The rooms were great, and I really appreciated the privacy they provided. We also enjoyed the shared bathroom and kitchen, which were both well-equipped and clean. However, the reception is in a separate building, which led to a bit of confusion. In our rush to leave, we accidentally forgot to return the key. We didn’t notice a drop-off box near the rooms, but perhaps we missed it (we weren't given any briefing on it, if there was one). On the day of check-out, our morning started off stressful due to an issue with our rental car, and we needed to drive to Christchurch quickly. We called the reception to inform them that we had forgotten the key, and they kindly told us we could mail it back. Since we were tourists and had never mailed anything before, we asked a gas station employee for assistance. She told us to drop the key in the post box, which we did. When I called the reception to confirm, I was shocked by the response. The staff member angrily said, "What do you mean dropped it off? Of course, you have to pay for it to be sent," in a high, angry condescending tone. While I understand the frustration of the situation, I didn’t appreciate being shouted at. The reception staff were otherwise friendly, but I think the stress of the situation affected their response. I hope they can understand that we were tourists from another country and didn’t know the proper procedure. After contacting the NZ Post branch, they confirmed they would still be able to send the key back, although I'm not certain it was ever received. It would be really helpful if the hotel could provide clearer instructions for situations like this, especially since the reception is in a separate building. It would also be great if there was a drop-off box near the rooms or a reminder about the process at check-in to avoid any confusion.

The overall experience was ok. We appreciate that it is a backpacker's lodge so we can't really expect too much. The facilities provided were satisfactory, although there is room for improvement. The bunk beds were way too low (you can't really sit on the lower bed without substantially tilting your head) and the room looks like it needs a bit of deep cleaning. Other than that, all good with me. The location was great, with great view of and easy access to the lake. The staff at the reception area was friendly and accommodating.
