Heaven on earth”
From the moment Mr. Sunny picked us up, the Madulkelle Tea and Eco lodge exceeded expectation! The staff is friendly and anticipates your wants and needs as if they were in your head. The location is breathtaking and meticulously cared for. You are able to experience the many things that make the Sri Lankan people and culture so amazing all through one small, perfectly curated lodging experience deep in the hill country. The pictures, amazing as thy are, cannot touch the experience of seeing it all in person. I not only would highly recommend to anyone looking for a quiet, serene vacation experience, but am already planning on how to get back myself as soon as possible. Thank you so much to everyone at the Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge for such an amazing experience!
Absolutely incredible. Unfortunately we only stayed one night as we had to be back in Colombo. This place is other-worldly. Most beautiful place I've ever seen. Worth every second of the slightly harrowing trip up to Madulkelle. We arrived at night and the night sky is totally unspoiled- I felt like I was in a planetarium. Woke up to endless green valley and mountains with a cloud of mist snaking through the mountains. Had a lovely breakfast with the freshest tea possible (picked on site) with the same view in the impeccably designed and decorated lodge. Had a fabulous walk through the plantation and neighbouring village with a local man named Kumar. Kitsiri welcomed us with a smile when we arrived late at night. The net day he managed to arrange our travel from Madulkelle to Colombo through Kandy even though we changed our plans numerous times. Sani, the driver who works with the transport service used by the hotel was excellent- driver come naturalist, who was able to point all sorts of fruit and spice trees on our drive.
Stunning setting, great staff.”
The journey up to Madulkelle isn't for the faint-hearted and the location of the lodges means you'll need to be happy to walk up a few stairs, but boy is it worth it! The view that greets you every morning as you open up your luxury tent flaps more than makes up for it. Food was tasty and well priced which is a relief as you really are at the mercy of the hotel. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the local area and the tea factory. The kitchen team also did a great cooking class which was the best meal we had there. As with everywhere in SriLanka the staff and locals were lovely.
Relaxing and peaceful seclusion”
We travelled as a couple and had a wonderful, relaxing time. We were met by Mr Sunny at the train station in Kandy as pre-arranged with the hotel. The ride to the hotel was a bit arduous as we had not expected the narrow, bumpy roads cum dirt tracks and it was by car and tuk tuk. Our first evening meal was a bit of a disappointment as I now realise that we arrived late and were probably the last people to order and that the kitchen had perhaps already closed. The soup was lukewarm and so was the curry. Staff bent over backwards to compensate for this failing by offering a breakfast of our choice for the next morning. There was a fair choice of meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Plenty of fruits at breakfast, a selection of dessert at dinner. Delicious Sri Lankan curries. The accommodation in the tent/lodge was very comfortable. Plentiful hot water and powerful shower. Comfortable beds with duvet which kept us warm during the night. Strong winds at night - Bring your ear plugs if you are a light sleeper! Do bring at least a cardigan for the evenings as it gets very droughty and cold in the dining terrace. Beautiful scenery all round. We tried the spa on our last day which was good and had such a beautiful view. We opted for a tea picking talk one day and went amongst the tea-pickers which was very informative. All the staff are extremely polite and friendly. Perhaps a "fine-tuning" is needed - they need to be consistent with what they do but perhaps that is what the charm is about staying in Sri Lanka at a tea station. All in all, we would come again and would thoroughly recommend this beautiful place in this part of the world.
Escape the Madness!”
This relatively new property is a true 4-star hotel in a country where every other hotel calls itself a 5-star property, when most are anything but! It is an arduous trek to get to Madulkelle. However, those that brave the 5- hour transit time from Colombo will be rewarded with a very relaxing time. At present there is very little to do at the hotel because it is in the middle of nowhere. After speaking to the owner, Bhathiya, he informed me that more activities, like rock climbing would be forthcoming. Despite this, the place is meant with relaxation in mind. The views from the guest tents of the Knuckles Range are superb! He also said that in the near future a helipad would be constructed, thus reducing travel time from Colombo by over 80%! Special mention should be given to the chefs and waiters: the former allowed my partner and I to not only watch them prepare our lunch, but also be a part of the cooking process as well. The food, especially the Sri Lankan was very good. Opt for Sri Lankan food. After all, you wouldn't travel to Iceland and expect great Sri lankan food, would you? That being said, the western food that was presented at the dinner buffet wasn't bad either. Only negative point that needs to be mentioned: this property, like it's namesake,is Eco friendly. Problem is, the the water is heated with solar. No sun = no hot water. Keep this in mind.
Gorgeous hotel but difficult to get there!”
We spent 2 nights with our 3 month old at Madulkelle and it was a wonderful hotel, with delicious food, beautiful views, comfortable "glamping" accommodations and a wonderfully friendly staff. We loved waking up to the sun rise over mountains and Ceylon tea fields. That being said, the road to get there is in HORRIBLE condition. It may be only twenty-something Kms from Kandy, but expect to take more than an hour to get there because you can't go at more than 10-20kmph much of the way on a very narrow, unpaved, and often steep and rocky "road". 4x4 recommended to get there. All in all it was worth the trip, just don't expect to go anywhere while you're there!
