Sitting in the shadows of Ely Cathedral, Lamb Hotel dates back to the 15th century and retains its atmosphere as a thriving coaching inn.
The Lamb boasts 31 comfortable en-suite rooms. Meals and drinks are served all day in the bar and restaurant. Traditional beers, wines, spirits and teas and coffees are available.
The Lamb Hotel's history dates back to the time of King Richard II. Ely has old streets and medieval gateways, timbered houses and parkland stretching down to the River Great Ouse.
Cambridge is nearby, and Newmarket, famous for horse racing, is 19 km away.

Best hotel in Ely”
Location, atmosphere, breakfast
I used to live close to Ely and always felt the The Lamb reflected Ely's character of old, quiet, but distinguished. It was one of those places I promised myself I would stay in the future if ever I visited the city as an outsider; these days I live in Japan but having family around Ely I visit there once a year and the The Lamb is my hotel of choice.
The hotel's best point is its location in the center of Ely. Ely is a small cathedral city; the cathedral is its main tourist attraction but it also has a wonderful stretch of river where you can watch the narrow-boats in summer. It's also an excellent (and much lower cost) base from which to explore Cambridge and the Fens. The hotel is less than a minute's walk from the cathedral, it's in the shopping area, and it's less than a 10 minute walk to the river.
The hotel is an old building and has been extensively modernized inside. The rooms are simply furnished but comfortable, and very clean. There is no elevator and all rooms are on the second and third floors so beware large and heavy suitcases.
The hotel's only weakness is it has no separate lounge or access for hotel guests, who must traverse the busy bar area to get to and from the rooms. This can be a bit awkward during peak times if you're carrying a lot of luggage and also means there is no quiet private sitting area if the bar is crowded.
The hotel's food is good; I thought the breakfast was well above average with a small but plentiful cold buffet and a cooked to order hot plate.
The hotel staff are all very helpful and the overall staff service is excellent.
The Lamb is my favorite hotel in Ely and I look forward to staying there again.
