Cannot Fault the Hotel”
Excellent wee room. Staff falling over themselves to be hospitable. Pretty good breakfast. Excellent surroundings. Very very helpful at check-in.

Noise and mosquitoes caused a problem”
Location is great, the room is new and well maintained.
Our stay was a little mixed. The room is right next to the courtyard for the cafe, and the staff start coming in and preparing for the day at around 6am. And they are noisy while they do it, using the juicing machine and talking loudly to one another. Not helpful when you are on holiday! Mosquitoes also caused us a huge lack of sleep on our second night. As the bathroom only has a window shutter and no glass, it was full of mozzies, some of which escaped into the room and we both got bitten to pieces despite covering ourselves in repellant. Make sure you take some kind of plug in insect killer because it was thoroughly unpleasant. We also didn't have any housekeeping services in our room throughout our 2 night stay, which seems very unusual for a hotel of this price. Breakfast was pretty and too. I asked for eggs benedict, which on the menu was described as poached eggs on English muffins with spinach and hollandaise sauce. In reality, it was two hard boiled eggs on three dry slices of toast. Not as advertised as all. Overall we felt the hotel was overpriced and a little disappointing.

A place to avoid at all cost ”
Very bad. A place full of mosquitoes, the garbage right in front of your door and no service as such.

Enjoyable stay”
location, comfort, view
the Maison De Raux consists of rooms housed within a shophouse selling lifestyle items/furniture. a small but pretty courtyard. loved the high ceiling of the room and it was really comfortable, but a number of mosquitoes snuck in through the adjoining bathroom, which had gaps in the window shutters. be sure to close your bathroom door at all times! if you're particular about privacy and are uncomfortable knowing that there is a table outside your window, hang a scarf/shawl over the window :) otherwise, a good location, lots of shops in the vicinity, and the Galle Fort Spa as well (try their foot massage); nice rooftop overlooking the ocean view, and it's down the street if you want to be closer to it :) do give the food a try as well!

Lovely hotel”
Room location and service
It's a good hotel. The staff was wonderful and quite helpful to us. We had a smooth check in and we were able to request a late check out. Room was comfortable as well. The price was a good rate too. Breakfast could be better though with more choices. Otherwise, everything is acceptable.

Great value for money!”
Value for money, convenient location and food.
I recently visited Maison De Raux on a business trip to Galle. The hotel was recommended to me by a friend as a good value option, which I 100% agree with. The staff were very friendly and hospitable and nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast was a highlight, although coffee was extra, which was a little strange. Room itself was basic although, clean and well furnished. Would definitely have no hesitation recommending to business travellers to Galle.

A "Raux" diamond”
Maison De Raux is like a raw diamond: it needs a lot of polish. It is among the most expensive venues in Galle. At this price, you expect a certain level of comfort, food and service: 1) Comfort The rooms are small, yet beautifully decorated. The problem is that the rooms are absolutely not soundproof and since you are sleeping in the middle of a café, the only quiet hours are between 11.30 pm (last customers leaving) and 6.30 am (staff cleaning dishes and preparing the day). 2) Food The Sri Lankan breakfasts are OK, yet very far from the best ones we had during our trip. The Western breakfasts are absolutely substandard and should be avoided: the waffles are microwaved; the eggs benedict were overcooked and the spinach mentioned on the menu is solely a decoration. 3) Service - our bed was made everyday, but the bathroom was not cleaned although we went to the beach and the shower was full of sand - morning staff was talking very loud, putting up loud music at 6.30 am while banging around dishes taken out of the dishwasher - the first day we waited 45 minutes at the breakfast table before even tea was brought to the table A special mention must be made to the manager, who has visible hotel management experience, was very concerned about our happiness and our comfort and also helped us a lot with our other bookings etc. By the end of our stay it was obvious that we were not quite happy and the manager said he would give us a complimentary dinner. 30 minutes in the dinner, the waiter came back to us saying that only the main courses would be complimentary! Apparently the greedy owner of the hotel had called to change this. We suspected the staff to have taken their revenge because of our regular complaints to the manager, making our food extra spicy and our beer was served warm. If rooms are made sound-proof and the manager replaces key employees with more experienced staff, this could become one of the best places to stay in Galle.

worst place in Galle - torture ”
location
this is the worst place you can stay in Galle. There are so many better places for lesser money. I had booked this place for older family members. The rooms are beautifully decorated but have no windows. It's like a shoe box. There are so many things that were wrong with this place - after we got there the staff demanded that we pay double of what we had paid because we had two people staying in the room and not one! This is the strangest thing I heard, because they were not providing any food. - the electricity was out all night... And no staff to turn it back on. These rooms are at the back of a furniture store. So the entire staff leaves locking the guests inside the store. There is one staff members and he was fast asleep. So we went all night without power, hot water or AC - one night, the roof leaked - the rooms were not cleaned - the wi-fi did not work - this place is super expensive -

Still a work in progress”
Location, cleanliness, nice antiques
We stayed here for two nights. I made the booking mostly because this was the only hotel I could find online that wasn't ridiculously cheap. However, after wandering around Galle we soon found that most of the cheaper hotels were just as good and in some cases even better. The hotel is an experimental project by the owner and his wife. The hotel is actually their antique and interior decoration shop, and the rooms are located in the back. There are no windows in the rooms, except for one next to the toilet which provides you with a view of the staff on lunch break. This also means the rooms can be quite noisy as the staff negotiate with customers and move objects in and out of the store right next to your room. Galle Fort is very small and crowded, and many of the other hotels we saw had similar issues. However, many of these other hotels had services, like a restaurant or drinks shop, which the Maison De Raux doesn't have. On the positive side, the rooms are quite clean and modern. However, the staff seemed more focused on running the shop, and maybe that is why they didn't make our room while we were out for the day. If the owner puts more effort into converting his very beautiful store into a fully operational hotel, it could work. But as it is, you can get a similar or even better experience in Galle Fort for less.
