Good value for money”

Initailly chose this as it was the cheapest one. Ive read some reviews about how awful it is because its dirty, its not a 5 star hotel but it is a nice place to stay. Its a bit dirty in the way that hostels can be sometimes. Most of the dirt I saw was from guests not wiping down the table after they used it ans dirty dishes in the sink. The staff are super helpful, the airline lost my luagge and the staff basically helped me anyway they could, lent me a charger, lent me a towel and didnt charge me and even in a 12 bed dorm you can actually sleep!! Loads of space to chill The only annoying downside, but after being in another hostel I think may be the norm, is there is no individual locker in the room which means you either have to go to reception everytime you want ro pull something out from there storage or you have to trust that no one in your dorm has sticky fingers. My flight out of NZ is from Wellington, I will be staying here again.

The receptionist in morning needs upgrade to her service”

The receptionist (with probably French accent) responsible on 13th and 14th morning was unfriendly. Kept looking into the computer screen when talking to customer is not welcoming at all. When I asked if there's a parking space left for tonight, she said "you go to the garage and check on your own". I told her it's full at the moment but probably someone will check out later then the parking will be available since it's just 12:00 mid-day. She was like "if no space left, then no". I asked her if there's any parking lot around, she's like "I don't know. I don't drive". I asked "is it possible to do early check-in", "check-in at 2pm". Seriously ?! It was stormy outside and we eventually had to park 15 minutes away and waited 2 hours and walked all the way back in the storm happened once 7-8 years in Wellington. Ironically, the lady helped us check-in in the afternoon told us there's a parking space for the night! Apart from her, the rest receptionists are very friendly, helpful and nice.

One night stay”

Excellent for a short stay if you need it cheap. For that money we've got nice clean room with bed linen and towels. It was warm and comfortable to sleep. Bathroom is clean and most of the time is empty, all for yourself. The kitchen and lodge were full of loud people in the evening but in the morning it was nice and quiet to have breakfast. We had our window looking into the yard, so it was quite load till late evening - people are enjoying themselves out there and sound spreads like in a well. Maybe other rooms don't have such an effect. All in all it was good for such money.

Get what you pay for”

We'd read the reviews and we're honestly worried about staying here with half of the things that were said about it, and prepared to have to pay for another place to stay at, when I got there, the staff was very VERY kind and funny, the bed and sheets were clean and tidy, I stayed with some mates in a 10 bedroom room, and the only downside was I'm pretty sure a couple had sex in the bed next to me, the shower was hot but kind of dribbled out. So like my title explains, you get what you paid for, and my mates and I just needed a place to come back to at 4am after clubbing, and sleep, this place was amazing for that. They also had a clean kitchen, everyone that we stayed with at the time was a lot of fun, I would definitely recommend it, and definitely will be going back

Great value for a short stay”

Late arrival in Wellington for a big night out and just a few hours sleep needed so why pay mega $$$. Lodge reminded me of my student days (probably not a bad thing for a middle aged couple) and the beds were clean and comfy. A bit noisy but we caught up on sleep when we got home!

Lodging near Courtney Place”

Within a ten minute walk of the main strip

The service was nice, and the rooms / lounge area were of a fair standard. They were refurbishing the exterior of the building while we were there (which was no issue) but I can say certain aspects of the interior needed it a lot more. The shared bathrooms looked like they hadn't been cleaned in weeks - they were pink, brown and slimy in a number of places in the showers, were in a poor state of repair and the shower curtains were very mouldy/slimy. It also doubled as a washing basket as there was a pile about a meter high, a meter wide and two meters deep of dirty clothes/sheets/towels in the shared bathroom. All the seals were broken on all the fridges in the kitchen also, so none of them shut properly which made us reluctant to keep food in them as we thought it would spoil. The rooms themselves were fine, comfortable and clean, and the lounge area was nice with a very impressive fish tank. The sound proofing wasn't great but that's pretty standard for a backpackers. I've stayed at the Downtown Backpackers before so I know this price bracket in Wellington deserves a higher standard of lodging - and if the bathrooms hadn't been actually off-putting this would have been fine. It is probably the cheapest option closest to Courtney Place, yet the only convenience we got from that was it only took ten minutes to walk to the airport bus stop. I can only hope that after fixing the facade that they are planning on renovating the interior.

