A Great Hotel Right On The Beachfront”
We stayed at Kingfisher for 3 nights in August and wished I had booked longer there. Kingfisher Hotel ticks all the boxes. I read about the hotel on our visit there last year in Lonely Planet which had great reviews for the food. Even though we stayed at Thalpe we went there two times for dinner. The reviews were right, the jumbo king prawns and Thai red curry prawns are to die for. Absolutely delicious food. So when we went back to Sri Lanka this year I had to stay at this hotel. Just for the food. After reading fantastic reviews on Agoda and TA I booked in. Hotel only has 4 rooms which is great, makes you feel a little bit of a family, the guys really look after you. The staff are really great, we all had fun with them trying to teach us Sinhalese. The place has a nice cool, friendly vibe about it. The rooms are clean and comfortable with all that you need or want, with a nice view over the bay from the balcony. Location is spot on. Right on the beachfront, you just walk out front and there you are, in beautiful Unawatuna bay. Also very well located to nearby attractions, Galle Fort, Weligama bay, Mirissa and Matara. So if you're a surfer or a beachie, there's lots of little bays to explore. Overall it is a fantastic hotel. I would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to stay in Unawatuna, for a more low key, casual place to stay. We are going to Sri Lanka again next year and I am going to be booking into Kingfisher again.

Brilliant. A wonderful retreat.”
If you haven't been before, you need to get yourself to the Kingfisher Hotel at Unawatuna before this piece of South Sri Lankan paradise goes too commercial. We made a last minute decision to fly to Sri Lanka to escape the Singaporean haze to discover one of the best hotel experiences for sometime. The hotel has only 4 rooms - small even in boutique terms - but 4 lovely rooms. Well appointed with balconies that provide sweeping views of the iconic crescent bay of Unawatuna, these rooms are kept spotlessly clean and beautiful presented by an attentive staff. The restaurant is considered by many as the best on the beach and we would have to agree. Value for money and delicious flavors were found in every meal. There wasn't an extensive menu on offer when we visited but this is totally understandable considering it was off-season with very few people around. Off-season .. what a time to visit. The weather was a beautiful high 20s- early 30s. The water warm and inviting. By all accounts, Unawatuna is very busy November through February with good occupancy on the shoulder months.

Great stay in Unawatuna”
Satyed at Kingfisher Hotel for 4 nights with my partner. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The room was basic (but perfect for this type of hotel and setting) and clean. Bathroom has no door, which may cause some people an issue, but no issue for us. The bed is big and comfy. Nice big balcony facing out onto the sea (only 4 rooms here, opt for the top floor as it has better views. The hotel is right next to the beach, approx 100m from the sea. The setting of Unawatuna beach and cove is lovely, nice clean beach, calm sea, good crowd of people, watersports (cheap Jet Ski). The outside bar and restaurant on the beach is great. Wonderful yet simple food. Restaurant is always busy with outside patrons but the staff will always get you a table. 2 minor issues would be the towels are a bit hard (maybe how they are washed?) and the wi-fi signal wasnt great. But other than that, really pleased we choose Kingfisher. Had a great stay and looking forward to returning in the future.

Piece of Paradise”
we kept referring to kingfisher as our little piece of paradise. it was definitely one of, if not the best hotels on our sri lankan trip. unawatuna is a very special place and has a real surf, beach vibe to it - a little like byron bay in australia (we are australian). kingfisher topped our stay! from the moment you arrive in the beautifully designed open air foyer, to the direct beach access, to the beautifully appointed rooms, the spectacular views, friendly staff and hosts, delicious food to the perfect beach! everything was perfect. on our final night, one of the lovely staff members surprised us with a room romantically filled with perfectly positioned flowers on our bed and candles.....an absolute delight to come home to and such a representation of their service levels and commitment to guests. it really stands out as one of the best places i have stayed in all my years of travel. we are already planning a trip back in april 2013! a big shout out to all the amazing staff and hosts at kingfisher!!

