Real China experience
Hotel is in a city village, so very primitive. You get what you pay for. Airport transfer is free, no English though. On the way to the airport they squashed 18 people plus luggage in a 9 seater van! Was fine for one short night.

Cold and creepy
I stayed here for my 14 hour layover. I was able to get picked up from the airport which was nice, but I had airport staff ( information desk) contact them in order to do so. I came in January so china was super cold, including the hotel. You could literally see your breath indoors. The vibe reminds me a bit of a horror film. Dimmley lit every where, winding corridors and cold!! The staff doesn't speak English, but one gentleman was very sweet and trying to be helpful, with my room issues of no hot water or wifi. The gentleman after several attempts of coming to my room was able to get the wifi working. But not the hot water. My room was located at the furthest end of the hotel. It's not heated, and the room was a bit disheveled. The beds and sheets were clean (they also have an electric blanket which was the best thing) however the bathroom toilet had poop stains in it. The hot water came on in the morning and the hotel offers you a free ride to the airport which is nice.

good only for a night stay
This hotel has electric heaters under the sheets and if you use them it will help keep you warm. It has a good shuttle back and forth to the airport - although they cram it pretty full sometimes. This van back and forth comes with the room so that is a big value. The staff does not speak much English and isn't the most polite but it is a decent place to stay near the airport. You may have to ask for your complimentary bottles of water like we did. There is a water kettle in the room but you need to bring your own tea/coffee. We were just there in late December and it was really cold in the room but once we saw the bed warmers and turned them on it was fine. For a cheap alternative to sleeping in the airport this isn't the worst option. It is a very basic hotel.

Convenient for an overnight layover in Kunming
Convenient cheap option for an overnight layover in Kunming. Room was clean but found a cigarette butt on in the floor next to the bed. Other than than the room and the beds were very clean. The toilet was clean but every time the toilet was flushed it would let out a foul smell - perhaps it was blocked. Wifi didn't work. Staff were polite. Hotel offers pick up and drop to airport. Only issue on the drop off to the airport they stuffed about 15 of us into a single 10 seater van. There's a train line nearby and trains pass through the night horns blaring. All in all for a night, a clean comfortable bed and polite service was just fine and definitely beats a bench at the airport.

Not so good
Near the airport but access is poor. Meant a traffic jam of over an hour, which would have been more of a nightmare if I did not have plenty of time before my flight.

Good Stay at Tian Rui
convenient location; helpful staff; slept well
When booking, I indicated my flight and arrival time. I was surprised when hotel staff greeted me at the Kunming airport with a sign with my name on it. They took me to the hotel. Although they didn't speak English, they would talk into their smart phone and it would translate their message into written English script on the phone. When I spoke, I spoke into their phone and it would translate into Chinese. How clever. Since I had an early flight the next morning, I arranged for a wake up call, and someone actually pounded on my door to wake me. They arranged a free shuttle back to the airport. Other reviews are accurate. The wallpaper in the room is peeling and the hallways were dirty. My room was clean and comfortable. It was perfectly acceptable for a transit stop. There were restaurants and street food within walking distance, at least up to 9 pm. The hotel did not serve food. I'm glad I chose this place.

Only good thing is close to airport
Close to airport, free shuttle to airport
The hotel is very old, no elevator, many stairs, hallways, could be difficult if a fire occurred. Located down side street, almost like an alley. Had to use what little Chinese I know to figure out how to call hotel from airport to be picked up. It is very close to airport and it is very cheap, but, I didn't feel comfortable staying and cleanliness concerns. Brought my own food for breakfast.

Run-down hotel with friendly staff.
staff, close to airport, airport shuttle available
Close to the airport, but the location is hard to find. Local taxi driver had a hard time getting us there. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Can't say much as we stayed only in between our flight to and from Kunming Airport.
