Left early because in my opinion it was terrible. There was one bathroom between 28 (assume min 2 person room) as 2 were out of order. Someone was smoking on the floor so it stunk. The room was so dated and dirty, marks everywhere. I went down in the evening to ask if we could move rooms the next day to be told there weren’t any for the next couple of days and needed to speak to the manager the next day to put a refund request in. Went down the next morning and spoke to the manager who said two toilets were still in use despite the out of order signs... Ok?! The guy went to investigate the smoke but couldn’t smell it? Ok again? There were actually rooms available we could move too but there wasn’t the night before? At this point I’d already booked elsewhere after being told there wasn’t. Everywhere was filthy and the laundry facilities didn’t work. Glad we left early and requested a refund. The only good point was the location.
Location was OK. Requested for a lower deck bed and received a reply saying it was approved but when I am there no lower deck available. The entire place smells so bad. Room was right beside the main road with trucks and bus passing by. Traffic light right outside the window. Curtains not able to fully close and passerby can look in. Was really the worst stay of my life
Budget digs near Cuba”
Pros Great staff and location 24hr reception Large kitchen Quite inexpensive Cons Creaky bunks Can be noisy at times Could use some upkeep with cleanliness of common areas If you plan to spend most of your time out on the town this place is great for the money. It's not all that cosy but it was good enough for me.
Okay for a night but definitely better accommodation out there. ”
The lodge was fine for one night before we crossed to Picton. It wasn't the cleanest but the beds were clean and relatively comfortable. Lots of noise from both inside and out of the Lodge all night. Kitchen was weel equipped but the living area very run down as were the shared bathrooms. Clear divide between the short and long term guests. Staff were friendly and helpful. Great central location is about the only redeeming feature.
Good value for money”
Initailly chose this as it was the cheapest one. Ive read some reviews about how awful it is because its dirty, its not a 5 star hotel but it is a nice place to stay. Its a bit dirty in the way that hostels can be sometimes. Most of the dirt I saw was from guests not wiping down the table after they used it ans dirty dishes in the sink. The staff are super helpful, the airline lost my luagge and the staff basically helped me anyway they could, lent me a charger, lent me a towel and didnt charge me and even in a 12 bed dorm you can actually sleep!! Loads of space to chill The only annoying downside, but after being in another hostel I think may be the norm, is there is no individual locker in the room which means you either have to go to reception everytime you want ro pull something out from there storage or you have to trust that no one in your dorm has sticky fingers. My flight out of NZ is from Wellington, I will be staying here again.
Cheap and close to thr city centre”
The stay was okay. It has a nice chilling place with tv, large dining table and a kitchen. I was staying in a 4 bed room for 3 nights. The room was lacking some ventilation as there was only one small window which opens only a quarter of the way. The bed was nice and comfortable even for a tall person. One of the people that stayed there was snoring so loudly at night that no earplugs or pillow around the head would help at all. Our room didn't get proper sleep all three nights because of that. I think people like that should seek some remedies or book a room for them selves or pay for someone to stay with them... Anyways, without too much ranting, the place was okay. The people at the reception always helpful and works 24/7
Dear Martynas, Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am glad that your overall stay was enjoyable and that our staff where friendly and helpful. We are sorry to here about the person snoring in your room and the bad ventilation. We are currently in the process of having our windows replaced to hopefully stop this. As for the person unfortunately we cannot predict if people will snore or not. My suggestion for you is that if this happens again see reception about moving rooms. Most receptionists are backpackers themselves so we know how annoying this can be! Kind Regards, Lodge in the City Team
The kitchen is dirty and definitely not well organised. All the facilities are very basic. I spend a lot of time in hostels and this one definitely doesn't make any effort to make the atmosphere nice.
Shared bathroom was filthy and wasn't informed on the need to pay parking”
Overall was okay. Attentive staff, quick checkin and check out. Shared toilet is fine, but there's sanitary pad on the bathroom tile, also was not inform if parking is chargeable. Should it be complimentary parking? The room is too small, smelly and the bed, i don't want to start...appreciate if you could do something to it. Also the bathroom.
