A beautifully restored heritage building on the banks of the Tamar River, Leisure Inn Penny Royal Hotel and Apartments is close to the stunning Cataract Gorge. Built in 1840 as a corn mill, later relocated stone by stone and now fully renovated to a classic boutique hotel in the historical town of Launceston. Each of the recently refurbished rooms offer all the modern comforts, including high speed internet and 24-hour room service. Leisure Inn Penny Royal Hotel and Apartments also has fully self-contained apartments for those guests wishing to self-cater or perhaps stay a little longer in charming Launceston. The Tamar Valley and surrounding area are well worth exploring, and not to be missed is a visit to the brewery of James Boags, dating back to 1883, and still brewing delicious ale today.

Couldn't fault the Hotel. Very convenient location”
we arrived in launceston on a very rainy cold afternoon. found the penny royal easily, which was a blessing. the staff had everything ready for us on arrival, including a pleasant greeting and a warm room. we walked into the main part of the city and had a choice of good eateries or going back to the inn at penny royal. it was our choice to eat in town, but after conversing with other patrons, would have been very happy to have eaten at the inn. we'll definitely stay there again on our next visit and would happily recommend it to others looking for good quality, reasonably priced, very quaint accommodation.
3 Days at the Penny Royal.”
I have stayed at the Penny Royal before, app 3 years ago for 1 wk periods over 24 months for work. This is the reason I booked it again. Very clean rooms and very central to Launceston city centre. What did surprise me was the extra work they have done to the rear of the upper units, the additional restaurants and the climbing and zip line activities were all new to me. This Hotel offers excellent value for money with a great location, entrance to the Cataract Gorge, and the the heart of Launceston.
Absolutely beautiful.. just perfect.”
We loved the Penny Royal. Our room was very clean and beds very comfortable. The location is perfect. Not to mention value for money!! Cataract Gorge is just a few minutes walk and also the City Centre. We dined at the Mill Tavern which is located in the Penny Royal grounds and the food was beautiful. Be sure to book, we were there mid week and the Restaurant was full both nights. They also serve breakfast. Nicky and her team at the Tavern were fantastic. Great service, great food. Thank you Lonny (that's what the locals call Launceston!!) Beautiful part of Australia :)
Loved it here”
We were very pleased with the locality of the Leisure Inn Penny Royal Hotel. It was within walking distance of the city and the walking track to the famous Cataract Gorge . The buildings in general were historically attractive. Our room was spacious and very comfortable. The restaurant/bistro was cozy, had great food and service. A bonus was the gourmet lolly shop as part of the complex. We would have liked covered parking for our car.
Lovely historical hotel deep in character”
My friend and I stayed for only a night at this lovely hotel, and felt that it really gave us value for money. We had no idea it was so steeped in history when we booked the hotel and was thrilled to discover this fact when we arrived. A quick search on google will tell you that this hotel was originally built as a corn mill in 1840 and was moved 54 kilometres to Launceston and was rebuilt as a hotel over 130 years later – stone by stone. The room we stayed in was at the ground floor, named Sarah's suite, another room was interestingly named "The Stables". The entire hotel was full of character and not to mention, very close to the amazing Cataract Gorge in Launceston. A 7 mins drive would take you to the lovely restaurants along the Tamar River and you would definitely want to consider going for the Tamar Valley River Cruise while you are there. I would definitely choose to stay in this hotel if I ever visit Launceston again.
A cute & quaint, roomy unit”
We loved our time in Launceston & our unit at Leisure Inn Penny Royal Apartments was perfect for our family of 6. Whilst not overly modern, it was clean, comfortable, roomy & really quaint - in a nice way! The location was terrific too. We would definitely stay here again.
Lovely Leisure Inn”
Great stay at the Leisure Inn Penny Royal Hotel and Apartments - located in an old flour mill, it's so full of character! Rooms were large, modern and comfy. Location was good - right next door to Cataract Gorge, a short walk to the city, seaport and to the Tamar River Cruise terminal. Lots of great restaurants around, including the one on site. Would definitely recommend.
Just nice”
Situated in one of the attractions in Launceston we felt lucky to have got such a great deal and stayed at Penny Royal hotel. Will stay again for sure.
Dear Tanakorn, Thank you for your recent review of Leisure Inn Penny Royal, I was delighted to read that you enjoyed your time with us along with the location and facilities surrounding the hotel. We look forward to welcoming you back again. Kind Regards, Natasha
Beautiful with lots of character”
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Leisure Inn Penny Royal Hotel. It was quiet - the views superb and the surroundings so picturesque. We would definitely stay there again!