A very nice hotel, but”
Kingfisher in itself is and could have been the perfect place to stay in Unawatuna. The room is nice (not taking into account the peculiarity that there was no door between the room and the bathroom, a neighbour standing close to our veranda could Actually see into the shower if they took a look into the room, we didn't bother), the veranda even better, but there is a but: music. Music from neighbours playing into the small hours. Most nights we managed to overhear it, but some nights it was Impossible. The staff was all of them very nice, friendly, attentive, serviceminded. Still I would like to mention Ranjith, who took care of our room, and made sure we had sunbeds every day, even if we were late out. He responded immediately to all our requests, always with a smile. To the management, make sure you keep him. As for Unawatuna beach, I am more divided. I love to swim, but with the boats going back and forth all the time, trying to catch customers ( and sending out stinking petrol fumes), I was afraid to swim. There is some waves, but not to bad. I recommend tuk tuk-driver D. Prosanna (had a dark pink tuk tuk). Reliable, nice and spoke quite good english.

great hotel, great position”
we loved our few days at Kingfisher. a lovely small (just four rooms) and beautifully-designed hotel right on unawatuna beach, with great bar & restaurant - the best food we had in unawatuna. the staff were lovely and helpful, room beautifully clean and a great size & layout. a bathroom curtain would be a welcome addition though! we would definitely stay here again.

Great hotel right on the beach!”
A friend recommended this hotel and we're so glad she did! Great, clean, 4-room hotel right on the beach with a great beachfront bar/restaurant and wonderful staff. We walked around and checked out some other hotel rooms on the Unawatuna beachfront, but none were as nice or as good a value as the Kingfisher, so we extended our stay here. Highly recommend it! The only things to note are that there's a loud party here on Saturday nights and there's no pool (but who needs one with the beach right there?!?) Highly recommend.

Really nice small hotel”

Techno Zentrum !!”
I would only recommend the Kingfisher Hotel to either deaf people or to people that are ok with going to sleep at 03:00 in the morning ! The hotel has a weekly saturday night party that goes on untill around three oclock am. The guests are mainly not hotel guests , as there are only four rooms. The neighboring resturant had parties on sunday and monday nights , so after three nights with no sleep , and us feeling like zombies the rest of the day , we requested to leave. The owners , descision makers where never seen at the hotel and the problem took an extra whole day to solve since everthing had to be relayed to the owner in Colombo. We were not able to get out of our contract , and were offered a room at their other property , at the Bamboo Garden in Unawatuna. So we ended up paying Kingfishers higher price , for a room with a garden view. The only reason we visited Unawatuna was because of the wonderfull description and photos we saw from Kingfisher hotel. I would not stay willingly in any other place in Unawatuna. So honestly , we believe that we were cheated and tricked . The Bamboo Garden was a fine property , a pleasant hotel with a quite atmosphere and I would recommend it... but there is no beach access or sea view . So you get what you pay for. We didnt. All the staff at both hotels were very helpfull and pleasant . The kingfisher staff sounded sincerely sympathetic to our problems , but didnt have the competence to make a descision regarding a solution. I reserved our stay through Agoda and called Agoda regarding our problem and your worker explained that it was up to the hotel to solve the issue. We wanted to leave Unawatuna since the Kingfisher Hotel could not offer us a good nights sleep and were more or less forced to stay in a more inferior hotel for the same price. We have worked hard and long to save up for our vacation and feel cheated. I would definitely not recommend Kingfisher to anybody with normal hearing and cannot really trust Agoda , sinc

Comfortable Stay; Courteous and Friendly Staff”
Received a warm welcome; our room was on the first floor and was neat and spacious. Though the view to the ocean and beach was semi obstructed by the trees, it did not disappoint us (the second floor rooms may have an unobstructed view; not sure). The staff is very friendly and have a smile ON always. The sea food was above average but was fresh for sure! Kingfisher has the best beach beds in Unawatuna Beach area. Overall it is recommended to stay at Kingfisher if one is visiting Unawatuna Beach.

great in every aspect”
we stayed a week at kingfisher and if we did't had a flight to catch, we would definitely even stay a couple days more. the location is perfectly set at the beach on the end of the down road, which has a lot of little shops and restaurants. which you would't have to look for restaurants, because the best food and service you get right at Kingfisher. the room was beautiful, big with a balcony facing the beach. all the staff is very helpful and charming. we were traveling with a 3 year old child and the staff looked after the child with care and playing lovingly. one night there was a party at the hotel until morning and we were offered to spend the night in another hotel just minutes away, but quiet. Thanks to the whole Kingfisher Family - we had a wonderful stay !

