      Mysterious and exceptional
We were not sure what to expect, but the entire experience was wonderful...literally 'wonder-full". Clean as a whistle! Food was excellent! Service impeccable! Excitement and calmness simultaneously... We would return in a heartbeat!

      Unique experience but pricey
Wonderful traditional Japanese style B&B experience with a Buddhist flair. The grounds are beautiful and the we got great service by a friendly staff that spoke respectable English. The vegetarian food was really quite tasty (my teen boys weren't as agreeable though) and a cool experience. The highlight was the fire ceremony. Koyasan is an amazing place, so it was a truly unique experience to stay within the grounds of an active Buddhist monastery that is a short walking distance from the old cemetery pathway. That said, it was very pricy for what you get. Not something I would recommend for more than one night. Honestly, for the price I would suggest considering spending the money on a ryokan in Kyoto or Nara where there are more things to see and do nearby. More private as well, depending on the Ryokan.

Beautiful traditional setting with many things to do
An atmospheric space with a lovely garden very close to the graveyard. I thought we’d have more than enough time to see everything, but if you arrive in the afternoon and do the meditation, the night walk and then see the graveyard again in the morning then you don’t have much time for the other temples (the graveyard is massive). Being at Koya is like being on an island so you’re somewhat at the mercy of the infrequent public transport. Koya is one of my favourite places in Japan. I loved Eko-in. The morning meditation and fire ritual were beautiful and moving. The night walk was very fun and the monk who led it was funny and a good story teller. One night was exactly right for us to get the flavour (as it’s a bit pricy compared to the other places we stayed in Japan) but it’s absolutely worth it.

      Must have experience
      > very accommodating staff > great balance between old and new. spacious rooms which take you back to a different time but with the comforts of a modern home > great location for trips to the cemetery (which we also highly recommend). within five minutes on foot. the temple also hosts the night tours (be sure to join this too!) > excellent food > great value for money this (both koyasan and ekoin itself) was, and still is, the highlight of our stay in japan

      Nice temple in the mountains
Food was interesting and delicious, staff was nice and the room was excellent. Bath was also great although we had to walk outside to get to it and it is public, which might be off putting to people who aren't used to it.

      Fantastic experience
Our stay here was beyond amazing! We were greeted by the monks of this temple who went above and beyond in their efforts to help us. The room we stayed in was magnificent, such a lovely view and with access to all modern facilities such as toto toilets and wifi and tv! They also offer insight into their rituals in the early morning which were one of the highlights of our stay in Koyasan. Thank you so much for your hospitality and kindness!

Beautiful location evenin the snow and cold
Our experience of this monastery and its ceremonies was one of such dignity mystery and interest The monks kept us warmin our traditional rooms and the onsen style bath was a pleasure with the snow outside Good vegetarian food In the spring and summer there is good walking around the valley above the temples Away from the world and magical

      Great temple stay experience!
It rained so we didn't get to go on the cemetery tour to okunoin but stay was still great as we got to experience the temple lifestyle. Plus temple was beautiful and rooms were large and clean!
