“Disappointing after 10 years”
I stayed at this charming hotel exactly 10 years ago in August, when the property was just renovated and opened under a different name. My family of 6 people stayed at 3 suite rooms with balconies overlooking the courtyard. It was such a wonderful experience at the time and I wanted to come back to this hotel. However, it is now part of the Hilton Curio group and the hotel was disappointing on a few accounts. First, we stayed at a superior twin room which was spacious enough for two short nights. The room had heavy smell of cigarette smoke. We complained and they said the smoke was from downstairs. It did not disappear for two days because the carpet and drapes were also not clean anyhow. The hotel asked us to change the room but we did not want to bother after we unpacked. And there is no guarantee the other room was any better. They never bothered it was okay at the end. In addition, the room was really running down - hotel maintenance could have done some easy touch up works here and there which were never done (including elevators). Wondering carpets were regularly cleaned thoroughly and professionally. Second, the comforter was too thick and heavy for summer even with air conditioners and we both were waking up at night. Did not get good sleep at all during two night. Some common sense can be used for summer time comforters. Third, hotel staff especially upon check/in time could be more service oriented and give necessary info for guests. We asked one staff about restaurants and she basically said you can find it on the street. She never offered to make a reservation for us, which is what you expect in other 5 star hotels. Moreover, in this town, you cannot easily eat at popular restaurants unless you book in advance. We went several restaurants and they just turned you away unless you had reservations, even if there are available tables. They don’t try to accommodate you at all and they operate below full occupancy. Very strange practice in this town. Except one place, these restaurants are very snobbish, saying “no reservation no tables” - not even sorry. So we decided just to eat at hotel. But even at the hotel you have to book for dinner - we were lucky enough to get a table in our own hotel at 8pm. We were hungry so we wanted to have some snack before full dinner but they would not let you sit at all before your booking time. We were so annoyed because hotel restaurants should be able to accommodate your own guests at any time, especially when outside options are limited and when many tables are free. The food was good so it was a relief at least with dinner. We have been traveling a lot for our work and leisure and accustomed to 5-star hotel services around the world (including Tokyo and Osaka). Somehow, small towns in Japan - even in Karuizawa - do not have the same international standards service mind set as in other comparable hotels. Or it has deteriorated over time. In short, the hotel’s reception staff could have a better service orientation and the hotel needs better maintenance. It was beginning to feel like a run down hotel, even with a charming courtyard. However, some service staff were nice and the restaurant staff and shuttle drivers were very good and professional.