Clean but very small room, no were to put luggage ”
The hostel was clean, and cheap. However we requested a non smoking room to which we got however it was located above the smoking area??? Sure something wrong there? The room was very small nowere to our luggage. But clean and good value for money as it’s a typical hostel. Kitchen was pretty dirty and basic
If you are just looking for a room just to sleep in, then this would be an Ok choice. It's affordable amd within the CBD. The staff are friendly. However, i asked for a large bed during booking, but we were placed in a double bed room, we didn't bother changing it since we're only staying for a night.
Don’t worth money”
The room is old and tidy, restroom is small with only 2 bathroom for a floor. We left a thing at our room when check out but they don’t support us to find our stuff. The good point is location convenient to work around but you should consider another place around their
Run-down building, surly front desk staff, broken lift, and only one mixed bathroom per floor of like 20 rooms. This building is a decent location but has no parking and is clearly over-booked constantly. We booked a private room for 3 and ended up in a closet on a bunk bed. Would never stay here again. Not even enough space to turn around in your own room.
You get what you paid ”
One of the cheapest accommodation in Wellington, thus attracted alot of backpackers to stay here. kitchen was quite crowded though i stayed here during winter time (off season). Walking distance to Capital Market (Food Court) and Cuba Street. it is an old building with a functional elevator. there are only two bathrooms for whole building and are unisex, thus expect queue. if you are a mysophobia, u may not willing to bath in it.
the first night we stayed in a beautiful double room, the other two in noisy dorms. the toilets are mixed but clean and big showers some in bad condition. big and good equiped kitchen and two big common areas. but many weird people living there. but for the price it's definitely okay!
One of the cheapest hostel in the city and you've got what you paid for (even less). The building, beds, matresses, showers, toilets are very old, a lot of things are broken. It doesn't look clean. I didn't feel confortable there. Only the lounge area is fine, even if it's old as well.
Cheap and well located hostel ”
After reading all the bad reviews I was a bit afraid to stay here but it turned out to be ok for a few days. Building definitely needs a make over (loads of cuts in the walls, part of bathroom floor gone etc) but the room, kitchen and toilets were clean, staff ok and the location is great.
Get what you pay for”
We'd read the reviews and we're honestly worried about staying here with half of the things that were said about it, and prepared to have to pay for another place to stay at, when I got there, the staff was very VERY kind and funny, the bed and sheets were clean and tidy, I stayed with some mates in a 10 bedroom room, and the only downside was I'm pretty sure a couple had sex in the bed next to me, the shower was hot but kind of dribbled out. So like my title explains, you get what you paid for, and my mates and I just needed a place to come back to at 4am after clubbing, and sleep, this place was amazing for that. They also had a clean kitchen, everyone that we stayed with at the time was a lot of fun, I would definitely recommend it, and definitely will be going back
The receptionist in morning needs upgrade to her service”
The receptionist (with probably French accent) responsible on 13th and 14th morning was unfriendly. Kept looking into the computer screen when talking to customer is not welcoming at all. When I asked if there's a parking space left for tonight, she said "you go to the garage and check on your own". I told her it's full at the moment but probably someone will check out later then the parking will be available since it's just 12:00 mid-day. She was like "if no space left, then no". I asked her if there's any parking lot around, she's like "I don't know. I don't drive". I asked "is it possible to do early check-in", "check-in at 2pm". Seriously ?! It was stormy outside and we eventually had to park 15 minutes away and waited 2 hours and walked all the way back in the storm happened once 7-8 years in Wellington. Ironically, the lady helped us check-in in the afternoon told us there's a parking space for the night! Apart from her, the rest receptionists are very friendly, helpful and nice.
The only good thing is the location”
"You get what you pay" applies here but since it is only one night, what we need was a place to sleep and it was one of the cheapest in CBD. The room was very basic and with the right size, the heater was not working in our room and it was freezing cold. At our dorm area too, the was no shower head in the bathroom that was disappointing. Will choose another place if we set foot in Wellington again.
Very basic and unclean, get what you pay for”
The room was clean and comfortable, but the window latch was broken so could not completely close. The staff were friendly. The bathroom on the 1st floor was appauling. The smell was foul and it was extremely badly maintained. We went to the 3rd floor for a more usable and clean bathroom, however it was still badly maintained and mouldy. The hotel was generally poorly maintained and I'd spend just a little more to stay elsewhere.
