          Perfect!”
This place is just perfect! Idyllic. The staff are exceptionally kind (when my wife fell off her bike and needed to go to hospital) two of them came with us. The chalets all have a view of the river. Beautiful pool. Great food. WiFi a bit iffy. We stayed 5 days and could have stayed a lifetime!

A lovely view of the mountains and the Mekong”
This is a lovely island and tourism has touched it lightly. The local community is being helped by the income from la Folie Lodge. Champasak is ten minutes away by boat across the river. We enjoyed a tranquil and quietly inspiring short stay.

          Excellent Room and Restaurant”
Because the hotel is on an island it is somewhat more complicated to access than usual. This can be good or bad depending on how much you value privacy and a quiet environment. The room, the restaurant, and the staff are all top-notch. However, there are a couple of issues of which one should be aware. There was no television nor a refrigerator in the room. For me the lack of a television is a non-issue. As I am on vacation I do not want to see and hear about the outside world. Not on a television, not on a computer, and not on any mobile devices. I am there to relax and that's exactly what I do. As for the refrigerator, it would have been nice to have cold drinks in the room, but maybe I've just become spoiled over the years. By the way, now that I am back home all the societal turmoil I avoided while on vacation is still here in abundance. All I can say is that I did not miss a thing.

Beautiful lodge with nice garden ”
We stayed a river view room. The room itself was not really large but enough space for bathroom. We could relax at the pool side and they also had some places for guests to sit and relax. It would be nicer if they had ceiling fan at balcony.

Very beautiful grounds and restaurant. Nice pool with Mekong view. Frangipani scent in the garden. Very attentive and friendly staff. Food is quite expensive. Free boat shuttle to main land and back! Restaurant: Try the steamed fish in banana leaf and the chocolate fondant for desert - delicious! Best hotel service by far of our laos trip!

          Mekong Mecca”
This is a great little resort located along the Mekong river. It is one of the finest hotels of its type in Laos. This river island resort is accessed by boat and is secluded, quiet, and secure. A menu of western and local dishes. The swimming pool is clean and the rooms fresh and cool. The only slight drawback is the insects, which are drawn to the lights at night. The pool could use a little added cold water, although it was very nice.

          Utterly charming”
From the moment I was handed down onto the barge and handed an umbrella I thought this would be a special stay. Arriving on the La Folie side of the river I was loaded into a tractor cart and driven up the woven bamboo path to the entrance. And from then it was delight after delight, a couple of little glitches handled quickly and well by the terrific management staff. The views from my room, the pool and the restaurant are beautiful, especially at dawn and dusk. The rooms are wooden lined with verandah, set far enough apart for privacy. Delicious!

Charming island feeling in the midst of Mekong river”
Well-run and peaceful hideaway with a touch of France in a beautiful arbored garden, far away from traffic, since there are no cars on the island. The wooden cottages on stilts have a slightly primitive look and feel. The view over the broad river with pasturing cattle is fascinating, especially at sunset. Staff is hearty and markedly attentive though only a few is able to make themselves understood in english. Some compromises in comfort are necessary concerning size and handling of shower cubicle, lack of a mosquito net as well as a refrigerator and a fan on the terrace in front of the room which is very hot in the afternoon.

A relaxing few days at La Folie Lodge”
Having spent a hectic 12 days touring Burma, La Folie Lodge on Don Daeng Island was the perfect place to relax and unwind. I have just returned from five days here with a friend and my son and daughter-in-law. We flew from Bangkok to Pakse and took a taxi to the ferry terminal at Champesek where the hotel's motorised raft was waiting to take us on the ten minute crossing to the island. It was very romantic crossing after dark seated on rattan chairs. The Lodge is situated on the banks of the Mekong river and all the bedrooms have river views. The rooms are rustic in design and simply furnished but all comforts were catered for and the rooms were spotlessly clean. The dining and seating area was open to the attractive gardens and overlooked the pool. The restaurant served a good choice of both Laos and European food which was delicious. The staff were all charming. What I particularly liked was that the hotel was set up as a community development initiative and provides employment for around 50 people. Guests are invited to contribute to a continuing programme of projects including refurbishment of local schools and the dispensary and medical centre. We borrowed bikes from the hotel and as we travelled round the island were met by the friendliest people shouting "sabaydee". The children were delightful and so carefree and happy with their simple lives, a far cry from the materialistic West. We visited the ancient remains of Vat Phou which were fascinating and not busy. All in all it was a great holiday.

          Extraordinary location, so-so service”
The location is wonderful. The standard rooms (garden view) are just ok and you can ear EVERYTHING from your neighbors. Service is chaotic but pleasant. Not sure if there is really a manager in this days. Staff is nice and does his best which sometimes is not enough. Prices are ridiculously expensive, they are after your money. Good breakfast. Talented chef. Many dishes, including daily specials, not available

          Outdated and overrated ”
          location, swimming pool, bikes available
Maybe our expectations were too high of our stay, but we found the hotel needs to be updated to meet modern standards. We stayed in the Residence, which was far overrated, comparing to many places we have stayed before. Decoration was very weird, 1 aircon not working, no pillows on the chairs outside, we had the feeling that it wasn't used for a long time. The restaurant was OK, but also far overpriced. We had breakfast in the residence, but I think we could have better had it in the restaurant. We liked the place though, peaceful (although a lot of local noise) and very nice to have a bike trip around the island. Also the 'ferry' which brings you to the island is great!

Peaceful stunningly beautiful gem of a place”
The tranquility of La Folie, gentle pace and natural beauty of Don Daeng are mesmerising. Perfect spot to recharge, appreciate good attentive service from kind helpful staff. Natural surroundings
I loved the natural beauty and peace. The staff are helpful and seem genuinely concerned that guests are happy. The assistant manageress Sarah is exemplary, nothing is too much trouble for her and her kindness was exceptional. It was a wonderful relaxing break. Most guests were couples, middle to older aged, from Europe. Almost all seemed as blissed out as we were. There is no entertainment, so not ideal for younger children or couples looking to party. One couple disliked the insects in the restaurant, however this is totally normal in open sided restaurants on islands in S-E Asia. A few moths, geckos and grasshoppers are harmless and part of the ecological experience. Arriving by boat makes the island experience fun, and the villagers all over Don Daeng were universally friendly and charming. I feel very lucky to have experienced this unspoilt gem in Laos.