Cheap and close to thr city centre”

The stay was okay. It has a nice chilling place with tv, large dining table and a kitchen. I was staying in a 4 bed room for 3 nights. The room was lacking some ventilation as there was only one small window which opens only a quarter of the way. The bed was nice and comfortable even for a tall person. One of the people that stayed there was snoring so loudly at night that no earplugs or pillow around the head would help at all. Our room didn't get proper sleep all three nights because of that. I think people like that should seek some remedies or book a room for them selves or pay for someone to stay with them... Anyways, without too much ranting, the place was okay. The people at the reception always helpful and works 24/7

Dear Martynas, Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am glad that your overall stay was enjoyable and that our staff where friendly and helpful. We are sorry to here about the person snoring in your room and the bad ventilation. We are currently in the process of having our windows replaced to hopefully stop this. As for the person unfortunately we cannot predict if people will snore or not. My suggestion for you is that if this happens again see reception about moving rooms. Most receptionists are backpackers themselves so we know how annoying this can be! Kind Regards, Lodge in the City Team

I wouldn't recommend the hostel to my friends but it doesn't mean I wouldn't stay there again myself.”

. I think it kinda doesn't deserve all bad ratings you can see on internet. I stayed there on Fri-Sat nights and Friday night in particular was a bit "wild" and loud but you couldn't hear anything in the room (1st floor) apart from traffic outside but if you want to stay in CBD there's obviously some traffic 24/7. If you expect birds singing outside your window don't go there! The whole place is sort of run down but considering number of people staying there it cannot be in mint condition, although would be nice to have shower heads on 1st floor. It might not be cleanest place on earth but again, considering number of people there + it was a weekend and to be fair I saw staff runing around with vacuum cleaner and cleaning trolley even after 11PM.

A backpackers is always noisy and not so clean. But this one does its best. The rooms are clean, bedding clean (in a 2 person bunkbed room) and the staff friendly and knowledgeable. Road noise not too bad and was heated well in the winter. Location was excellent. Easy walk to everywhere. Kitchen was well equipped, busy, but finding a space to put food in the fridges was a bit of an issue. Bathrooms could be a problem if it gets busy, but we were there in winter so no problem with cleanliness or availabilty. Overall, good value.

Location, price

The location made downtown Wellington really accessible. The rooms were fine, though the kitchen/eating areas tended to get pretty gross (which I think is more of a reflection on the people staying than the management--it was always cleaned up by morning).

One of the cheapest accommodation in Wellington, thus attracted alot of backpackers to stay here. kitchen was quite crowded though i stayed here during winter time (off season). Walking distance to Capital Market (Food Court) and Cuba Street. it is an old building with a functional elevator. there are only two bathrooms for whole building and are unisex, thus expect queue. if you are a mysophobia, u may not willing to bath in it.

Cheapest accommodation in Wellington

Stayed here for 5 nights while trying to find long term accommodation in Wellington. It's through cheapest hostel in Wellington but I'd pay the higher rate for a nicer place. Rooms are depressing, building is old and very noisy. The water tank made horrible noises every night we were there. All toilets were blocked on morning we woke up. The kitchen area was always dirty which shows the kind of people that stay there. If can afford it then stay elsewhere

2 night stay with party at night time”

Pros - 24/7 check in, location, able to leave bags there during the day and friendly staff Cons - the staff member did not lodge our key bond when she took the cash and we had grief getting this back at the end of the stay. The toilets and showers were filthy. At night, there was a party going on and the staff did not do anything about it. We booked a queen bed and got bunk beds. When we went back to pick them up from the "storage space" the staff member did not check our bag numbers to make sure that we did not take someone else's bag, they need training in that space!

"You get what you pay" applies here but since it is only one night, what we need was a place to sleep and it was one of the cheapest in CBD. The room was very basic and with the right size, the heater was not working in our room and it was freezing cold. At our dorm area too, the was no shower head in the bathroom that was disappointing. Will choose another place if we set foot in Wellington again.