An experience we will never forget ”
We spent two nights at Madulkelle and absolutely loved it - a wonderful escape in the Sri Lankan highlands, with views to die for and amazing rooms. As we were going on to Ella and Nuwara Eliya where there are plenty of tea plantations and walks, we focused on relaxing and enjoying the facilities at Madulekelle. Great pool, wonderful walks through the plantation without other tourists around, and great atmosphere in the evening with a roaring fire, billiards and board games. The service is generally excellent although a few of the staff can be quite eccentric - but that added to our experience in our view. Food was good but we did expect something a bit more special given the five star quality of the hotel and the prices paid for the food. Despite this, we would definitely recommend a visit here.
Stunning Location with great service and quality”
This new and intimate hotel has only been open for 6 months. The owner spent 5 years creating his vision of an eco friendly palace in the clouds. The hotel is situated about a 90 minute drive north west of Kandy. It's actually in a tea plantation at bout 3000 feet. The main house where the meals are served is just lovely. It was specially designed and built by the owner. It has a lovely terrace which drops down to a beautiful and well tended garden with an infinity pool at the far end. Inside the house there is more seating for dinning a snooker table and some easy chairs and sofas placed around a real fire place. The staff are brilliant and they speak great English. Also the food which comes in a buffet style was freshly cooked and each day and was superb. Accommodation is in African Safari style tents which stand on stilts. They dotted around the plantation and of the highest standard. With a large double bed and bathroom. This really is a classy place.
Beautiful eco lodge”
We really enjoyed our time at the eco lodge. The accommodation itself was simple but great, comfy bed with a verandah, toilet and great shower. The environment is so peaceful, the pool is stunning, we got a great massage overlooking the tea plantations and enjoyed eating in the restaurant each day. We also booked a 2 hr walk with Manilla who works at the lodge and he showed us around the grounds - it was a real highlight of the trip. We learnt a lot about tea, the land and the people of Sri Lanka, he was a wonderful guide and very informative. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The only downside was that we didn't realise the lodge is quite a long way from Kandy, about 1.5 hrs from the town so keep in mind that you aren't really staying in Kandy. That was a little disappointing as it meant we spent all our time at the lodge and ate all meals there - food was good but would have been nice to be able to explore the town. Overall, I would recommend the lodge.
Breathtaking views and heartwarming service”
This place truly is a tranquil paradise. The grounds are spotless, well put-together and give way to truly breathtaking views. We stayed here at the end of our Sri Lankan journey (right after climbing Adam's Peak), so we did absolutely nothing but rest and relax in our tent and casually stroll the grounds-- and it was still perfect! Time seemed to slip away just by observing the beauty. We never got bored. The service was absolutely faultless. There was a small mix-up at check in where we were asked if we'd like to upgrade to the honeymoon suite for a small fee and we did (so worth it), however it turned out that the honeymoon suite was already booked on the last night of our three-night stay. They handled this perfectly by not charging the upgrade fee after all and moved us to another tent seamlessly on our last day. When we were checking out, we didn't have time to eat breakfast and they packed it up for us to go! Really wonderful service. If you can afford it, do opt for the suite. It's roomier, and the tent is more sturdy so it is less affected by the wind at night. Overall, wind and nature sounds did not bother us. Try to remember that you're in a tent. If you expect not to hear the wilderness, you're in the wrong place. We didn't find the road up to the hotel that bad, as some people stated. We had a very good driver (Sunny) who we booked through the hotel. He was wonderful: knowledgeable and kind. He was the exception to our experiences with less honest and less competent drivers during the rest of our trip. The meals here are generously portioned and very affordable. We were worried about the cost of lunch and dinner here since the hotel is so far-removed that they could essentially charge anything and the captive guests would have to accept it. First of all, we found that the generous included breakfast kept us full until dinnertime. And the set dinner menu is at $15USD per person for 4 courses. That's really great value! We would love to visit Madulkelle T
Stunning location ”
the view from your lodge/tent is pretty much what you pay for, there's not many establishments where you can wake up to such an amazing view on a morning. the rooms are nice and clean and well appointed with tea and coffee facilities etc although don't expect a tv! the shower was nice and hot with complimentary toiletries. food at the hotel was good and fairly priced. there were a few minor issues which could be addressed but didn't really affect our stay. there are a few bare electrical sockets ie just a wire out of a wall with a bulb taped to it, the pool was pretty murky and the driveway is rather a challenge. also worth a mention although unavoidable is the fact that if the wind picks up in the night, don't expect to get much sleep as the tent will be flapping around a fair bit. overall though, we loved it here and would highly recommend it for the views alone.
Stay of a Lifetime”
If you are considering this resort, don't hesitate, book! This is one of the most special places I've ever seen or stayed. Excellent accommodations with every detail thought out. Excellent staff who care and support you through your stay. Stunning lodge and grounds with really cool activities. Madulkelle will live on in our hearts!
