I would definitely stay here again and I would also recommend this place to anyone that is visiting the Aso area. The staff here went above and beyond to make my stay more enjoyable. My Japanese style room was very spacious and the bed was comfortable. The private onsen was well organized in terms of sign ups and had great amenities. The Kaiseki dinners and the breakfast spread are well worth the rate of the room alone. The manager of the hotel also arranged for a car rental for me and even drove me to the car rental station in her own vehicle. She also prepared maps, brochures and guides for my day trip to Takachiho Gorge. And also a bottle of tea! The staff also gave me a ride to the bus station the following morning. Even though the location of the ryokan is a bit out of the way, the service I received was exceptional. Sozankyo was the highlight of my trip in Kyushu, Japan.
The ryokan has what you need for an Onsen getaway. To get here, I think you probably need to drive but parking is free. It’s located near to the eateries in town. Each room is allowed 50 min in the private Onsen. The shared public Onsen is available 24hrs. There is also a foot bath outside the ryokan. Room is clean and nice. Gives you a zen feeling when facing the garden. There is a rooftop bar with affordable alcohol offering and nice ambience at night to view the nightsky. One night stay at the ryokan is not cheap even if dinner was provided. Food quality is good. However, one often need to pay much more for an Onsen experience at Hakone.
Great deal for a lovely Ryokan ”
Very nice Ryokan with use of private Onsen. Large, clean and well kept room. Friendly staff and nice breakfast. Many dinning options nearby.
Beautiful traditional ryokan ”
Stayed in the Koyo room which has a beautiful garden view. Really enjoyed the private onsen bath and just sitting on the couch enjoying the garden view in the morning and late afternoons. We were served a bowl of matcha and sweet during check in which we really enjoyed.
+ traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast is delicious + great garden view in the room + nice 50-mins private onsen bath room by reservation + very clean, nice staff + quiet environment
Quaint hotel in a quiet town”
Cosy hotel in a small town--clean spacious room but dated. Strange that the room has an old safe that needs to be fed with 100 yen coin to use!!! Staff tries to be very courteous --nice breakfast and dinner. Only complain is that the stairs are too steep--takes a toll on the knees!
Traditional Japanese Ryokan. Very welcoming service makes up for the limited English they spoke. Clean rooms. Food quality is good. Many eateries within 5 mins walking. But you will need a car if you want to explore Aso town.
Restful Ryokan with Sumptuous Surprises!”
Great location, convenient to bus transport from Oita and Mt Aso station! Soothing music played during meals help tired travellers to unwind. Kudos to the chef and service team as the meals are meticulously planned and generously prepared. Details to guests' needs and personalized service makes this the best 2 nights stay of my 10 day tour of Kyushu. I commend the helpful staff and friendly owners who gives their best in this newly refurbished ryokan.
good service, nice food”
the staff are kind n helpful, good service, the dinner is great, it will be better if bathroom is included in the room, the private spa is nice but too small which can only fit in 2 ppl at once,, overall the hotel is good
This is a must do side trip. Do the dinner breakfast addition -makes for an exquisite experience. Everything from check in to private baths great and a wonderful park nearby. Please don't let past earthquake let you cancel or reconsider this place has wonderful energy !
We had a pleasant stay at this onsen hotel. Hotel staff are friendly and helpful. Very good onsen - they have private family onsen and public onsen. Bath room amenities are of good quality. Would recommend this hotel and likely to go back again next time when we go to Kyushu.
Will go there again if I go to Aso in the future”
The day we went there was on a snowy day, the staff (I think he is the owner who can speak good English) welcomed us with tea. The room is spacious and in wafu style. We went both of their public and private Osen - quiet and relaxing. The breakfast was splendid. At night we were looking for dinner. The staff who speak good English gave us recommendation and booked for us. We had a happy dinner. The only thing I can think of is that we self drive the whole way, so probably not convenient to those who use train as transport, otherwise, well worth the price for Osen ryokan (we got discount!)
Great for digital detox and relaxation”
spent two nights, breakfast is great and dinner is excellent, friendly staff, there is a bus to get to hotel from train station, need some guidance to find out which bus to take, convenient to go to Aso mountain, there are quite a few lanes of sakura trees around the hotel, nice blossom when we were there.
Onsen are very good. Food are excellent. Staff are helpful. The room are standard. No escalator at this hotel. If you do not like to walk up the stairs, ask for the room on the lower floors.
Good hotel. Good onsen. Clean room with private toilet in the room. Shower at onsen in the common area or in a private onsen. The food are nicely prepared and very delicious.
Family onsen privided”
overall service was good, but not perfect. Staffs are very friendly. We enjoyed the family onsen.
Very comfortable stay with excellent service! ”
I felt like I was treated as a special guest when staying inside this ryokan! Service staffs is very helpful and there's some of them who can speak English and Chinese. There's private onsen which can be booked once for every room, but no reservation is needed in the morning. Rooms is spacious and I love the vanity spot! Dinner and breakfast is good too! Do tell them in advance if you there's food that you can't eat. The only thing to note that this is not in kurokawa onsen, it's a 40mins drive from there.
A Ryokan style hotel with nice private onsen”
Once you enter the hotel you can feel the sense of Japan. This is one of the best Ryokan style hotel I've ever stayed. Although they are not really fluent with English, they have all the important information written in English to show you. The staffs are super friendly, I was greeted the staffs there with nice matcha and dessert and shown all the info I need to know. The room is spacious and the private onsen is good (free but need book in advance).
Everything I love about this hotel”
Service was Superb. We arrive with our car rental at night time, upon approaching the hotel parking lot there staff already waiting for us and hurriedly get our bags. Get to experience sleeping on a Tatami mats and get to wear a Yakata. PROS: Welcome drinks, free coffee at the lounge, free one time private onsen ( note: bathing tax applicable), Good breakfast and a wonderful view at the room. Dinning Guide: Request at the hotel for the map. They pointed us to a nearby clustered restaurant for dinning that closes up to past midnight.
Aso Uchinomaki Onsen Sozankyo, you are the best!”
Stayed there for one night. One night + 2 meals (dinner and breakfast) deal. Fantastic from arrival till departure. I picked up rental car from Kumamoto on day of torrential rain that went on till the next day morning. The whole Kyushu was soaked. Arrived outside the hotel at almost 7:00pm. Hotel staff saw my car and immediately came out with umbrellas to help me. The hotel is very welcoming, staff is great, helpful and friendly. Dinner was ready at 7:30pm and was thoroughly enjoyable. Great presentation, good portion and tasty. The single Japanese style room was as authentic as one could expect. The bathhouse, landscaping and the hot spring water were relaxing. Breakfast was another highlight. The lady that served us meals was wonderful.
