Good place to relax”
We booked near riverside view and it’s so relaxing to watch the river flows. Plus the dinner and breakfast included are the best. I highly recommended it to get away vacation from solo, couple or family together .

Lovely suite with private onsen bath”
I stayed one night in the corner suite with private onsen bath and a view of the little river next to the hotel. It was lovely, the room was well-appointed with comfortable beds and a massage chair. A small couch facing a large flat screen TV completed the room. Shower conveniently located next to the balcony window onsen bath, and the WC was also clean and modern, located next to the suite's front door. There were amenities like a tea kettle, shampoos/soaps, and a hairdryer. I did not attempt to use the WiFi while I was there, so I am not sure if that worked, but there was good cell reception for major carriers. I also did not eat in the hotel restaurants, but the common spaces were very nice, typical of a hotel from its era (built 1964 and renovated in 2004, I think). A small arcade had some video games from the 1990s, billiards and table tennis, plus some claw-game machines. It was an absolutely lovely stay for anyone who wants comfort, but doesn't need a "modern" feel. Staff were very helpful, and there is a shuttle from the nearest station that costs 190 JPY one-way, but it is also walkable. I would stay here again if I ever came back to Nikko/Kinugawa. 9/10

Moderately budgeted onsen hotel”
The location of the hotel from the station is pretty far. I got off at the kinugawa onsen station and it's a 17mim walk because google maps wasn't showing any transportation for us to use to get there. I'm sure there was one as there were buses near the station just couldn't bother to seek it because of language barrier. It was a nice walk anyways as I saw many nice little restaurants, sceneries and cool art. I read a previous review just before coming and was scared to see if it was true about the mold but it wasn't that bad. Overall the place was very tidy. The bricks on the outside are moldy but you don't see that very much. The front doors look newly built and nice. I also read another review saying this place doesn't allow tattoos for onsen unless it's for private room ones but when we asked the staff if it was they said you can use it if there are a few guests in the onsen. I recommend going at midnight or 11pm to see less people. Room thermostat says AC but is actually the heat.

...it was a nicer hotel in the 80’s i guess. ”
lovely traditional japanese hotel & relatively good value for money but passed its glory days. it’s beautifully situated, nice views from the room but not as accessible to the Kinugawa town but with a short bus ride needs some freshening up (paint the walls? change light bulbs? newer futons?), maybe wifi in the rooms (optional) and maybe hire or have a staff with some basic english for non-japanese clients. overall not a bad experience either just perhaps for the same price or ill pay a but more to get a better hotel.

Not foreigner friendly ”
The Wi-Fi was a complete lie! (only availablein the lobby, but read on it gets worse... They do have it technically so they can advertise it. You can log on. Buuuuuuut, the router isnt connected to the modem. I asked them to connect it and they said they can't. I got politely upset about it and they said sorry we aren't supposed to connect it. They said sorry over 100 times and said they were embarrassed. One worker told me she has to go through this embarrassment daily. There isn't any cell phone service up the canyon so GOOD LUCK!

Nice ryokan ”
We took a special one night trip to use the private onsen you can reserve with the hotel due to having tattoos. This hotel was a nice older style hotel/ryokan. Staff knew very little English, but still very friendly. Room was nice with a beautiful view of the river. Breakfast was okay. Shuttle service to the Kinugawaonsen train station (and vise versa) is available but you must go to the front desk to make a reservation. It is not free. You pay about 190¥ one way. There were a lot of guests when we were there. Seems like a lot of business men and couples. They have a free public onsen and also private for a fee. There are two different types of private onsen rooms. We went with the pricier room. It was a 15 minute drive from the hotel which they provided free shuttle service.

Quite lovely”
The town is beautiful and the room is really nice. The onsen inside the hotel and the detached onsen are both really nice. It's worth paying the fee for the garden onsen if you prefer privacy or have tattoos. I really don't have many complaints other than I wish we could have opened a window in our room for a bit of fresh air.

Nice hotel with nice onsen pool with great view”
Located in between Kinugawaonsen train station and Kinugawakoen train station, either way you have to walk 25 to 30 minutes to reach hotel. It was freezing cold walking outdoor with strong wind during my stay. However, the room is tatami style and the room is spacious, luckily I've got the room view nice river view. I like the big onsen in the hotel and especially there is a massage chair free for use. Onsen is nice to go every night after long distance walk during the day.

Good”
The place seems older and tired. Next time I would try one just up the street. Also, for those who may like to venture out for dinner, the town shuts down and closes up in the afternoon. Few to no dining options other than your hotel are available. Also, no tattoos allowed in this hotel’s onsen. You can use the private one down the street but it’s roughly $30/hr. Also, staff speaks very little English here if that’s an issue for you.

Stay in hotel”
its just a place if u wana just stay in and not move around.Awefully troublesome far if u wana travel far out to the nearest station unless u prepared for a 20min plus walk (not exagerrating) .Shops closes at 4 pm around that area .u either stock up ur food and eat in the room or be out 1.5 hours travelling time to places of interest .last bus back to the hotel from the main train station is 7pm . so when u come back from tourist attractions .Be prepared to walk a very long dark street without lights and almost no one to be seen. PS : i didnt do my homework this time round and booked blindy (which is my fault) but comments are given to my honest encounter.

Overpriced”
We booked a triple room with a private onsen bath at the balcony, the room is big equipped with twin beds? and a spacious sitting room. The massage chair is also a big plus after a long day. After check-in, we explore our room and found the bed sheets were dirty. Some people's hair are all over the blanket and sheets and that was gross! We rang the front desk for a change but they don't quiet understand English and it took quite a while to communicate. Also the drinks selling at the vending machine inside the hotel is double the price of the vending machines right outside the hotel. We found out after we bought quite a bunch of water. (There are no complimentary water inside the room)

Disappointing stay ”
First I would like to compliment that the private onsen in this hotel is great. However everything else was basically very disappointing. I was most disappointed by the rude service in this hotel. we arrived before 3pm on that day, when checking with the staff re timing for private onsen and local tourist attractions, She was rude and did not reply our questions, instead she coldly asked us to come back after 3pm for check in. Dinner was ok. Private onsen after dinner was fantastic. we wanted to enjoy tea time in our room at night, to our horror most of the tea cups are not clean. We can see residual stains from previous use. I have to personally clean the cups a few times before using them. At night we realised that the toiletries provided by the hotel were not enough hence I went down to request some. The counter staff only provided me one sachet despite telling him that I would like to have 2. Overall this is a very disappointing stay!

No carpark at the hotel, staff will guide you park at a carpark far from the hotel, but will take you back to the hotel by shuttle. Also have to take shuttle to a restaurant far away for dinner. Onsen was fair.
