"We spent 5 days in the Escape Beach Resort in a Standard Room with Breakfast. The rooms where very clean and the view from the pool is stunning. The only downside is that they have not that many chairs at the pool. But we always got a chair if we liked. The location is at the end of Mae Nam Beach. You need to get a motorbike or a car to get around what we would recommend. Mae Nam and Bophut are nice little towns worth a visit. Breakfast was served from 7-11 am. It contained everything you wished from fresh fruits, continental dishes over eggs as you like them to a thai dish. Never had this good breakfast in Thailand. There are also seaview bungalows available which I would recommend. But ask for direct seaview not poolview. The stuff was very friendly and helpful. We felt very welcome and would definitely return for another stay."

" From the moment we were picked up at the airport by the hotel's minivan service, to the time we were dropped off, service was seamless. The resort facilities and each and each & every staff member met and surpassed all of our expectations. The resort grounds and our pool villa were immaculate. Every morning, without fail, a housekeeper knocked on our door to ask if our room needed service. Our villa had the comfiest beds with cloud-like pillows and duvets inside, and a huge chaise and 2 lounge chairs on the patio. There were many electrical outlets inside and outside of our room and the electricity never cut out even once, not even during storms. Linens were pristine, and there were toiletries aplenty. Every last detail was thought of; even white bathrobes and room slippers were provided. Both my friend and I were very impressed with the resort's attention to detail. The breakfast buffet had both western and Thai offerings, and service was stellar through and through. The concierge even gave us 10% discount meal & beverage coupons. The resort staff were always happy to help and acknowledged every request efficiently and courteously. Happy hour was from 4pm to 6pm and 100 baht cocktails were on special. At lunchtime, there was a krapow personal pan pizza & your choice of soda for 140 baht. Everything I had from the resort's restaurant was delicious! The resort's wifi signal was far superior to my internet on the mainland, not that anyone would actually need wifi on such a beautiful, serene stretch of beach. While the beach wasn't white sand, it was very peaceful, unlike the busier Chaweng area, and Mae Nam Beach is stunning in its own right, offering a breathtaking sunrise view as well as a spectacular view of Koh Phangan. Another thing I noticed was the diversity of hotel guests. There were solo travelers, couples, families, and groups of friends staying at the resort. I had some unexpected work to do and thankfully there were computers in the lobby. "

"We booked for one night when transiting from Koh Tao home via Ko Samui airport. We booked this hotel as it was good value for money, upon requesting a late check out the next day as we had an evening flight the receptionist was so helpful and accommodating, they granted us the check out and upgraded us from a deluxe room to a pool view villa. The room was wonderful, spacious, black out curtains, there was no noise disturbance, huge spacious and comfortable bed! Had a lovely Thai massage in their spa! Food was really good and good value too, happy hour every day from 4-7pm. All the staff were lovely, lovely pools and lovely beach! Would definetly stay here again!"

"As a family we had 2 bungalows for 8 nights. It was beautiful wandering through the gardens to get to the beach and swimming pool. The rooms were spacious and luxurious. Mae nam was very quiet, a great selection of restaurants in the same street. Lots of taxi services available to other beaches. A great location for a quiet hassle free holiday. We really loved our stay at Pinnacle."

"I cannot recommend this place highly enough. If, like myself, you require a relaxing, affordable place to stay with great food and a bungalow that is footsteps from the beach, don't hesitate to choose Shangrilah Bungalow. It is just like the places I used to stay in Thailand and brought back happy memories and was just the tonic to de-stress and live simply. Too many places in Ko Samui, like Chaweng and Lamai, are very busy now and attract a the loud, tattooed, singlet wearing Full Moon party crowd. This is not my scene and the beauty with Mae name is that you able to enjoy all that Koh Samui has to offer and have a crazy night but return to the tranquility of Shangrilah. Thank you for a great stay. "

"What a great place to stay when visiting Koh Samui. Situated in Mae Nam, it's set back from the road in a quiet location, with its own beach. The greenery and villas dotted around give it a real resort feel. The staff are very friendly and always happy to help. The restaurant has gorgeous beach views, and it's a great place to sit on the comfy sofas in the bar next door and watch the sun go down. I would definitely recommend Fairhouse Villas."

"We were here in low season so the hotel was almost empty and we shared the nice beach with a few people from other hotels. The hotel has a restaurant on the beach. It’s good and not too expensive (compare to the cheap street food). Bungalow close to the beach is simple and clean but it is not luxury. We don’t know how it is in high season but Mae Nam is definitely more quiet than Chaweng, with probably less restaurants and bars. The atmosphere seems to be more local here. Chaweng is only touristic. There are bars but no nightclubs. Unfortunately lots of places closed in Mae Nam in low season, so we rent a motorbike (150 Bath a day – 4 euros) and it was nice. People drive ok here but I guess there’s a lot more traffic in high season. Be very careful if you are not used to drive one ! We loved it here and stayed much longer than we had planned."

"We stayed here twice either side of a week on other islands. It is right on the beach and if you like to laze around this will be perfect. The swimming is lovely, the beach is clean, the beach chairs are comfy. All good. There are also good places to eat along the beach and in the village of Mae Nam. Head for some local places (Pat's Kitchen is excellent), not just the ones recommended by the hotel. Mae Nam is a very sleepy town so if you are after nightlife you won't find it here. I enjoyed it, although my partner wished there was more to do. Rooms are a good size with a wet room bathroom. Hot water to varying degrees. Air con good plus a fan. Nothing to complain about really."

More about Mae Nam

From its location on the north shore of Koh Samui, the community of Mae Nam is one of the last backpacker strongholds on an island that’s increasingly known for its top-end accommodation. Development is slowly setting in, but rustic and affordable beach bungalows at Mae Nam Beach are still the standard.

The seven-kilometer beach follows a crescent-shaped bay, and hotels at Mae Nam are comfortably spaced to allow afford plenty of privacy. These calm waters are ideal for swimming and snorkeling, and there are two small piers that offer charter sailboats and speedboats. Boats can also be chartered to Koh Phangan, which hovers on the northern horizon.

Accommodation in Mae Nam doesn’t all fall into the budget category. Its reputation as a backpacker haven is rooted in the early days of Samui tourism, when some of the island’s first long-stay bungalows were built here. Today, the scene is more diverse and several up-market hotels have added their services to the beach. A prominent resort and spa now stands at the beach’s halfway point, with a few more luxury options to the west.

As far as shopping is concerned, Mae Nam is the place to pick up teakwood furniture, and local merchants will arrange the necessary permits and have their products delivered to customers’ home. Mae Nam is a quiet place after hours, and it’s the perfect place for a romantic sunset dinners. There aren’t any nightclubs in the area, but Mae Nam does have its share of beach bars and pubs. Live music plays in a few local venues.
