This former World War II base and school is quietly located on the edge of Kirkwall. Each private room has access to shared bathroom facilities. Guests have use of laundry facilities and a large drying room. Kirkwall Youth Hostel offers a well equipped kitchen, for guests to prepare meals. The surrounding area offers a wide range of restaurants and pubs. Orkney offers many historic sites and attractions, including Skara Brae, Maes Howe, and the Ring of Brodgar. The historic Scapa Flow is just 1 mile from the Kirkwall Youth Hostel. Guests can enjoy ferry trips to the Northern Isles from Kirkwall Harbour.

Guests are required to show a photo identification and credit card upon check-in. Please note that all Special Requests are subject to availability and additional charges may apply. Full payment for all bookings will be charged at the time of booking. All major credit & debit cards are accepted excluding American Express. All bookings will include a temporary membership fee per person per night. (Full, existing members of Hostelling Scotland and HI using these channels are not entitled to a membership refund). Individual reservations (Up to 9 persons) - can cancel free of charge until 3 days before the arrival date. If cancelled within the 3 days before the arrival 100 percent of the total price will be charged. Groups reservations (more than 9 persons) - different policies and additional supplements will apply. More than 8 weeks (57 days or more) 20% of total cost. 8 – 4 weeks (56- 29 days) 55% of total cost. 4 – 0 weeks (28 - 0 day) 100% of total cost. No stag or hen parties are permitted at any youth hostel. Should guests be entitled to a refund or part refund please note that these are processed by Hostelling Scotland National Office, Stirling. It may take 7 to 10 working days from the date of cancellation request for the refund to be processed back onto the original card used. From the age of 12 to 15 years, young people must be accompanied by a parent or guardian of the same gender when booking a bed within shared accommodation (Please note that due to demand at this location shared accommodation can be unisex). Parties with young children (under 5 years) will only be accommodated in private rooms, where available Hostelling Scotland advise that additional notice be given to the destination youth hostel when travelling with children, to ensure that suitable accommodation is available. It is hard to leave a rating at this time because the Hostel has been shut for two years. I think things will get better as the season progresses.

Basic but bad”
The staff are delightful , but the Hostels Association needs to invest some serious money on maintenance, upgrading plumbing, taking stained sheets out of circulation, and modernising room door locks. The doors cannot be prevented from slamming, which is a problem when people need to use the communal toilets during the night.

Clean hostel”
The hostel is clean. Staff are very helpful. However, the place is a bit difficult to find. It just got a tiny sign show u the alley to the hostel. And, be aware of the chickens in the parking lot. They are not afraid of cars and always standing in the middle of the drive way.
