderful, maybe even one of the highlights, and actually necessary when it gets cold. I arrived at the start of December on a damp and rainy day and ended up sleeping in my fleece! "Bring warm clothes” is probably general advice for Ooty anyway. Apparently they’ll give you a hot-water bottle if you ask. They don’t have a liquor license because they only have 9 rooms (you need 10), but if you want a drink you can buy beers to take away from the Monarch hotel around the corner. Minor quibbles aside, this is in a great, peaceful location, lovely views (when it’s clear) and the house has a lot of character. Service was fine and food was great. I felt very comfortable and relaxed there, and I would go back again.
