Me and my partner stayed here for 8 days. We had the best time in Chiang Mai. All our tours were sorted by the lovely lady at Lai Thai guesthouse. The pool was perfect for hot days, one side in the shade and one side in the sun. Rooms were cleaned daily and fresh towels were provided. The location was perfect!
Looking at the place from the street tells one story, staying at this place inside the walls is anot”
Lovely landscaped property with a cold pool, smokers delight, smokers all around the pool , smokers sitting in the eating area. Bathrooms are very grunge, ceiling mold. The beds are old and tell many stories. The tv is from the 70s, be very cautious of the advertised discounts. It’s a scam. This place is a 300 baht max. Do not give them any money upfront. Show up and check it out first. Agoda also should be responsible for false advertising. I have no idea who or if ever anyone ever paid 5 or 600 baht for this place. You would think they would close down 30 rooms and renovate them then do another 20-30 ? I wanted a shower getting up and was told to turn water on for 10 minutes then have a shower ?
An oldie but a goodie!”
Lai Thai has character. It reminds me of a happier decade, say the 1950’s or 1960’s, and could just as easily be located in Honolulu. To be clear, the hotel is very old.. and large, for that matter.. but it’s been maintained with love, if not much in the way of upgrades. The floors creak, the telephone, tv and refrigerator are 40-50 years old. The electric wiring is clearly a fire hazard.. but all of this just adds to the charm. Despite these things, it’s clean, comfortable and safe. The staff are usually very kind and helpful. And at 750 Baht per night, it’s a bargain. Did I mention there’s a swimming pool and a restaurant on site? Or that you are ideally located between the Old City, Ping River and Loi Kroh Road nightlife? For four days and nights, I felt like a pretty wealthy guy. That doesn’t happen back home. Thanks Lai Thai!
Ticks all the boxes ”
It was what I needed. Pool, central location near restaurants and shops. Hot shower and good bed. Be aware the rooms only have double pin sockets but if you ask reception they will point you to a three pin plug down there. Also Jane is very good at sorting tours if you need them.
Comfortable and inexpensive.”
Pros. As noted in review above. Cons. The women at the front desk and breakfast waitress were both nasty tempered and very terse when we were checking in or ordering meals. Where were the famous THAI SMILES we read about?!
Great place buuuuut....”
This place is beautiful and in an AWESOME location, however their windows in their rooms caused many problems. Rather than traditional windows they have glass shudders in their rooms, which means no insulation and no noise barrier from the outside world since they don't seal. One of the reasons I booked this place was for AC, and I barely could tell the difference between the hallway and my room even with it on full blast, and there was a construction site RIGHT outside my window, so I couldn't sleep in a single day. I'm a teacher in Thailand so that was KIND OF A BUMMER. I would make sure that if you book this hotel, you make sure no construction is going on behind the building lol.
The Lai Thai is friendly with an exceptional pool for the type of accommodation. Located just beside the old town canal within easy reach of the night market and the Sunday markets. The pool catches the sun for most of the day. This is a jewel in Chiang Mai.
Great facilities poor reception and reaturant staff”
Was a great wee hotel, dont think it was value for money though we had to move rooms four times to get decent air conditioning, the staff at front desk wernt that nice neither was the resturant staff, cleaning staff were nice and the pool was awesome after first being disspointed because of price i grow to like the place, dont think i would go back though
Firstly I'd like to say it's a good value hotel. Would I stay there again, probably not and this was only because the whole place stunk of cigarette smoke, even in the rooms, it felt like someone was smoking inside with us. Another reason why I wouldn't stay again was that the pool was seriously small and you would be lucky if you could get a place to sit as it was so packed out. If you need 1x nights rest it's good value, anymore time than this would be foolish!
good for the price”
Not the first time I've stayed here nice little guest house cheap and cheerful rooms small but cozy mattress and pillows firm to say the least mini bar good restaurant I used a number of times and had no complaints in fact the only complaint was there was some construction going on at the back but that was during the day. The pool is great.
Two of us backpackers wanted nothing special, just a pool and a nice sorrounding. The hotel was very old and the room super basic. AC worked, but the place needs to be fixed up. The pool mush smaler in reality than in the pictures, but big enough. Onky half of the pool is in the sun. Overall very basic hotel, a little bit oberpriced in my opinion. If you are lookning for a ok pool and nothig else this is the place for you. The personel not very keen to help. Wifi did not work in the rooms.
Good location for Sunday market traveling.
Great location, very good amenities as it had a nice pool. The staff were hit and miss though, one lady found it very hard to acknowledge you never smiled and just did what she needed to without even talking. If you can’t smile and say hi, don’t work in the tourism industry. Otherwise not to bad.
Great location, lovely pool area, clean rooms (we got an air con room and the aircon worked great). Can’t fault the place. It was really something special to have such a nice outdoor pool area in such a central location.
Great location, great pool but noisy and bright”
Location was great, short walk from to shops and restaurants. 10 min drive to airport. Swimming pool was good . Now for the bad bits. We had a deluxe room which was near the pool so at night (1am - 2am) when people are getting back from there nights out don't expect to sleep as the walls are paper thin. Also the aircon worked but it was so noisy there was chance we was sleeping with it on. Also the wifi worked but was intermittent. Ofcourse another room could be better
Very thin walls”
Walls are incredibly thin, could hear doors shutting and people moving. When checking out we were asked to pay 200 baht for a mark my top left on a pillow. Pool was nice, location was good, bed was comfty and room was very basic but did the job.
Great hotel with great staff!”
The hotel/facilities is nice and bright, not dingy at all. The lobby and dining area is right in front, open and clean. Staff is nice and helpful. One thing about being on the 1st floor though is you have noisy folks who do not respect the time and were noisy even at and after midnight. The hotel should enforce quiet hours.
Looks good on the front view, but the guesthouse need a renovation”
We booked a Deluxe room, but there was nothing deluxe on it. A very old room completely at the back of the hotel. There wasn’t even a full roll of toilet paper on the holder and no spare in the room. For 19€ it was not expensive; no breakfast included. But we will not go back no more.
Our favourite place to stay in Chiang Mai”
My partner and I have stayed at Lai Thai previously and love the convenient location, value for money and welcoming staff. It may not have the glamour of nearby modern hotels but it abounds with Thai charm and atmosphere.
Good place just next to old town + nice pool.”
We took the deluxe room with the nice Thai furniture. The place is just near the old town of Chaing Mai, by the ring round (which is quite noisy). Everything is available by walking distance. The outside pool is just great after a busy day. The hotel restaurant is not the best though. I would definitely recommend this hotel. Good price/value balance.