7 star experience”
You can spend same kind of money at taj or marriott or hyatt at a lot of other places but they still wont be able to deliver you this kind of experience. Its a true 7 star experience. Ask for herath and kit when u go there. Its a lankan and french guy's joint effort and each single piece and system is most thought after. Its situated on top of a lush green tea estate lookng at the knuckles mountain range in front amidst clouds. Far from the maddening crowd ,when u get served hot and fresh kitchen garden food will you realise what madulkele stands for. Beware of the leeches though at a few outdoor areas.
Retreat in the camp”
Madulkelle Lodge, a 5* camping tents lodge. We finally succeeded to book at Madulkelle; twice we tried to reserve and twice it was fully booked (a good sign). We wanted to experience a different style of accommodation such as the tent camp and were not disappointed. The tents are spacious enough and well equipped; it responds to a comfortable night stay. Perfectly safe and waterproof, it offers the minimum needed, equally comfortable as any classic hotel room. The main bungalow is where the reception is and the bar restaurant. The food is fine yet the garden vegetables do not appear so much on the plate (may be du to the dry season at the time). In the evening a fire is lit in the fire place which is really enjoyable as at 1000m altitude as the air can turn fresh in the evening. The main bungalow is cozy, it is an opened indoor area organized with mid-level floors which offers a billiard and chess game floor and the bar lounge seating enlighten by this fire place ... lovely, a good break from the urban buzz.
Luxury glamping in stunning surroundings”
We spent our first 2 nights here after flying into columbo from UK and a long drive. It is high up in the tea growing area, with magnificent views. The accommodation is in superb tents made in South Africa with screed floors and a balcony overlooking the view. The beds are 5 star comfort with a shower room basin and loo behind separated by a partition wall. It was quite windy at times whilst we were there cooling the temperature at night but not uncomfortably so. The main lodge is open plan with a seething area, roaring lig Fire, bar, dining area and a large snooker table to help affirm the colonial roots. Lovely veranda wrapping the outside for drinks and dining. The food is very inexpensive and good quality. We recommend mudukelle.
Incredible! Don't get a tuk-tuk tho!!”
Visited this Hotel in September 2014. Travelled from Kandy by tuk-tuk... Don't do it! The visit was incredible and all too short! arrived at dusk after a long day and sat drinking tea on the veranda, still shaking after a long and perilous journey up the mountain. Despite the discomfort of the journey it was all worth it. The tents (an understatement really) were wonderful and had a wonderful colonial feel to them. Woke up at dawn as the sun rose over the mountains opposite the hotel, and swam in the pool while the mist rose and swirled around distant hills. Pure bliss. We had traveled independently up to that point and had asked the hotel to arrange a driver for us for that morning. Sonny arrived the next morning and accompanied us for three days while we travelled to the cultural triangle and then back to Nuwara Elyia. If you need a driver he was the best! Thanks to all in Madukele for your hospitality and for arranging such a wonderful driver for us; he made our visit to Sri Lanka all the more special.
Unforgettable stay with stunning views”
We had an unforgettable stay at this lodge. Based on a unique concept of stilted luxury tents in the midst of tea plantations, there are stunning views of the mountains and plantations from the room. The tent itself was comfortable and you would not be able to tell the difference from a luxury hotel room. The food was excellent and the staff were very friendly. It even had a swimming pool but it was too cold to use it. Highly recommended for a stay of atleast 2 days.
Nice once get there but location is inaccurate”
firstly a warning. this hotel is not in kandy, all drivers said that it wasn't even in the same area as kandy, making it (relatively) expensive and slow to get there. agoda should really check these details rather than relying on the hotels own descriptions which, if inaccurate, can put people in difficult situations. if you are not looking for a kandy hotel and want to stay in beautiful tea country, this is a great place to go. the views were amazing and the lodging was very comfortable and clean. worth staying more than a night if you are going to make the effort to go there.
Peaceful retreat from the grinds of traveling”
While the road to this heavenly retreat is paved with potholes through narrow, windy roads through the hills, the stay here is worth the journey. Charming location; I fell asleep to the sounds of nature and woke up to a breaktaking view overlooking the valley of tea plantations from my room balcony. Service was courteous without being patronizing. Food was delicious. Outdoor pool was not heated, but it was not cold even on a cloudy day. Spa treatments were reasonably price and relaxing. Each room-tent is isolated, providing adequate privacy. On my last night there, some loud music could be heard from inside my room, but that stopped as soon as I informed the front desk of the situation. I was informed it was from guests in a nearby tent. So a constructive feedback to the hotel management: it would be a good idea to have a sign in the room informing guests of the lack of soundproofing as to save future guests the awkward feeling of complaining about noises from nearby guests, especially during the high season when the hotel is more full. Overall, this is a charming place to stay to get away from all the hubbubs; I felt rested and recharged afterward and would go back to stay longer than just two days as to have some days to do the activities and some days to just chill.
As soon as you arrive this lodge, you can feel right away that you are in a unique place. From the colonial’s decoration & spirit, to the concept of sleepping in a tent right at the middle of tea fields, god this lodge is memorable. Although food is excellent, maybe one thing to improve could be the limited choice on the menu.
