"I stayed in the Jacuzzi tub with mountain views and it was clean and nice. Although Thailand hasn't figured out the memory foam mattress toppers yet, the staff attempted to provide a mattres covering to help with the hardness if traditional beds in Thailand. The price was a bit expensive considering there is a gorgeous resort up the road for the same price, but I travel with a small dog, so options are limited. The hotel has a beautiful garden with a babbling brook running thru it. Mae Rim/ Mae Sa also has the Amazing Queen's botanical gardens with great trails and more to see....A beautiful taste of nature. There were cute decorative touches throughout the hotel. The staff were welcoming with a convenient pet policy. (Please keep Thai hotel owners happy with foreigners traveling with their pets as over the years, many hotels stop accepting pets.) The food was really good northern style thai food with a huge breakfast. Overall, this was really nice."

"We spent 2 nights at the resort. The moment we stepped inside the property, we were like "wow". The landscape is brilliantly designed. The room is spacious. The best is the Japanese style toilet. Minibar except for alcohol were free. What I don't like about the room is that a mattress (which was super comfy) was on the wooden floor. It is quite hard to get up. As well as a small low table and chair (without legs) aren't very practical especially for elderly. What really need to be improved is food. During our stay we have tried egg Benedict, congee, french toast, shabu shabu, and tempura. We were not impressed. Overall, it s a great place to stay if you do not have problem with mobility. "

"After spending an exhausting week tomb raiding in Siem Reap and trekking through Chiang Mai, my partner and I were looking for a little Rest and Relaxation. We both love nature and wanted to surround ourselves with all that Thailand's jungle has to offer. There are a few "rustic" jungle getaway options available outside Chiang Mai, but Sukantara fit our budget and seemed to be embedded into the mountain overlooking a waterfall – perfect. We took a cab from our guest house in Chiang Mai to reach this secluded hotel for 700 BHT. Sukantara is magical. We loved our cabin, with perfect views of the waterfall, lofty ceilings, and a large, clean, comfortable bed. We enjoyed a dinner of northern Thai specialties and watched the gardens glow as the sun set. We explored the extensive grounds, meeting the local pets (kittens, dog, birds) and wildlife (peacocks, crazy jungle insects), and identifying the local flora. Set Your Expectations: Many reviews of Sukantara describe it as being run down, dirty, smelling of mildew, etc. Allow me help clarify. Although those reviews are all true to some extent – the furnishings are older, some antique, you may find dirt on your balcony or water and leaves on your outdoor bathroom floor, your cabin may smell musty. I would like to remind guests that you are essentially staying in a cabin in the rain forest – the fact that you have air conditioning, wi-fi, and running water is incredible. The wi-fi was good enough for us to stream a movie in HD on my laptop. You may find a harmless bug or two in your room. Your shower and toilet are adjacent to your room, outdoors. Say hello to the geckos as you wash up and use the provided robes to luxuriate on your balcony. Put on some bug spray when you go down to dinner. This place is magical and I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates and enjoys not only the sight of, but the company of nature. "

"Six beautifully appointed rooms (villas) in the midst of beautiful countryside. Very friendly staff, Khun Tai could not have been more helpful. He collected us from the airport, took us to a nearby restaurant (as the hotel only served breakfast), served a lovely breakfast and answered all of our questions. We did not have our own transport so were very grateful for his help. We borrowed 2 bicycles and enjoyed exploring the area for 2 days, cycling though paddy fields on quiet roads. The bed was super comfy, the bathroom huge, large fridge and TV, AC and ceiling fan. The small pool was salt water and perfect for floating in while looking at the hills at sunset and recovering from bike riding. If you want a very quiet, good valued stay in the countryside then I highly recommend. "

More about Mae Rim

Northeast of Chiang Mai city center along Highway 107, Mae Rim is an increasingly popular resort destination with ample facilities and immediate access to mountain retreats near Chiang Mai. In many ways, Mae Rim is Chiang Mai’s one-stop jungle depot, with exotic animal farms, botanic gardens, rafting tours and hiking expeditions all on the agenda.

Most resorts in Mae Rim are accessible from the highway, but set back far enough on lightly wooded grounds that guests aren’t aware of the traffic. As these establishments are around 30 minutes outside of Chiang Mai city center, they offer comprehensive facilities including swimming pools, restaurants and lounges.

Just before reaching Mae Rim from Chiang Mai, drivers pass a turn-off for Mae-Sa. As gateway to the mountainous backcountry that has made Mae Rim famous, Mae Sa operates butterfly and orchid farms along with snake, elephant, monkey and tiger centers and a host of adventure sport arenas. The Mae-Sa Golf Course is also here, which attracts an even mix of locals and tourists.

Tourists who really want to explore this backcountry can hire a medium-sized motorbike or a car and explore on their own. Past Mae Rim, the road narrows and winds through beautiful mountain scenes. The rustic accommodation near Mae Rim is set in one of Chiang Mai’s most attractive settings, and staying here is often a highlight for tourists who hadn’t expected to find such quaint surroundings so close to Chiang Mai city center.