Perfect!”
The Kingfisher was the perfect place to end our trip in Sri Lanka! From the warm welcome, to the AMAZING room, the superb staff and the quality food, and then not to mention the ideal location right on the superb stretch of beach, this was truly the highlight of our stay in this beautiful country. Our first evening I arrived and fell sick right away (not from anything I ate here!) and couldn't make it for dinner. My husband had to go down for dinner by himself and the waiter was incredibly friendly and talkative to him, and gave him bread to bring up to me (which was amazing and fresh!) We spent two more days there and the staff were a perfect mix of friendly and professional(we had spent our two weeks in Sri Lanka in a mix of accommodation and nobody could get the service quite right - until we came here!) The food was absolutely amazing and we were excited to eat every meal there because there was too many good options to try! (Note -it's not Sri Lankan food, but after travelling Asia for 6 weeks we were quite happy for non curries). The Kingfisher is also located at the best end of the beach with lots of sand (some of the beach is further down is disappearing). We spent our days on the beach loungers which are free if you stay at the hotel. Room was very clean (and cleaned every day). Bathroom is open which didn't bother us at all but I guess may not be cool with everyone. Special thanks to Sudesh and Kasun who were among the amazing staff who made our stay unforgettable. We left wishing we could stay there forever! I honestly can't think of anything to fault this place, and it was cheaper than other places we stayed which were not as great! PERFECT!

Perfect”
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Kingfisher Hotel at the end of a recent trip to Sri Lanka. We splurged a bit, and it was well worth it. This small hotel (there are only 4 rooms) is amazing. They each have a private balcony, the rooms are so nice (if a bit spartan). And the service and staff are amazing! We don't usually eat at the hotel we stay at but the food at this hotel is great! And really, it's a pretty good deal. Even if you don't stay at the hotel, make sure you eat here.

Lovely place to stay!”
We were at the Kingfisher hotel for 6 days from Feb 19-25, 2016 - let me just saw how wonderful our experience was!! The hotel has four rooms, our room was on the top floor, with a great view of the beach. The room was very comfortable, plenty of space for us to spread out in, also a small safe is in the room so you can store your personal items (passports, cash, etc.) if you need to. The staff was awesome! Very helpful in helping us arrange transportation and sending us in the right direction when we were looking for things, and if we were just hanging on the beach for the day, the staff made sure sun beds and fresh towels were reserved for us. Food and drinks were really great too! Really can't say enough great things about this place! I would definitely stay here again!

Good location, nice rooms”
Situated above what is widely considered the best restaraunt in Unawatuna, the hotel seems like somewhat of an afterthough with only 4 rooms. There is also a small beach front bar but it was not rowdy or loud in the time we were there. The rooms are new and nicely appointed although a little on the sterile side. The shower & bathroom are luxurious but the lack of door between the rooms can be a little disconcerting. It is right on the water with a nice beach for lounging, but there are rocks in the water so it is not the best place for swimming. All in all a pleasant stay - you won't be dissapointed.

Great Place, warm staff lovely view & amazing food”
if your are the type that prefers a smaller set up rather than a large resort, kingfisher is the choice for you. located right on the unuwatune beach, kingfisher is a small set up with 4 rooms, a bar on the beach. rooms are large, clean, vibrant and airy with an amazing view of the the beach. food at kingfisher is just beautiful, flavorful and most of served with a smile and the staff is very accommodating. it was probably the best food i had on my whole 6 day vacation in sri lanka. the guy who owns the place is warm around during the evening and mingles with the guest and just makes you feel really welcomed. i would most surely go back again. thank you kingfisher for a great stay

Good spot for relaxation”
The location of the KingFisher hotel is almost perfect. If you can snag one of the right side rooms facing the beach on either the second or third floor (we didn't, we go the left side room on the second floor) it would be spectacular since you'd also have an amazing view. Even with out that, the stay was amazing with good food, great staff, and perfect central location that you can walk the entire beach from. We had a great last 3 days of our honeymoon there. If you looking for something with North American like standards this is the place to be. There are certainly cheaper places but for what were looking for at the end of our 3.5 week vacation it was perfect.

Perfect hotel for beach holiday”
As our main purpose was to chill on the beach, the Kingfisher was perfect for our stay in Unawatuna. Staff is very friendly, but service can be slow.

The best!!”
We absolutely loved our stay at the Kingfisher hotel. Cannot praise the hard working staff enough. Everyone is so friendly and accommodating. The restaurant obviously has its own very good reputation with it being busy during lunch and reservations a must for dinner. Being a guest in one of only 4 rooms, you are made to feel like one of the family and no request is too much. My wife and I can't recommend Kingfisher enough and certainly hope to be back there one day.