Re fresh and pleasant ”
We were impressed by how the Park Regis group conserved the buildings and expanded them. We hope the management consider to provide some costumes (with charges, of course) for room guests to take photos -- the best souvenirs at Leisure Inn,Launceston : D The scenic Cataract Gorge is just a short walk from the hotel via passing thru an "ancient" train station, only if one notices it :) By the way, we appreciated the separation of toilet from bathroom as it was convenience to all.
very atmospheric hotel with historical feel.”
Only had one night and was able to use laundry facilities. Availed ourselves of tourist pamphlets in reception. Although the room was "dark" with small windows, we were able to have a good night's sleep and I did not feel claustrophobic. Only negative was the shower head which kept slipping down. Although our room was next to the driveway, we were not at all disturbed by any external noise. Perhaps this was due to the lovely thick walls of this hotel. We would definitely stay at the Penny Royal in Launceston again
Comfortable and Charming Accommodatino”
The Leisure Inn Penny Royal Hotel and Apartments was a lovely accommodation housed in an old European-style building which was clean and charming. Location was wonderful due to the proximity to the city. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay
Unique Medieval Designed Hotel”
I think that this is the best-situated hotel in Launceston City. It is one of the nearest hotels to the Cataract Gorge and the mall area is just 10 minutes walk away. There are many popular restaurants such as Still Water and Cataract on Patterson that are just a minute walk away. The rooms are very nice and clean and the medieval age theme is something unique. Overall, a very pleasant experience.
Just Magnificent ”
This will be the first place I'll check if there is a vacancy the next time I'm in Launceston . Great spot, friendly and helpful staff. Awesome views from the upstairs apartments. The only problem was I knew the other accommodations I was going to stay in around Tasmania wouldn't even come close to this one. And there's a chocolate shop right next to it- Gourlay's!!! It really doesn't get any better. 10/10.
Historic with all the comforts of today”
easy checkin, very, very happy with room, wanted to stay longer and will next time i go to tasmania. this accommodation has everything you could need or ask for. sensible basin outside the bathroom so one can shave while other showers, saving time, large and well equipped room. only two possible disadvantages. the first would be the narrow winding roads in the approach, old launceston at its most challenging, but safe enough with steady progress. if going by taxi you can trust all the drivers to know and negotiate the route well. the second is that even with a ground floor suite you do need to negotiate a few brick steps, but we managed it and we are both over. highly recommend this one.
Great Charm - Outstanding Customer Service”
The young lady in the Restaurant was soooooo smiley and accommodating she made our stay very memorable. We tipped her $150 and we hardly ever tip. The Hotel has great charm, clean and comfortable and the food was outstanding. Definitely will only stay here when in Launceston. So calm and rustic, good views and quiet and beds were really good. Very close to Cataract Gorge and the town centre and museums. All four of us loved the Hotel very much. 10 out of 10 for us.
A stylish boutique heritage ”
Room is clean and tidy, as all the Leisure Inn does. But I did not realize this hotel is heritage which more than 100 years and now refurbished as a stylish hotel when I book it. I book it cuz the price is cheap XD. So when I arrived, it really impress me. And I took a lot of pictures of this hotel, everyone saw my picture said this hotel is beautiful. I am very glad to have chosen this hotel.
Lovely large rooms”
our room was situated right next to reception and the dining room but was amazingly quiet. the room was decorated beautifully, clean and spacious. we were given to vouchers on arrival for free drinks at the bar. booking breakfast the night before entitled us to a $5 discount on a full cooked breakfast. $15 instead of $20. overall this was great value for money with very friendly helpful staff and centrally located in launceston.
Great Accommodation!”
We booked the Penny Royal as we were coming to Launceston for Festivale... Great location, large size room, can't fault it:)
Dear Kerri, Thank you for your recent review of Leisure Inn Penny Royal, I was delighted to read that you enjoyed your time with us over Festivale and we look forward to welcoming you back next year. Regards, Natasha
large, spacious staying for 4 people”
it was a wonderful experience, living in a heritage building. We are allowed to check in early at around 12 pm. It was a 2 storey dwelling with lower level living room and attic level bedrooms. It takes around 10 minutes to walk to the famous Cataract Georges in Launceston and the famous 'Stillwater' restaurant is just opposite the hotel.
